I can only guess that this miniscule attempt at an instrument is geared toward tiny gift shops that offer little trinkets for unruly kids who whine until their weary parents succumb to pressure and placate them with anything that will bring a few minutes peace.
That would be a semi-successful manoeuver as I really don’t think a child would be able to get any more sound out of this thing than I have, despite multiple YouTube tutorials. I can imagine the child plucking away at it, possibly figuring out to put it in their mouth despite the lack of any instructions whatsoever, then irritating their lips or teeth and again beginning the relentless wails of displeasure, only this time armed with string, a hunk of almost artfully burned wood, and a metal projectile.
But as an adult, procuring this from the Internet, I am left with a non-functional small scale model of a traditional instrument, 18 inches of jute cord, and an almost 3 inch by 1 inch chunk of wood with 2 holes in it, lightly burned, though without even the pleasant scent of burned wood. And a generic burned image of a… dolphin? I still can’t make any connection between these things. Unless the aforementioned gift shop is in Florida. That would explain a great deal.
I’m not sure what to even do with this thing. Worst White Elephant gift ever? Very strange conversation starter? Maybe place it in an ornate box and bury it, or leave it deep inside a cave, and at least find joy in imagining the perplexed expressions of the archeologists who might one day find it and place it in a museum of unexplainable things.
Well, at least I found a use for it, and I know what I’m doing tomorrow.

My brother is a musician, and I have a tradition of gifting him with various esoteric or interesting instruments. As another reviewer on here mentioned, we both became aware of the jaw harp through Snoopy, and it’s been a go-to impression to make us laugh ever since, even over 40 years later. So I jumped at the chance to get him one. This instrument is handmade and quite small. It comes with a wooden block with a hole for you to put the tongue of the harp into, so it doesn’t bend or break off. Then you wrap the block with the bit of rope that also is threaded through the block, in order to secure the instrument. It’s a clever storage method.
It didn’t take my brother long to start getting some pleasing and resonant sounds out of the harp, though we did watch a YouTube tutorial to learn proper technique, and how to hold it. Some instructions would have been nice, especially if this was something you had never seen before. The springy boing sound the instrument makes is fun and rhythmic and changes with your oral posture, the shape of your lips, and tongue positioning, so it’s way more versatile than you might believe. It does cause vibrations throughout your mouth and teeth, which is uncomfortable at first, but just takes some getting used to.
Overall, this instrument was well-made and produces a very unique sound, so it’s fun and appropriate for a musician, a hobbyist, or maybe even a child, if they’re patient and inclined toward a little bit of dexterity. And, if you can’t get the best sound out of it, don’t worry, you can also dance around like Snoopy and just go wild!

The media could not be loaded.

I really like musical instruments and I own multiple jaw harps….this is about half the size of any harp I have ever owned. If you watch the attached video, you can easily see how tiny it is compared to my hand/mouth. This is a major annoyance when trying to play the harp, because it is so tiny that you have to hold it in irregular ways and your hand can easily slip will plucking.

Also, with the size being like it is, it is very hard to get any real volume out of it. Again, I play these harps on a regular basis and have never had issues with getting a good volume when pushing out air, but this is just so much quieter 🙁

Also, it says it comes with a carrying case….I do not agree with that statement. It’s a block of wood with a screen sticking out of it and a string attached to wrap around the harp. This is not an effective carrying case at all and it makes the entire piece feel more like a cheap toy.

If you are okay with this, or you are wanting to get this for a child who might benefit from the overall smaller size, this may be for you. If you are looking for a harp that creates a decent sound and easy to play with adult hands, this may be a bad choice.

    Some observations about this item:
First, Amazon should be ashamed of itself allowing this type of item to be sold under an anti-Semitic name.
Second, this made in Russia Jaw Harp is tiny! I’ve attached some pictures. One is of this item next to a normal sized Jaw Harp. This one is about 2.5 inches!
Third, the “case” it comes with is not at all a case. It is a block of wood with a hole drilled in it, and a piece of string through another hole.
All that being said, it does make a tiny sound. If for some reason you want a miniature Jaw Harp for the price of a real one, go ahead.

This instrument has a long history and when you hear it, you will recognize its sounds from things like folk music and square dances and jug bands. Watching some videos online can help you figure out how to play it. If you have nightmares about things touching your teeth, this is not the instrument for you. There is a learning curve during which you probably will smack yourself in the teeth with it. Some people can figure it out faster than others— I am in the slow group for sure. It looks easy, but actually is quite challenging until you get the hang of it! Nonetheless, it is a folk instrument with a long history and some people get quite proficient very quickly. Maybe you will be one of those! If you want to learn a folk instrument and you don’t like harmonica, maybe this is the one for you.
