Brake fluid is hygroscopic, it absorbs moisture from the air. That is bad, the moisture can lead to corrosion of expensive braking components and potentially brake failure…not a good thing.

This device simply measures the moisture content of your brake fluid. Just dip the sensors in your fluid and wait for the results. Green- 0-2%, you’re good. Yellow-2-3%, start buying brake fluid. Red-3+% change it.

If your car is under warranty, absolutely follow the manufacturer’s specifications as to flushing your brake fluid. If this tester indicates you should change your brake fluid before then, by all means do it. After your warranty has expired, however, only change your brake fluid when you need to, not when the mechanic doing a “safety check” of your vehicle says.

I tested it on an old brake fluid oil. It quickly gave me a reading. I like the flexible probe. Ideally I should compare it with a different tester to make sure the ready is truly accurate.

Works well. It has a flexible head to reach into awkward reservoirs. Everyone drives differently and vehicles are exposed to different types of climates, so it makes more sense to actually test the fluid vs going by a generic mileage change. Seems to have accurate readings. I’ve tested it on several vehicles with different results that appear to be accurate.
It functions as advertised and can save you some money vs unnecessarily changing fluid that doesn’t need to be changed.

It seems to work, will have to compare between old and new fluid to see how accurate it is.

Routine maintenance is a funny thing. Your driving in your climate vastly could differ from my driving in a different climate. Out west where it is very dry, and you spend your driving mostly on vast open stretches of road? You probably won’t burn up the fluid from hard stops, heat build-up, contaminated and humid air.

But you live in a humid place and drive in the city? Your fluid is going to need to be changed a lot sooner.

Bleeding brakes isn’t fun. You usually need two people, and sometimes some expensive tools. To bleed ABS, you often need a professional level scan tool. What I’m getting at here, is, it’s not cheap to do. Places that do it for you know that and are glad to charge you a lot for it. If you happen to have a vehicle with a brake fluid warning, and it is a type where the warning is done simply by miles or time, then there is a decent chance the fluid may be past its prime, or possibly completely fine.

Use this and save yourself some money. Perhaps at every oil change, or once a month, pop off your fluid fill cap and test it real quick. If the fluid is getting worn out, replace. If not, let it ride.

Cheap tool, saves you potentially thousands in costs associated with either running overly hydrated fluid rusting out lines, or wasted money changing perfectly good fluid.

I was looking for a way to check brake fluid without using up my Phoenix Systems test strips prematurely. Even though they test for two different things (the pen tester checks moisture levels and the strips check for copper levels), I was hoping that the results would show around the same scale range for each of their respective tests (ie, change soon, change now, etc…).

I tested the brake fluid with this pen tester and the results were 2.5% (3%+ is change now). I then tested the fluid with the Phoenix test strips and the results read 100 (200+ is change now). To me, that correlates pretty well to each other. So now when I test fluid, I can pull out the tester and check the results before wasting my test strips. If the reading is 2.5% or below, there’s no need to waste a test strip. If the readings is higher, then I can test with a strip to confirm it’s time to change the fluid.

I too question the accuracy of this pen device, but also don’t have one that’s calibrated to compare it to. It does however give me a number to put on things, to give fluid a relative measurement to other vehicles I own.

I own two older vehicles and have never changed the brake fluid in either one. I ordered this brake fluid tester to check whether or not the fluid should be changed. Surprisingly, the brake fluid in each vehicle read low levels of moisture (indicating that I do not need to change the fluid in either vehicle). I put water in a container and tested the meter. The meter read extremely high levels of moisture in the water cup. I am unable to tell how accurate the brake fluid moisture reading was, but I do know that it does water moisture levels.
