I had to replace it it’s our in our aquarium and I liked this one because it puts air back into the water. Three days after it was installed we couldn’t find one of our fish, so we thought maybe one of the other fish attacked it. The next day we couldn’t find our large Snail or the baby snail. We really got to looking then and used a mirror to see underneath the filter and sure enough the snail was stuck to the bottom and no longer alive. Only part of the snail was still in its shell so that tells me there is a pretty strong suction that is not safe to be in fish aquarium. That night I had to console our son, he cried for almost an hour, because of his snail. We never found the fish so I can’t say for sure that it was killed by the filter but there’s a good chance.

The first time I removed it from my tank, dirty water came out of it, back into my tank. You have to remove it really quickly after unplugging it. The suction cups, sometimes fall into the tank and you have to fish them out. The little tube that attaches to the filter and helps give air to the bubbler, fills with plaque. I couldn’t figure a way to clean it out since the hose is so small. I will probably have to buy a new hose in the future. I love all of the bubbles. So do my fish. It works really fantastic as a backup filter for the tank. It has no charcoal, just the sponge. Just squeeze out the sponge under water and put it back in the filter. I would order it again.

It’s a good filter, works well, was wondering why it stopped working though, found out from my daughter screaming that her African dwarf frog was stuck on the bottom, get her out and she was fine, but she kept getting stuck, I was to scared to take my eyes off the tank. Then just now, it killed my molly. Was again wondering why it was on, then off then on and off. Seen our frog stuck, still didn’t work, looked under and my white Molly was lodged in there. So I took some screen I had laying around and a new tie off, cleaned them thoroughly, put it on the bottom of the filter and so far, nothing else has been getting stuck. So beware of that, fix it up it should be ok after that. Hopefully in the next couple days of searching I’ll find a better alternative

UPDATE EDIT- It’s been about 4 months now, and it’s still working great. It’s very easy to clean. You can just unlock/twist the compartments from the suctioned white top during a water change, and pull them out. Rinse them in the siphoned water, then reattach them. Also, don’t forget to unplug it when changing the water. There are tetras and even smaller emerald rasboras in this tank, and no one has been sucked/stuck. This filter is probably moving more water than the aquaclear 50 hob on the other side of the tank. A piece of flake food can travel a full clockwise circle in this tall tank. I’ve just kept the sponges in there most of the time, but it was blessedly easy to switch out media when I did. Easier than I’ve experienced with other filters. So far, this filter has provided the best value for money I’ve spent on aquarium equipment. Thank you Fishkeeper. This filter might be too powerful for a tank with delicate animals like shrimp or seahorses or for tanks 15 gallons or less.

Just love this filter! Powerful, versatile and easy to clean. I have a sand substrate, so I wanted a filter where the impellar would be relatively safe from potential sand particles (petco black sand + seachem black sand). The impellar is on top, and particulates have to travel through up to 3 sponges before possibly hitting it. I’ve been running this filter a little over a month with no problem. I used just two of the compartments for a few weeks and recently added the third. There are lava rocks underneath the intake tube just to put some barrier between it and the sand. It’s easy to change the sponges out with different media. The sponges themselves have removable center inserts. Very easy to clean, and debris doesn’t go all over the place when you unplug it like some other internal filters. And you can adjust oxygen flow! A simple design and very effective. There’s plenty of crap out there, but this is great! So thankful because I’ve wasted money on said crap in the past. This does exactly what it says, and the price is great. This tank is a topfin 37 gallons.

I have this in a 75 gal tank with 2 red eared sliders. That act like they are always starving, and they live with a teenager than feels for them … cause he is always starving. So if you have met turtles, you know they are messy creatures. Full of pooping and making messes.

This filter is quiet, and amazing. i only have 2 of the 4 sponges/ tower sections in the tank doing the dirty work. Before I got this I only had a canister in the tank rated up to 100 Gallons. And it was struggling, and the tanke was a mess by the end of a week.
Adding this sponge filter to the tank to work along side the canister filter I can get to 2 weeks before I am going ok better clean the filters… and the tank is still looking pretty at that point. (minus the poo/food I need to vaccum up on the tank floor.)

So look no farther for your sponge filter!
Axolotl owners ( i have an axie tank I am about to buy this for) let me warn you when it goes in fresh and clean, it has some crazy push power of the water…. so be sure to position the nossel that shoots out the water toward a corner/ wall / away from the main part of the tank. Otherwise at least when its freshly clean, it will make too much water movement, and possibly stress out the axie. But it will be able to keep up with their bio load based on what it does for my turtles. I would pair it up with a canister filter though like I did with my turtles, and plan to do in my axolotl tank, completely so keep up with bio loads.

I keep, on average, 35 minnows & 15 bait fry in my 30 gal aquarium, they are messy. This filter totally changed the appearance and health of my tank as a whole its cleaner & more clear, I clean it every ~3 weeks. Its easy to assemble and dis-assemble for cleaning. works best sitting on the bottom since it must be completely submerged. And suction cups are pretty good. Love it and fish do too!
