…it made an alarming noise for roughly the first 30 minutes of use. After that it settled into the usual gentle whir you expect from a slim ODD. I am glad I did not immediately return it like I was inclined to do for that initial period as it has been operating flawlessly for some weeks since.
If you get the weird sound initially, be sure to give it a chance to calibrate itself, that may just be something it needs to do (?)

arrived ahead of time and was easy to install. Use it on my desktop computer

I set my search parameters for this product as follows: “DVD drive for an IBM T-42 Thinkpad”.
The website’s product navigation software gave this LG product that I purchased as an option for my search. The LG drive is the right size for my machine but my circa 2003 laptop has a different electronic connector used to supply the power and data links between the drive and computer. I am no expert on microcomputers but fortunately have a relative who builds computers as a hobby. He informed me that my machine uses “IDE” connectors to interface between some of it’s components – including the optical drive. This LG drive uses a “SATA” connector. Even if I had had that information – before ordering the wrong device – it wouldn’t have helped me on this purchase as there is no mention as to the LG drive’s connectivity in the product information.
The two images I have provided show 1) My laptop’s optical drive bay with the electronic connector on the left hand side. 2) A “side-by-side” view of my computer’s old DVD drive connector (top) and the LG drive’s connector (bottom).
I leave the comparison as an exercise for other potential buyers but the LG drive is absolutely incompatible with a computer that uses IDE connectors.
My beef is primarily with the Amazon navigation software – and also with the product’s description. For all I know this is a perfectly good product for a machine with the capacity to connect with it.
The Amazon return process will be fairly painless as arrangements for same only took a few minutes and a participating Kohl’s Department Store is only about five miles from where I live.
The one star rating (zero stars not being available) is for causing a not insignificant waste of my time.

Exact replacement for this model Dell Optiplex. Model number of the original drive is GU9ON, but the replacement is GUDON, which seems to be just an inadvertant misspelling by the Korean mfg LG and its Chinese factory. Regardless, the GUDON is the GU9ON. Same drive. Easy to install but refer to Dell’s PDF manual for the Optiplex 3000.

The new desktop didn’t have a DVD/CDC player built in – so I installed this – worked perfectly.
Ps – remember if you are trying to play a video from disc – you need some type of video player program on your computer…I used Windows DVD player – from their app store.
Data doesn’t need an app to drag to your computer HDD or SDD.

Ps … The drive does not come with a power or data cable. In my case, the computer already had those hanging unused by the CD/DVD slot. Also, you need two M2x2 metric screws to secure the housing to the computer slot for the CD/DVD.

I needed an ultra-slim ODD for a module that I got that allows a 9.5mm ODD and a 3.5″ HDD to be put into a standard 5.25″ drive bay. This drive fit great, included the slimline-SATA power adapter, and works well. It’s slightly louder than the old full case drive but that is to be expected and honestly it’s not as loud as I thought it would be.

This DVD player does not accept either IDE or standard PC SATA data AND power cables. If you are using this in a PC and not a direct laptop replacement, like I am, you will need a adaptor like StarTech.com 6in Slimline SATA to SATA Adapter with PowerLooks (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009JXKQ9O?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details). Bought a 5.25″ bay with a slim ODD slot. Filled it up with this bad boy. Running strong ever since, no issues. I haven’t written any CDs or DVDs, so cant speak for that. Nice to have the option for how affordable this was.
