I have been using DR strings for over twenty years and won’t even consider using a different brand. I really have no idea what compression winding is, but I do know it makes the best guitar strings money can buy. Theres very minimal stretching when new and they stay sounding great for month’s. If you play guitar and have never tried DR strings, get a set and I’ll bet you never use anything else.

I have played DRs for the past 20+ years. They are fantastic strings. They have incredible tone, and last forever. I used to break strings constantly until I switched to these. But lately they have switched to 2 strings per envelope, and it’s a miserable experience.

If you want to just change a single string, good luck. The other one is likely to come flying out of the package when you remove the one you need. I understand they’re trying to be environmentally friendly, but it really sucks when you’re at a gig trying to quickly change a string. I don’t want to have to be chasing down the second string that unrolled and is now lying somewhere on a dark stage. Even changing all strings at once is irritating because they package them as “3rd & 6th string”, “2nd & 5th String”, “and 1st and 4th String” so you have to be very careful about keeping track of which came from which envelope.

These strings rock and have a lot of sustain. What threw me off at first though was that the bass almost disappears compared to the Ernie Ball strings I used before these. Had to turn the bass up on the amp to compensate. But I really love these, probably the best strings I’ve ever used in 27 years of playing.

Contrary to another review, the top E strings DO NOT BREAK EASILY! He probably has a bur on his bridge saddle. I have these strings on 5 different guitars, and have NEVER broken a string on them (and I bend a lot). Secret: graphite saddles, graphite or properly filed bone nut.

I used GHS Boomers since the 80’s. I tried other strings once in awhile, including crazy-expensive ‘hand wound’ boutique strings, and always went back to Boomers.

2 years ago, I tried these on a lark, when the store I was at had run out of Boomer 10’s. Put them on and, wow: better sound, for sure; clear without being sterile or strident; warm without loss of definition. The 2nd thing I noticed, and I have no explanation for this, is that bends seemed easier, as if the string tension were lighter. Dunno why.

And, after weeks and weeks of playing I noticed their durability; they still kept that tone, didn’t show wear.

They are on all my guitars now, except my Martin acoustics, because I only use silk and steel strings on them.

P.S. I also tried their blues nickel-wound strings, but I did find those overly bright and strident-sounding.

These have been my go-to string for about 15 years. I use the 10-46 for standard and half step down, and 11-56 Alexi set (or 11-50s if I can’t get them) for anything lower than that. There are they ONLY string that don’t die almost immediately due to my skin chemistry.

Within the last year I have tried plenty of brands to see if I was missing out on anything. And I have tried literally almost all of the greats:
D’addario (my long time backup string): Handle a lot of abuse and sound decent enough. The 2nd best string when it comes to suriving my acid sweat
D’addario NYXL: I had all of these on all of my guitars recently, except my 7 string. Better than the XL series for tuning stability but the tension is a little odd.
Ernie Ball: Garbage. They tarnish within 15 minutes of me playing them, and I can’t get more than a month of life out of them with my care routine.
Rotosound: I record with these now. They sound amazing, but like EB, they don’t last very long under my fingers.
Dean Markley: Sound pretty good, but not as good as Rotos, and last as long as EB for me.
GHS Boomers: I use these on my 7 string. They don’t tarnish too quickly and sound average. However, they come in the gauge I want for 7 string.
Elixers: They do last a while, but I HATE the tone. They sound overly bright and brittle with some non-musical overtones (to my ears). HATE them.

After everything, I came back to DRs. They sound warm and fat, with just enough sparkle. Their tuning stability is great, and as long as you know how to wind them, they intonate great. I just really love round-core strings. The one, the flexibility, everything about this string is good if you want a vintage sound with a little added brightness. (The DR Pure Blues are amazing for super warm and fat sound, and I had used these in the past).

Do yourself a favor, and try these strings!

I have a collection of 20 guitars and use these on all of them. After playing I wipe the strings down with Dr ducks string lube and these strings will maintain their tone and luster for more than a year if cared for. I’ve never had any issues with the ball ends flying off like I have with D’addario. I recently tried the D’addario XL and they were so harsh and twangy that I switched the strings back to DR within a day. The DR have a tight and powerful low end and the high end is clear but not harsh.

The only drawback I’ve noticed is that due to the hand wound nature there have been some cases where a string pack did not come with all the necessary strings!

Highly recommend from a tone, durability, and feel perspective.
