Let me start by saying I ordered one and out of the box initial setup it was loud making a grinding noise. I immediately knew something was faulty. I started a replacement request and got a new perfect filter very quick. And this new one is QUIET.
The only part I can hear making noise is the water hitting the surface which is already pretty quiet. You can lower this sound even more by raising your water level or adding filter floss at the exit of the filter.
This filter is a top 3 pick. Aqueon makes good quality products. You won’t be disappointed.

Pretty good filter

This is the fist Aqueon filter I’ve used. I purchased the 45 gallon rated model for a 20 gallon, lightly stocked tank. It is quiet and moves water well except when the filter pad is clogged which happens every 4 days!
Are users expected to put in new filters every 4 days? I might return it. Also, does not self prime.

I love this brand of filters, they are perfect in every way, they filter amazingly and are really quiet, I’ve tried others that can adjust flow and stuff and they suck compared to this one, got it for a 29 gallon tank and it is great especially with gold fish cause they produce a lot of waste so it keeps up nicely

I have 2 of these filters and both work great. One was a little underpowered for my 40 gallon so I supplemented it with a second one. Both work flawlessly and are quiet after the first 15 mins of it running

This filter is advertised as being very quiet. This one is not. The impeller is making a lot of noise and vibrations. I can hear it running from across the room. This is the first filter of this brand I have used. I like how easy it is to change the filter cartridge and with the pump in the tank it starts pumping the water into the filter right away. You do not have to prime it or fill it with water for it to start. I haven’t used it long enough to review how well it keeps the tank clean. Right now the main problem is the noise.

Easily one of the best and quite HOB’s on the market, especially for price point!!!

It was quiet upon setup then I decided the flow was too strong for my long finned fish, she was struggling. So I moved it to another tank for my fish that love the stronger flow. It was then very noisy. I checked the impeller and don’t see anything wrong. I was careful with it when I moved it. No idea what I’m doing wrong or what I did. It seems finicky to suddenly get so noisy when I was very careful with it. I used it for a day then got another tetra whisper filter to use instead.

I replaced a 9 year old unit of the same device (minus the new LED filter replacement indicator feature) because the old one was getting loud which I recalled was a sign of approaching failure. Plus I didn’t care for the noise. Installing this one was simple – I even just moved the current biofilter and bracket from the old one to preserve the good bacteria. Its width is exactly the same as the old unit so it dropped right in to the same spot. However, when I turned it on, I feared I had made a terrible mistake – or that I had received a defective one. It made a terrible grinding noise. I actually went and took the old filter motor apart to clean it since I expected I’d be putting it back on the tank and filing a return request. By the time I was done with that clean up, the new filter’s noise level had dropped considerably. By the next morning, it was almost whisper quiet as promised. So my advice is: don’t judge the noise level by what you hear right away when you turn it on. Give it a few hours to settle in. Also, the LED filter replacement indicator feature is completely removable if you find you don’t care for it. The filter operates whether the LED module is plugged in or not. It appears to work by detecting when water starts to overflow around the filter bracket due to too much resistance from the filter contents. The water touches two contacts and closes the circuit that lights the LED. Seems simple but effective.

One of the most affordable and silent hang on back filters you can find on the market. However, the biggest drawback, and killer, to this filter is that there is no way of placing two cartridges in at once. Once your filter cartridge has been used for too long, even after multiple washes, it begins to clog up and decrease in function. A good idea would be to place in two filter cartridges so that you’re not getting rid of all that beneficial bacteria all at once, but the filter just doesn’t have the adequate space to fit two at once. Another option is to run two of these filters in your tank, but it is a more costly option. You can also replace the filter intake tube with a piece of sponge. That way, it adds another level of biological filtration along with preserving your filter cartridge for a while longer. Another personal tip I use is removing the carbon inside the cartridge before using it. In the long run, the carbon inside the cartridge will wear off and only cause more clogging in the future. It may also cause spikes in ammonia levels if left alone for too long, so I cut into the cartridge and shake out the carbon into a bag. Great value and function if you can modify your filter a little bit.

I’ve purchased two of these filters and I have not had good luck with either of them. I’m about to throw away the second one. Stops working and just makes loud noise

I used to have an biowheel pump/filter which I had for nearly 8 years before it finally failed. When I went to replace it, this was the only one available at the time so I bought it. It worked great for a whopping 4 months and then died. I had just bought a big bulk order of filters so I replaced it with another one of these (no use wasting money considering the cost of the filters). Pump number 2 lasted 6 months and DEAD. Of course 2 weeks after buying another bulk order of filters. So here I am buying ANOTHER pump that I’ll be lucky to get 6 months out of. Lousy good for nothing pumps.
