I love this unit! I was able to do a minimal customization to allow this unit to hang on the side of my 55 gallon tank! It’s small yet large enough to keep the tank clean. Perfect for filter modifications! It’s 3-4 times larger than the quiet flow 10! It’s much, MUCH quieter than the whisper EX! Enough room to add any media you’d desire to the holding/processing tank. Has a flow adjustment which would be great for more delicate fish. With a hand grinder I was able to remove 2 tabs, one from each side of the unit where the opening for the water to flow is, it wasn’t quite small enough to fit the 55 gallon side, so I took a hand grinder and cut off each tab shown in my photos, it fits perfectly into the space now and works great for the area I needed it to fit into! Happiness!

Keeps my 50 gallon aquarium clean and healthy with 4 goldfish. I also use this exact one in my axolotl tank works well easy to clean and rinse out in the axolotl tank where I have to clean the tank weekly or bi-weekly.

I have over 35 years in this hobby and a fishroom with 34 tanks. I say that because I’ve tried most everything in this hobby over the years and am super impressed with this unit. It is virtually silent, as the waterfall bio system eliminates any splash from the overflow. It is not as versatile as the Seachem Tidal, as it uses cartridges instead of Seachems basket design, but dollar for dollar the Cascade is a great unit at about 30% less cost than Seachem. The Cascade is well made, has a large syrface are on the filter cartridge, and uses the dual cartridge approach of Marineland, but with a better quality cartridge. I also like that i will be able to save the mechanical filter cartridge frame to use my own filter floss DIY. When running a lot of tasks, that is a huge money saver. I will definitely buy this unit again for future set ups. I would use it solo up to 75 gallons, maybe even 125 gallons if live plants and stocked with smaller tetras, etc..

This filter didnt last long at all. It died faster than my cheap filter. It has poor suction and makes a horrible noise. Ive cleaned it, looked at it, tried to get the suction going. Im not sure what the issue is. Its broken and will not filter without making a loud puttering noise. It looks like there may be bubbles coming from somewhere they shouldnt? I cannot fix it.

Im a bit agitated that I have to buy another filter. The simplistic design made me think it would last awhile.

After reading the instructions, installing everything as instructed, I filled it with water and put the plug in and nothing happened. I emptied the water and took the filter off the tank. I was very disappointed it didn’t work right out of the box. It appeared the impeller and shaft wasn’t seated properly and there’s a lot of play in it even when it is seated properly. So I fiddled with the impeller and shaft, got it to seat properly, tested it in the sink, and then put it back on the tank, filled it with water, and it worked. So, hopefully people will read this review prior to installing the pump and make sure the impeller and shaft are properly seated and working prior to filling it with water and putting it on the tank. Otherwise they will be unhappy like I was having to empty the water and fiddling around with it to get it to work after it was already installed. It seems to work well and has good flow and is very quiet.

Update: Filter has been performing well and I cleaned it for the first time. It is much easier to clean than my Aquaclear 110’s. It isn’t quite as powerful, but much easier to handle and keeps my 38 gallon tank very clear. I don’t think I would use it on my big tank though because it doesn’t have quite the power and flow that the 110’s have. Good alternative if you want to save yourself time and trouble cleaning the Aquaclears.

The Penn-Plax Cascade 300 GPH Power Filter is very noisy to the point of disturbing , the sound overtakes the room , would not suggest this filter if to be used in a TV room , there’s a front attachment that changes the waterflow . when you take that off its a tiny bit less noisy and when you take the filter cover off its less noisy but then the filter just doesn’t look right , disappointing because it’s powerful and works really well.

The media could not be loaded.

    Great idea and great price.

Cheap plastics and a bit big for the flow produced is low. It’s also not whisper quiet but it’s not loud. 1 year warranty leaves something to be desired.

Will try a replacement and hopefully it will be better.

Was hoping to have found a lower priced alternative to the big names in HOBs like Seachem Tidal, Fluval Aquaclear and Marineland Penguin.

100 gallon rating is laughable. At best it would be sufficient for a 50-60 gallon tank.

Great seller. I received two that were broken in the box. Not the sellers fault at all. Must be rough handling and shipping. Seller made it right and the filter works perfectly. I would definitely buy again from this seller.

I really love the self priming and it’s not super quiet, but also not loud either. The 300 is definitely louder than the 200. The only issue I had was the first one came cracked. I’m finding that Amazon isn’t great with their products lately though either. I’ve had several returns due to product issues so don’t be alarmed if you get a broken one first time round.

I decided to switch to this filter for my 62-gallon fancy goldfish tank after running a Marineland Penguin for quite some time… it was the best decision I could’ve made.

The biggest pro to using this filter is the silence. It’s the quietest hang-on-back filter that I’ve ever come across. 4 months in and there’s little to no mechanical noise coming from the motor, my mother often puts her ear up to the filter because she can’t believe it’s even on. There’s also very little noise created by the water return (which I absolutely love). If you’re someone who likes to hear the sound of running water this filter will not be it for you, you can hardly hear a trickle.

The filter is also incredibly efficient with a fantastic (and completely adjustable) flow rate. They really don’t lie on the box when they say this thing turns over 300 gallons of water per hour. Be prepared to have your water looking clear as day, especially when used with the right filter media.

My only concern with this filter is that the materials do feel a little bit fragile, so I’m curious to see how it holds up long term.

All in all though, it’s fantastic value for the cost; it’s just as good as any other mainstream brand filter out there.

Added this as an extra filter to my 75 gallon. Haven’t had any issues, it was super easy to put together and is whisper quiet. Has made a good difference in water clarity. Great value amazing price
