I highly recommend buying two of these. I have tried all kinds of dampeners for my kick. I went from the Kicker foam insert to the Evans dampening pad and love the tone. I purchased two so I would have the dampening on both much batter and reso heads. Look and sound great!!! I run a Shure 91a inside and an Audix D6 just inside of the port hole on my reso. The mix is great using the Evans dampening pad. I’m a weekend drummer with no endorsements so my review is an honest working man’s with the passion for a great sound. Don’t hesitate just buy 2 of them.

First let me address those who say it isn’t big enough to dampen both heads of a bass drum: LEARN HOW TO READ A PACKAGE! It’s not made to dampen both sides, fools! It says right on the package that it’s two-sided so that you can choose either lighter or heavier amounts of dampening by using either the smaller or larger hinged pad. You want to dampen both sides? Then get two.
Now, I’m a prior user of these pads, and they really contributed toward a beautiful, natural, warm bass drum sound. I got a new set and traded my older set in, and those older EQ pads went with it. The stock pillow in my new kit sound great, but I wanted to try to see if I could capture that tone I used to get, so I got a new set of EQ pads.
Big disappointment. The new ones are not as fully packed and rigid as the older ones were. Their effect on the drum was only moderate. (It’s not unlike Simon Phillips’ sound of a rolled-up towel taped lightly against the batter head.) I put the stock manufacturer’s pillow back on the batter side and kept an EQ pad on the resonant side, and it was much better, but still livelier than the old days.
My advice: These are really good if all you want is only a fairly small amount of dampening. But if you want some serious tone control, you’ll need something else.

Very cool piece of gear.
So first off, this thing goes in your bass drum to provide adequate dampening. This reduces sustain and soaks up high overtones you might encounter. The EQ Pad comes with velcro strips that you can
attach to the inside of your kick drum shell.
Setup is simple. Position the EQ Pad so that it rests slightly against your batter head, like you would a normal pillow or towel. The cool part of this product is the hinged design. When you strike the head the pad will “float off” slightly giving you a nice round sound, then it pops down and does its job dampening your unwanted sustain and overtones.
I tested the EQ Pad on two different kick drums. An 18×22 and a 14×20. I prefer my dampening devices to rest on both the batter (striking) and resonant (front/logo side) heads and the EQ pad just doesnt reached both heads in an 18in deep drum. It is however perfect for the 14″ depth, and I suspect it would work on a 16″ deep kick drum as well.
Perfect for rock, country, metal, and punk. Would not recommend for jazz.

This pad works great for me. I have a Pearl Masters 22″x18″ kick with Evans Emad heads; EmadII batter and Emad Clear reso… I also have a Kickport installed in the front head. The slight amount of “give” as the pad hinges forward after being propelled away from the head lasts just long enough to give the sound of my kick drum a satisfying amount of “body”, and actually increases the punchy sound at the same time. I’ve never had ANYONE come to my home studio and not comment on how good this setup sounds. I’m totally happy with this product, and would only caution that you cannot adjust the pad with the front head on! I was lucky enough to be giving some drum lessons and the student’s arm fit through the Kickport, so he adjusted the pad!!! Truth be told it was almost perfect anyway, as I’d used the following method: simply put a solid object of some kind (large cardboard box, piece of plywood, etc) in front of your kick drum with the front head off while adjusting the EQ Pad. Listen to the reflected sound as you change how much the pad is contacting the drum head. If you use a front head as I do, just remember the resulting sound will be fuller and more resonant with the front head installed; just less ‘boomy’… That’s it! Highly recommended as a very neat, clean effective method for damping your kick-drum resonance to your liking.

So this thing gets smashed in reviews. I understand why, but you need to understand the product. It is a light padded muffler. Not a 14 pound pillow. It’s design is made for movement, not for the purpose of pushing 14 pounds against your head. It’s to aid in tone, not completely stop it. Some peoples issues go much further than just needing a bit of tone control. Bad head choices, tuning skill and drum quality all matter to tone. So if your kick sounds better when you stick a 14 pound pillow in it… well, sorry about your dang luck.
If you don’t like the velcro situation, large Command strips will work very well and are removable without leaving a scar when used properly. This pad does what it says, it allows for movement and dynamics while aiding in tone control. Not overly so which is great. I only use this for jazz style tunings and heads that can cause more overtones than lower tunings and say, a PowerStroke 3. The kick I use 95% of the time is 20×16 Premier Maple Genista with a PowerStroke 3 batter. My reso fluctuates more with need. I don’t always use this pad because I tune a bit lower mostly, but when I need it I just put it in the drum flat and that’s it. No velcro. Due to the size of this, and the 16″ depth of the drum this will touch a bit of the reso and a bit of the batter both. This achieves exactly what I need without over doing it. I recommend this to those people that don’t need EXTREME muffling. Great product.
