Personal opinion: These are the best strings in terms of quality, price, and sound. You don’t need anything more. Don’t be swayed by the extra features that marketing often tries to sell you, which don’t actually provide a substantial improvement. I’m saying this with over 25 years of experience.

I’ve mainly used Dean Markley Cryogenic Blue Steels and Ernie Ball Super Slinkys, but a Dean Edge 3 Bass I purchased came with these strings and they sounded great. So I’ve left them on and as time has gone by I purchased more to try on my ESP/LTD and Schecter basses. Now that Blue Steels seem hard to come by these are becoming my main strings, except on Stingrays which I still use Super Slinkys.

This brand is so much better than what came with the guitar. No more breakage. Fair price. Produces sounds wanted.

I have a Jazz bass, Spector, and 2 different Stingrays with different neck widths. I use these on all of them and they sound incredible, feel incredible, and last well. I’ve tried numerous brands/gauges of roundwounds over the years but the EXL170 are the ones I always come back to.

I bought a 5 string bass to add chords above the 12th fret to a traditional bottom. The bass came with a set of strings low B- high C. I used this set of strings, put aside low B, and had it string low E (105 gauge) to high B (32 gauge). A440 store, Great Bend KS put the strings on, dressed the frets, and voice instrument. Playing into the store Gallen Krueger bass amp the typical bass notes had great bottom. Everything else including the chords above the 12th fret had rich but clear voice. A440 had never done this before, but I think did a great job. The bench tech called it a “high 5” set. I like that better than calling it a bass “tenor” tuning.
I can hardly wait to put it into my full range powered speakers.

I love the strings but I ordered short scale but received long scale, I used them anyway. Order came a day early! Gave it a 4 star because of wrong length.

Good strings but extremely bad packaging.
I wish the would use better packing, that would keep the original packaging intact

I ordered a “damaged package” 5 string set for my electric bass BUT I was shipped a package that had a preinstalled Low B string. It was coiled on the end and i guess they don’t know you cant reinstall strings twice or they snap. no two basses are alike.
That being said the bottom 4 strings were new and the price i got was great so i kept them anyways and installed the bottom 4 strings on my acoustic bass. I usually use bronze strings but WOW these really brought it to life. 50-105 on an acoustic bass sounds great. nice projection, crisp punch yet nice lows. The acoustic bass even has a nice slap. I’m definitely happy with the results and I’m glad i kept them.
You cant beat D’Addario, they rarely ever break. Besides bass, I use them on my electric guitars, classical guitars and acoustics as well. I play many many styles as a studio musician and they have never let me down.

so I tried several strings for my Short Scale Gretsch g2220. First was Ernie Ball regular slinky short scale. Which I really like it but for some reason I was missing some brightness which lacks on short scale basses. Then I tried buying Ernie Ball cobalt regular scale but they didn’t fit on my tuners, it was too thick. Next one was the rotobass swing stell strings that my bass heroes all use, but I thought it was a little rough on my fingers and still not the sound I wanted.
So back in Brazil when I started playing bass the most affordable strings were D’Addario and I was apprehensive to try it because Ernie balls were super expensive I thought they were the best. So I bought D’Addario nickel wound .50, the same one the that apparently Mike Kerr from Royal Blood uses.
I restring my g2220 with these and adjusted the bridge and pickups for my tone taste and wow! This sounds amazing!!! It’s so bright and punchy, sounds really good either you play with fingers or picks.
The ONLY downside is that .50 are a little more difficult to play, I even ordered .45s to replaced this. I was actually considering replacing the G and D for the .45 and .64 set so it gets a better playability but cancelled and decided to keep this as my true set. I always played with higher tension strings and I’m not that virtuous or play many solos. These are perfect if you play rock, metal or funk.
I will update this review with photos and after I feel that I need to replace the set.
100% recommended. Hands down for D’Addario for keeping improving the quality of their strings.
