I’ve been looking at this drive for awhile, but hesitated because I was afraid it would have issues “talking” to my Mac. I plugged it in and it was immediately right there on my desktop. I clicked on the icon and it led me through a couple of seconds of prep, them immediately connected, I had to erase the disk to prepare it for Time Machine, but it led me through that and went so fast as in seconds. I’ve never had an external device that was so easy to get up and running. I highly recommend this drive. My Mac is a 2018 Macbook Air.

This is the second Lacie hard drive I’ve ordered. Love the look, portability, storage capacity, reliability, performance and speed. Other family members use them too. ZERO complaints.

I bought the LaCie SSD Pro to keep my 2017 iMac going its seven years old. The LaCie SSD comes with a thunderbolt 3 cable. It’s really short, so I bought a longer one for $20 on Amazon with my order perfect. I formatted and rebooted the computer and installed Mac OS. It feels like I got a new computer, snappy and fast. Does get a bit warm but that’s to be expected for an external SSD.

This review is for the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro 1TB Solid State Drive — USB-C Thunderbolt 3. I’m using it as an external SSD for a Mac Mini w/ Thunderbolt 3. It comes formatted in exFAT which works on both Mac and PCs but it will be dedicated to a Mac Mini so it’s best formatted as APFS for best speed. It took about 1sec to do that. It copied a movie file of 70 GB from the internal SSD in less than 10 sec. To do an encrypted Time Machine backup of the entire 256 GB SSD internal storage it took less than 15 mins. It’s blazing fast and I’m impressed. Small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and super light. Unless I have a problem and need to come back to update this review it stands as it is.

It’s a fast and durable, good looking little drive. Great price for what you get. The cable is laughably short. I know usb c drives throttle speeds with usb a to usb c cables, so I used an Amazon cable advertised to be like 10gb/s and my speeds with this were 30mb/s or slower. So slow photoshop froze and I lost two fully designed files when I force shut down my system… I used a usb a to usb c cable that came with my old Samsung external ssd and it was faster… like 300mb/s. I’ve yet to find a cable fast enough to hit anywhere close to the advertised speeds for this drive, but honestly I’m content with the 300mb/s. Just know you may have similar issues so pay attention to transfer speeds with whatever cable you’re using.

Been traveling with it for well over a year. So far no glitches. No need of tech support. Throw it in a bag and travel. Significantly smaller than a standard sized hard drive, though not the smallest I’ve seen. It has a rubbery case on it that protects it but adds a little bulk, though very lightweight.
