I got the wild idea to set up a router with USB to ethernet because I didn’t have enough space to set up another PCI-e card. But you know what I had enough space of? USB 3.0 ports.
It took some testing to find which port would provide the highest line-routing speed possible and once that was done, my frankenstein router is running quite nicely if I do say so myself, lol

I recently bought a new laptop only to discover that they are now leaving off a LAN/RJ45 port. As I don’t always like connecting via WiFi, I ordered this to give me the connection I want. It is plug-n-play (do they still say that) and no downloads are needed. It plugged right in and worked right away. There seems to be no impact to my speeds. Now I need to order a USB splitter. Between this LAN adapter, the keyboard/mouse dongle, the occasional DVD drive or number pad, I’m going to run out of USB ports.

I got this adapter to try and add an additional network interface to my OPNSense router that is running as a VM in Proxmox. At first it just worked right out of the box. I got failover networking running, tested and life was peachy, but after a few days I noticed I had very slow interenet access. I thought I mighh have failed over (my fail over was StarLink) but when I checked my IP it was my main fiber connection. I then checked out OPNSense and the load was over 10 (on a quad core) and it was incredibly slow. Looking at the logs I reallized that this NIC was connecting / disconnecting over and over. I disabled the interface and everything returned to normal, but now I had no failover.
After a ton of research it appears that this is a known issue with the Realtek 8153 drivers (Linux uses the 8152 driver which includes the 8153). There appear to be some work arounds (like blacklisting the driver on the Proxmox host and then passing it through as a USB device (I had setup a bridge and was passing the bridge through) but I need more time to test. The real issue is that the host (proxmox) also shows the disconnect / re-connect which is more concerning as I thought it was just a VM issue.
Anyway, if your going to try and use this for Linux, do some research on your OS kernel and the Realtek 8153 drivers. I also have read there are drivers from Realtek that i might be able to compile to try and fix some of the issues but also have not had time to go that route.
I also tested this on my windows laptop and it worked out of the box with no fuss at all. I was able to pull full gigabit speed off of my NAS with zero issues at all.

Remember when a laptop had an ethernet port? Not anymore. All wifi, all the time… until you need actual speed.
My kid needed full speed internet for VR gaming and wifi speeds weren’t gonna cut it.
The cheap, little adapter is fantastic!

I have a mini-pc and the wireless and wired networks adapter suddenly died. I needed to load updated drives onto the pc to fix the issues. This USB internet adapter came to my rescue. Quickly installed and automatically configured itself on my Windows 11 PC. With this I was able to connect back to the internet and fix my issues!

Finally had to get a new laptop to replace a dying one. Got a Dell Inspiron 7573 which doesn’t have a built-in ethernet port. This adapter truly couldn’t have been easier to use…I plugged it in and it just started working with nothing else required. Normally I use wifi but every once and awhile ethernet is needed for good internet, and for me this worked perfectly.

I wanted to love it. But it just didn’t measure up. It works for short bursts, achieves full gigabit bandwidth, but it is not stable for high throughput/long duration applications. My connection kept dropping after about a hour with a few zoom/team calls. Not cool.
