I love my Kitchen Aid and have all kinds of attachments. I saw this ice cream maker attachment and wanted to try making my own ice cream. The cost was reasonable, so I ordered. Hubby and I eat a LOT of ice cream, and the cost has doubled. Making our own held a lot of appeal, even with basic ingredients being a little pricey. I had some serious doubts about a bowl that had to be frozen for 24 hours prior to use–how on earth could that make good ice cream, and if it did work, would I need two to keep a supply going? I looked at self-freezing models that were OMG out of my price range, and other types, basically salt based or frozen bowl based, and comparatively, this unit seemed the best. WOW! Let me say it again. WOW! Making ice cream is unbelievably easy and it was so good I could not believe it! The attachment goes on the machine with no effort. The bowl, frozen overnight, gets your custard poured in, turned on low, and about 15 minutes later you have unbelievably good ice cream. You can make it as simple or gourmet as your heart desires, and my first try at plain vanilla was as good as it gets! The bowl holds 2 quarts, which is not a lot for a big family, so realistically, if you were making LOTS of ice cream you might seriously consider investing in a second bowl. You also get two high quality ice cream bar molds, which is a nice bonus. But I cannot say enough good things about this. Easy, fast, delicious. Hubby and I recommend it without hesitation and with bells on! It would also make a fabulous gift for any occasion! YUM! WOW! Double-Wow!

First i will say I was a little confused upon getting this how to make it work, the paddle mixer does not attach to anything. It just turns based on the attachement that slides onto the mixer and the pressure and grove allow this to turn. We have a chest freezer and came out making a lot of ice cream. To the point we had to stop as we didn’t have room to fit any more. We made multiple batches from milk+cream based to egg based. This handle all of them. What I found was the 20-30 min window usually got a solid increase and a nice soft serve consistency. The more egg the recipe had the smoother and easier it was to scoop out of the freezer. The milk+cream only ones, no egg froze to a very hard base and took some muscle to get ice cream scooped. This worked great the popcicle worked well and like the extra molds for them. The 2 things I would say could use improvement is better insulation as the condensation on the outside is heavy as well as it only does 1 batch at a time. I tried 2 and the 2nd never solidified. The other thing that was a bit tricky was clean up, you either had to wait until it was defrosted to clean well, or just wipe clean and start a 2nd. However some of the flavors like our cinnamon maple was a bit to strong of flavors to have an residual left behind. I am not sure there is much you could do to make it easier to clean while still cold, but otherwise this makes a great smooth ice cream. Keeping the setting low and slow is key for us to not get crystalizing or clumping.
