This is a great little camera, and would be a fantastic choice for someone who is new to DSLR. I learned how to use 35mm SLR first, so it was an easy transition to digital.

Exposure (f-stop/aperture) ISO, focus, shutter speed, and white balance are all able to be controlled manually on manual mode. At 18 megapixels, it shoots very pretty stills, and even with the included lens I can achieve a soft background.

I bought this camera specifically to shoot video, and it does make a sharp and pretty image. That having been said, there are some drawbacks as this is primarily a still camera. It can only write files as large as 4gb before automatically stopping recording. I haven’t found any way to make it continue without manually restarting. This is only a minor irritation and easily enough corrected. I use it as the main camera for the close-up when I video my dad’s church services (www.godtel.org, any of the recent videos will have HD footage shot by this camera). Since I know when I’m going to be cutting to another angle, I just reset this one while it won’t be up and problem solved.

I soon hope to get better lenses to go with it, but as far as I can tell, this is the best bang for your buck for a starter DSLR with full manual controls.

Good solid camera with bright eye screen in view finder. View finder has light sensors arranged in a crosswise diamond shape with 9 points of light tracking, so is it center sensor? Perhaps averaging metering, but it appears to be center weighted. Back screen doesn’t move, but displays all the needed information. No external microphone port, but does have useful USB and HDMI (mini) ports. Sharp imaging across the visual field with little parallax to cause fringing around the edges. Excellent controls in manual mode, although the camera in movie mode shuts down after 30 minutes +/- which is annoying. Good beginner’s camera, but for more advanced users, I’d recommend getting the T6i instead.

This camera is my first DSLR, and is the perfect camera for that scenario! It has been great for introducing me into the whole photography world, and I cannot believe how far I have come with two years of use. Yes, It is not as good as the T5i but for most beginners spending that much money may not be the best idea. I didn’t like the camera the strap, but I ordered a more stylish one and it has been great.

So, overall, if you are just getting introduced into the camera world a Canon EOS Rebel is the best idea. Of course, it may be a better idea to go with the T6 or T7 now, and a T6i or T7i if you are more interested in videography. I am thinking of moving on in another year or two, but this camera has been amazing!

All the photos were taken with the lense that comes in the box.

Superb DSLR for the price! Great photo quality in almost any scenario / condition, long battery life, and included Canon 18-55mm Imagine Stabilization II lens works masterfully and makes this a great value package. Eye-Fi Mobi 16GB SD card works well… at least with photos — haven’t shot video yet. Be sure to use a Class 10 or UHS-1 or faster SD card if you are going to shoot video — this will ensure a fast and smooth write process to the SD card (this is also true for pics). Not sure why cameras can’t take high quality yet somewhat small PNG image files — a max-quality JPEG isn’t much smaller than a 24-bit PNG yet noticeably lower quality, as PNG is lossless compression and JPEG is lossy.
Moving on… includes a stand mount on bottom. Easy to use for anyone and will feel very familiar to Canon users. Be sure to read up on how to access and utilize more advanced features — you paid for them and it’s got the capability. For us casual “photographers” wanting something better than your common Point-and-Shoot, this is it. I.E. if you take a lot of scenic photos traveling and/or family photos, do yourself a favor and take those pictures that will last forever on a nice camera like this.

I’m from the old manual camera days. I thought this took great pics it’s just heavy and wieldy to go on vacation using but pics are SO much better than most point-n-shoot. Please Canon. Release the download software.

So far I have really enjoyed the camera. The basic lens that comes with the camera does just about anything you want. The added software allows for some great control if you have a laptop (and I’ve heard an android tablet) to do live view and some custom settings.

I have been taking pictures of the stars/milky way with the camera, which have turned out very beautiful. If I had to do it all over again, I may have spent the extra money on the T5i. I have mostly figured out the short cut buttons to make quick changes in manual mode, but it would have been nice to just touch to make changes.

The T5 does not have auto focus when you make videos, so if you are interested in using this to shoot videos, either be ready to not move the camera, or get good at manually changing the focus. The T5i does do auto focus. I have not had any issues with battery life, appears to hold up well to live view and taking long exposures, which come with night sky shooting.

I did, some time ago, pick up a Santin 256Gig U10 Micro SD card and the camera has no issue with writing to such a large card. RAW files around about 18meg, and the .jpg files are around 4.5meg each. So 265,000 megs of memory is plenty, like 14,000 RAW photos!

I also had an old external flash from a project that I didn’t need it for. Interestingly the camera say it’s not a supported device, but still fires the flash. This only works in manual mode, since the camera assumes that the flash is not there and will not compensate for it.

This camera is just plain awesome!

We upgraded from the cheaper point-and-shoot pocket cameras and I was wondering which DSLR camera to get. I mainly compared Nikon to Cannon and asked several Best Buy employees pros and cons. Basically it comes down to this:

Cannon has slightly better electronics to the camera and the interface/menus seem to be a little more intuitive.
    Nikon has slightly better lenses.

So we purchased the Rebel T5 and the battery life is excellent and has been a great entry level DSLR camera. the only downside that I have ever noticed is that this has 3 pictures continuous speed. But that was only a slight disappointment coming from an iPhone 5s that has about 10 frames per second for rapid speed pictures. But I’m completely satisfied with this camera and it takes great pictures for how we use it. As always the camera doesn’t just MAKE good pictures, you have to obviously use it correctly and on the proper settings (meaning you can still get some blurry pictures if you don’t pay attention)… For just coming into the DSLR camera scene myself I found the Cannon Rebel T5 to be just a great product and I will be more inclined to get another Cannon next time.
