Bébé Earth Anti-Tip Straps Child Safety Kit

The instructions were very clear and it was very helpful that they included an even clearer set of instructions. The installation was pretty easy. There are no drywall anchors included so if you think you are not going to have a stud in the right place, make sure you buy some drywall anchors. We installed a set of these for a dresser in our child’s room. The straps and heavy duty hardware seem strong. Once installed, I even tested it myself by pulling out a drawer partway and leaning with all my weight on it. The dresser tipped forward about an inch and did not budge any further. I’m satisfied this product performs as advertised! Very pleased!

Beware of the Positive Reviews:

Ten people posted reviews to these straps within a small period of time. Admittedly, many of them provided disclosure that they received this item at a deep discount to review it, but a little research shows that these reviewers give practically everything they review 5 stars, which makes me highly suspicious of the method of giving discounts to people to give an “unbiased” review. These are, indirectly, paid reviews in my opinion, but at least it is disclosed.

These straps are safety equipment, designed to protect your little ones from harm, injury, and potentially death. As such, the instructions should be VERY clear. In this case they are not. It is important, because if the strap is not threaded properly through the buckle, then it just easily slips through. The design is peculiar. The way the straps come you either have to remove the strap and flip it 180 degrees to put into the buckle, which would put your strap under (so that you would have to pull downward to tighten), or you screw in the stud plate with the screw hole above and the opening of the hook pointing up. Since the force vector would be up if furniture is tipping, I would worry that the buckle would unsnap. It is ABS, and seems solid, but I’m not 100% sure (and I should be). Further, the hardware is incredibly cheap. Any resistance from the material you are screwing into will practically guarantee that the Phillips cross will strip, making it nearly impossible to remove the screw, and leaving you with frustration and fear that the screws will fail if weighted. A product like this should at least provide quality screws.

Otherwise, this product is a good value. You should use two straps per piece of furniture for peace of mind. The ABS is solid, and seems much better than plastic designs that I have seen and used. These straps are perfect for lower furniture such as dressers, desks, and bureaus. I would not use them for tall items like bookcases, since they would be awkward to tighten. For those its cheaper and more secure to use L-brackets that are screwed into a stud and the top of your bookcase.

Overall, this can be a 5 star product, but they lost a star due to the cheap screws, and another star for the horrible instructions.

*UPDATE* October 28th 2015. So I’ve made a couple of edits to my original review, changing some of my original harsh language. The reason is that Julie has addressed or attempted to address the issues on this product. She is genuinely trying to address customer issues, and I believe she has a potentially excellent product to market. I also understand the impetus to give the product to customers at a discounted price to get it out there and reviewed in the face of competition, but I don’t wholly agree with the practice for safety equipment.

Julie personally contacted me by email, sending a detailed .pdf of the instructions. They are much clearer, but still suffer from one minor detail: If the instructions are followed the “pull” strap is below the buckle. I worry that this may be a mistake in the way my straps were snapped together, but I will address this off-line with Julie. The point is that it is clear that she cares about their product and the safety of our little ones. She has also indicated that she will look into the issue of the inferior screws that are supplied with the kit, so it really looks like she is taking this issue seriously.

Worked as advertised. Happy with the result. Some confusion regarding the drill size to use in the instruction if your not used to working with drywall anchors. All in all I recommend as a good child proofing solution.

Enfin utilisé, plusieurs mois après achat pour fixer une commode au mur. C est nickel. Un bon conseil : inutile d acheter un kit spécial pour fixer la TV au mur…ces sangles ci auraient parfaitement fait l affaire si je n avais pas acheté, chères, un kit spécial TV.
