Tamron 50-400mm Lens for Sony Mirrorless Description

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras is an exceptional piece of equipment designed to meet the demands of both amateur and professional photographers. With a remarkable 8x zoom ratio, this lens covers an expansive focal length range from 50mm to 400mm, making it versatile for a wide variety of shooting scenarios.

Expansive 8x Zoom Ratio

This lens offers an impressive 8x zoom ratio, extending from a standard 50mm to a powerful 400mm. The 50mm focal length is ideal for everyday photography, while the 400mm focal length excels in capturing distant subjects, making it perfect for wildlife, sports, and landscape photography.

Unfaltering High Image Quality

The Tamron 50-400mm lens is engineered with 24 elements in 18 groups, incorporating advanced optical technologies. It includes two XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), three LD (Low Dispersion), one GM (Glass Molded Aspherical), and one Hybrid Aspherical lens element. These elements work together to control various types of aberrations, including axial chromatic aberrations, ensuring high image quality across the entire zoom range. Additionally, the Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2 coating minimizes ghosting and flare, producing sharp and clear images.

High-Speed and High-Precision Autofocus

Equipped with VXD linear motor focus mechanism, the lens delivers high-speed and high-precision autofocus (AF). This feature is crucial for capturing fast-moving subjects, such as birds in flight, with exceptional clarity. The VXD system is also extremely quiet, making it perfect for video recording and other projects that require silent operation.

VC Image Stabilization

Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization technology is integrated into this lens, providing stability and reducing image blur caused by camera shake. This feature is particularly beneficial when shooting at longer focal lengths or in low-light conditions.

Compact and Lightweight Design

Despite its extensive zoom range, the Tamron 50-400mm lens is notably compact and lightweight. Its dimensions are 7.2 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches, and it weighs a mere 0.16 ounces. This makes it as compact as a conventional 100-400mm lens, allowing for easy portability and comfortable shooting experiences.

When I purchased this lens it was mainly for animal photography but have used it for just about anything as it’s that versatile.

Don’t leave your camera only Auto mode. I went out 3 times and took over 600 pictures. First day I was so disappointed. Most pictures were not so sharp as I expected. Slow moving ducks and other birds, Airplanes in the air were useless over 90 percent. I was so surprised. I got several Tamron lenses and all of them makes very sharp and clear pictures. My first thought was return this lens because it is the most expensive Tamron that I ever purchased. I didn’t want to pay $1.300 for blurry lens. But I didn’t give up. I updated lens software. Second day I changed lens setting. Use VC 2 mode. The result was better but I can not satisfied over all. Today I went out again for final test. This time I changed camera setting also(still VC 2 mode for lens). Use manual mode with auto ISO. Shutter speed was minimum 1/500 sec and Aperture was between 8 to 16. The result was very positive. Most pictures are sharp and clear. Now I decided keep this lens. However it is little bit annoying compare with other Tamron lenses. When I use other Tamrons, I can just leave my camera auto mode and result was excellent mostly. And forget about macro mode. It is not so sharp no matter what. I leave some sample pictures here. But the pictures are so small to see the details. Believe me the original size pictures are extremely sharp. My camera is Sony A7R M3. Sorry about my broken English. But I had to leave my review for help potential buyers and other users.

Update: The last two pictures(Herons) are from A7 R5. I upgraded my camera.

This was my first “big” lens purchase, in all aspects including: cost, size, and focal length!

Cost: I purchased this lens when it was right around $1200. When looking at this lens I was also considering a Tamron 70-300mm, Sony 70-200mm, and Tamron 150-500mm. Ultimately, the Sony was out of budget and didn’t give me the “wow factor” at its price. At a $800 price difference at the time, Tamron won the battle.

Focal length: What made me choose this one was that additional 20mm difference from the Tamron 70-300mm (150-500mm was too far of a length for my needs). I didn’t want to always have to switch from this lens to my 24-70mm, when I mostly shoot around 50mm. Yes, sometimes this seems a little too close, but for landscape, it’s perfect (see photos).

Size: A bit clunky at times, but is on the lighter size when considering how large it is. I’ve used the 60-600mm from Sigma, and man is that thing H E A V Y. This is the perfect weight (all things considered) for hiking it around and taking photos without feeling like you’re training for a marathon.

Quality: From the structural stand point, this lens if very sturdy. Adjustment rings are smooth (for photography, not so much from a videography stand point) and structurally feels great. From an image perspective, I was surprised at the quality of the images and how quick it was to focus (at certain lengths). When I was near the 400mm length, I found it 60/40, 60 being in focus, but that issue came up during high movement when trying to follow a subject (car photo). Otherwise, the lens is quick to focus and produces great images. For reference, all my photos are taken on an a6400.

Conclusion: If you’re considering getting a variable zoom lens, this should definitely be on your consideration list, especially at its price point. No complaints here from purchasing it almost 6 months ago.

Absolutely in love with this lens, it’s so much lighter than my Mark ii, 100-400 Canon lens. I’m super happy how sharp my images look and again, just how much lighter it is to use. Only caveat would be the digital manual focus, this takes practice and it doesn’t have the same manual friction feeling you would with manual focus lenses. But otherwise, super sharp, fast focus, quiet and light!

very sharp at the long end where I need it. quick autofocus. works very well with my sony a7rv, which needs a lens capable of high resolution. likely a good travel lens, though a little large for carrying around. I plan to add the tripod ring, which it does not come with.

I’m moving from A-mount to E-mount. I had the superb Sony 70-400mm SSM G2 Lens. It was great for stills but not for video on an E-mount camera. This Tamron is just as good and a lens I can use on trips where I’m shooting wildlife and landscapes. Think Yellowstone. Sharp from 50mm to 400mm. It’s a biggish lens but still manageable. Construction is solid and zoom and focus move smoothly. Great lens.

On April 8th, I successfully used this lens to take eclipse shots. I wish it wasn’t so cloudy that day in Prescott. Many people admired the lens, they couldn’t believe how compact it is for what it offers.

This is the first 3rd party lens I have tried in the e/fe universe. Very glad I gave it a chance. Good compression at higher zoom, unbelievable near-macro capability, and very nice bokeh from one end to the other if I do my part in constructing the shot.
Not many lenses can give me frame-filling closeups of a single, tiny flower and also reach one end to the other of a football pitch. My copy is dead sharp.
Was a bit slow in focus tracking out-of-the-box, but a firmware update improved that greatly with little fuss.
The only way I could complain about this one is that it’s a bit slow for low-light, but I knew that going in. The smaller size, weight and price tag are well worth that trade off, and the odd 50-400 range is really dang convenient while walking around or traveling

Edit on 3/1/23: In response to another review, I’d like to add that the Tamron lens I purchased has excellent image quality in all shooting modes right out of the box. Also, it included the latest firmware as well. No changes were necessary. You can shoot in any mode with confidence.

The 50-400mm range of this lens is unprecedented, so far as I know. For many purposes I now have to carry only this single lens which makes me very happy. Also, this is an excellent choice if you have a high megapixel camera. Very sharp at all focal lengths at 61 megapixels. Build is very good, focus is quick, and the built-in stabilization is excellent. It has a 3 position customizable switch, takes a 67mm filter, and isn’t too long or too heavy. This is a wonderful lens for the money. I’d buy it again in a heart-beat.
