I’m not a musician but love to read about creative people who are passionate about what they do – this book was fascinating in bringing alive in equal measure the magic and the struggle of a creative person’s life. Something that really struck me was how creativity spreads out all around us, into our tools and instruments and into our relationships – into history – and that there is a broader, larger life to making, be it music, art, writing, crafts, a life that lasts so much longer than a lifetime. It actually made me follow up the clever QR code in the book to music links listed in the book which are on her website. Made things really easy for me as I don’t know a lot about classical music.

I know this is a present to come, so not yet read. I am a cellist so I know it will be a joy to read. Good reviews all round..

I bought this after seeing a good review in the Spectator. Being a cellist and Viola da Gamba player, I thought it would make excellent holiday reading. The subject is potentially interesting. When I read the review I imagined the silenced ‘cellist would be Jaqueline du Pre, the inspiration that propelled me to take up the ‘cello and whose music I adored. I can still feel the tremors inside me from the day when I met her at Beare’s waiting for my repaired bow. Instead there are potted biographies about four ‘cellists I have never heard of. That’s not the problem. The problem is that they are obscure for a reason. This is probably a well researched book, but it is boring. So far I am only half way through and have struggled to force myself to keep going back to read a bit more. Part of the problem is the author’s prose style and part is the fact that she is not a natural raconteur. It has been my privilege to have a musicologist and writer of music in our family. He was charming and erudite and would fill the whole evening with gossip and snippets about the famous composers and performers alive and dead. His books are a bedside treasure. I cannot imagine wanting to read any of this again. There is too much about the author and not enough about her subject. Why she decided to travel to places in Europe where the ‘cellists had lived and died to play her own ‘cello in the street is beyond me. Once is acceptable, but to keep repeating the same story over and over again is mind numbing. Perhaps this is a sort of therapy for her own modest career. Sadly I will give it away, possibly without reading the rest. Nice dust jacket. Photos inside are blurred and badly printed.

What a wonderful book – extremely well produced in research terms, readable and informative about a fascinating topic in history. My grandson plays the cello and this was bought for him. I would highly recommend anyone interested in music and in history to read it.
