This coffee maker is small but can make a mighty cup of coffee. It is easy to clean as well. A nice investment 👌

The point of this coffee maker is obviously to create something cheap for people that only need to brew a couple of cups. A couple of the problems with this machine are that it does not have a showerhead water drip system and the water temperature doesn’t seem to be consistent (it does reach around 200 degrees F in the final parts of the brew, but is lower before that). The temperature is not something you can fix unfortunately, but there are a couple tricks you can do to overcome the way water drips into the coffee:

    1. Use two coffee filters. Place your coffee into one paper filter and then place another coffee filter on top of the coffee grounds. Use a toothpick to poke some holes into the top filter to allow the CO2 to escape (important for the next step). What this will do is allow the water that comes out of the spout to spread and cover the coffee grounds more evenly for a better extraction. When I do this, I don’t get the pit in the middle of the coffee grounds like you typically get if you’re running this machine in stock configuration.

    2. Use a smart plug to create your own bloom cycle. This coffee machine does not have a built-in bloom cycle, but you can manually create your own either by turning off the coffee machine for about 20 seconds a minute or two into the brewing cycle or using a smart plug to automate this. Since I use an Alexa Smart Plug to start my coffee automatically in the morning, I created a routine to automate the bloom cycle. I’ve included a screenshot of my routine in case anyone else wants to try it also. Note that although the recommended bloom time for coffee is 30 seconds, my routine does it in 20 seconds because the coffee machine will not start dripping water the instant it is turned back on.

After trying these two steps, there was a noticeably smoother taste in the coffee, and it felt like the extraction was much better. This of course is not going to be as good as a high end coffee maker or other brewing techniques like French press or pour over, but for the $25 you’re paying for this budget coffee machine, these two modifications will produce a very respectable taste for your morning coffee.

Honestly for an inexpensive coffee maker I’m very impressed. In my area we have very hard water and I’ve replaced too many other coffee machines. I figured this one was inexpensive so I wouldn’t feel bad if it went. However, all of my expectations were completely surpassed. This is the longest lastly coffee maker that I’ve owned (previously owned kcup style coffee makers) so granted I wouldn’t be able to directly compare to other drip coffee makers.

This unit is easy to use and my favorite part is how simple it is to clean without having to buy expensive solutions or go through a daylong process. I always buy freshly roasted beans and grind them right before brewing and the results have been excellent. My other method is making pour overs and this brewer doesn’t quite get to that standard but it makes up for it in ease of use.

One other thing to mention is that a lot of people that own coffee makers with a heating plate complain about is leaving the coffee on the plate for a bit will give it a burnt taste. This is something I haven’t experienced with this coffee maker. There were times where I’ve turned the machine on and forgot only to remember 20 minutes later and it didn’t taste burnt at all so extra credit there.

Lastly I’ll touch on the sneak a cup feature. Basically there is a spring loaded stopper that gets pushed up by the pot to allow the fluid in. As I learned when you pull out the pot it’ll drip a bit and ends up on the warming plate and can be messy. Also, you only have a very short time to do this so have a cup ready before sneaking or else the chamber will fill up and the stopper will not hold that pressure. I got lucky once in that exact situation and as it started to stream out I was able to replace the pot to minimize the mess but just be aware.

    Overall definitely worth the money!

Love this little small Black+Decker coffee maker. It works well for me. Very suitable for one or two person. Made very well coffee and gives good aroma with the right amount of grounded coffee and the right amount of water in the maker. Takes very little space as it is small and easy to handle. Highly recommend for small apartments.

Great coffee maker. Ideal for tiny spaces. Really easy to use.
Only problem is that you have to wait until the process is finished to take the pot, it doesn’t have a stopper like bigger machines

Several days later – A wipedown with baking soda fixed the problem below, completely! Whatever it was it was on the surface. That was the only issue and for $20 this is really a great little pot.
i’ve been using a Clever Cup pour over method for years and it makes a really beautiful, robust cup of coffee, but I’m getting old and even fooling with a water kettle is tedious first thing in the morning. I’m still working out getting just the amount of coffee I want but I’m perfectly happy with the new brew. Was going to get a timed one but it’s so easy to just set it all up the night before, wake up and just push the button. I use a VERY big mug and there’s way more than enough to fill it. Very cute, easy as pie to brew, plenty hot enough for me, and oh, there’s no ‘pit’ in the grounds when done – they all get well saturated. Absolutely zero mess, and the hot plate works. A bit of sludge at the bottom of the pot, paper filters fix it but I don’t mind it myself. (Get flat bottomed round ones, #2). It gets all the best reviews for best budget 5 cup model, and I’d say it’s a bargain.

I haven’t had this long enough to write a proper review – it makes a nice, full bodied cup of coffee with very little fuss. BUT- and no one in all of the searched reviews mentions this problem so maybe mine’s an anomaly – the carafe smells absolutely horrible. It’s the lid or the handle, a very strong unpleasant plastic or glue smell. I’m not real sensitive to smells at all and have never minded the usual new-stuff odors of plastic products that bother others, but this is really bad. You can’t smell it much until it heats up. Can’t smell the coffee at all, just that burnt plastic smell. I did a full plain water pot first, per instructions. It’s not rocket science. I guess I’ll just fill directly into a mug for now and save up for an Oxo. And contact the company if I can figure out how. Yuk.

If I could give ten stars, I would. First, I purchased another manufacturer and put up with it for four months, but I could not take it anymore. My new Black+Decker is far superior and a third of the price. Higher dollars do not equate to superior quality.
The design creates an effortless brew and clean-up. The coffeemaker brews hot coffee without grounds spilling over into the pot. The construction is solid, and the water dispenser has six holes to thoroughly and evenly saturate all coffee grounds, creating an excellent cup of coffee.
I am finicky about my coffee and the ease of brewing it; thus, I have ordered a second Black+Decker to tuck away.
    You will not be disappointed…

This coffee maker is good for one or two people. If more than that are drinking you should buy a full sized model.

Tried to save a few bucks by not replacing my Mr. Coffee and decided to go with this Black and Decker, a well known brand name. Not a good move on my part. This did not make a good cup of coffee. The filter left a lot of sludge residue on the bottom of the pot so the last cup of coffee had to be dumped out and the coffee never was hot enough. I had to put every cup of freshly poured coffee into the microwave for an extra 30 seconds to get it hot enough to enjoy it. So, I ended up buying a new Mr. Coffee anyway. Lesson learned.
