i use this filter on all sizes of tanks, from 10-15-20 long-29; does an amazing job for all. easy to use custom filter media for, and aquaclear products are easily worth the price with their packs of 3 at any aquarium store. lasts a long time and is silent, and easy to use. just dont force things into place whilst assembling as it is plastic and in the grand scheme easily broken. replacement parts readily available and cheap. aquaclear is the best HOB available.

First off, this filter is pretty great. As far as HOB filters go, aqua Lear makes it super easy to use and customize your filter media configurations with their basket insert. The filter runs quiet, and moves plenty of water. The only complaint I have about the filter is the flow Rate adjustment is less than ideal, it works, but it’s more of an all the way on or semi slow flow. No in between.
The reason this wasn’t a five star review is because as you can see in the photos, my filter came new in the package pretty beat up, scratched and chipped in a couple places. I needed the filter ASAP give. The birth of fry and the need for new tank quickly so I wasn’t going to send it back so long as it worked. Nothing too crazy, just a little irritated to get a brand new product and it’s scratched and scuffed over the entire filter.

Quiet, filters very well.
Contrary to reports, I have seen them keep prime for 3+ hours and start up with no problem. BUT i do keep my water level at the black rim piece.
Some parts are interchangeable, no need to buy replacement cartridges.
I run sponge filters on the intake tube, this keeps fry from getting sucked in, add reduces the need to clean the internal filter media greatly.
The next best thing to a canister.
Tidals appear to be great also, but for the fry situation, I would be closing some pathways off with aquarium silicon, and they are more expensive, so that puts me in the Aquaclear camp.
Sometimes the cover rattles – or maybe echos somehow – I place a rubberband holding the cover down and the noise is gone. These are also fairly easy to clean. I am always left with a sense of “that wasn’t so bad’. The re-usable media is a big plus.

Works exactly as expected. It’s very quiet, pumps efficiently, and filters extremely well.
One thing to note- when I first bought this and started using it, it was pretty noisy. After about a week it became whisper quiet, to the point where it’s hard to tell if it’s even on sometimes. I think this is due to the fact that the impeller doesn’t sit very tight in its housing. However, this is a good thing because it allows for a small amount of algae/ gunk buildup on the impeller’s parts and that’s inevitable. Once that builds up, the impeller functions much better and silences itself. I’ve tried cleaning the impeller for maintenance and it becomes loud again until the gunk builds back up, so now I just leave it alone with no issues at all.
Another good thing- The filter process on this is extremely efficient. The water flows up from the bottom of the filter housing through 3 separate levels of filtration (sponge, charcoal, bio-blocks). This works soooo much better than the bio-wheel filters I’ve used before. Additionally, this filter has a bypass system, where if the filters get too clogged the water is still free to flow. My filter has become extremely full before with hardly any need for the water to go through the bypass, this filter is awesome at what it does.
Once the sponge filter is dirty and clogged, there’s no need to buy a new one to replace it. I’ve been rinsing/ wringing it out every water change for months and it still works like it’s brand new (rinse out in the water you just removed, not tap water. Tap water can cause chemical shock and start a re-cycle of your tank). I also gently swish around the charcoal filter but mostly leave it alone. Try not to touch the bio-blocks, you don’t want to disturb the bacteria that grows on them. Rinsing or cleaning that is a BIG no-no. You’ll be surprised how much gunk comes out of the sponge when you clean it, you can really tell this thing does its job well.
Bottom line- excellent product. Will definitely buy again if needed, would definitely recommend.
Tip- buy one just slightly bigger than needed for your tank, I’ve always found this to be more efficient. I use this in my 20 gallon tank, even though it’s rated for up to 30 gallons. If the current is too much for your fish, use the built-in flow adjuster to tone it down a little (think about it this way- if you buy one rated for up to 20 gallons, and use it in a 20 gallon tank, you’re using it at maximum capacity and won’t get as good results. Using one designed for up to 30 gallons will give you a “buffer zone” and will work better overall)

Este filtro es buenÃsimo, acabo de comprar uno nuevo después de tener uno funcionando por NUEVE AÑOS DE MANERA ININTERRUMPIDA, al final, tuvo una falla en la propela y preferà cambiar todo el filtro pero todas las partes incluyendo el motor siguen intactas. Lo mejor de este filtro es que aunque cuesta un poco más que los competidores, a los pocos meses se recupera la inversión debido a que los materiales filtrantes se cambian por cualquier genérico, ahorrando un dineral en estar comprando “consumibles”. Recomiendo cambiar los canutillos por Matrix para una mejor filtración biológica. La esponja solo la cambie una vez en 9 años y pues el carbón activado se consigue donde sea. Sin duda vale más de lo qué cuesta además de que su funcionamiento es buenÃsimo manteniendo la pecera siempre limpia, solo aconsejo darle una limpieza a sus partes por lo menos una vez al mes para que siga funcionando perfecto y reemplazar el carbón activado cada 2 o 3 meses.

I ended up purchasing the Aquaclear Power Filter 30 for my 10 gallon freshwater tank based on the high reviews on Youtube videos (I got the 30 because the 20 was so small and after watching reviews and reading posts people recommended getting the 30 for a 10 gallon tank. I originally ordered the 20 but it was too small so I exchanged it for the 30 and I am very pleased with having the extra space to put more media). I previously had the TopFin filter that came with my aquarium that just had a filter with carbon inside. That filter pails in comparison to this filter. To me this filter is like the creme de la creme of filters and at a good price. It also has a lifetime warrantee. I love the options of different filter media that you can use. Not to mention it is so quiet, you can barely hear it. It’s very tranquil sounding and I love that you can adjust the flow, too. My previous filter was black and this one is relatively clear in comparison which I like because you can see how things look and makes it easier to clean. It also comes with a leveler that I use and it works perfectly. I do wish that it was permanently attached and adjustable because every time I take filter media out and move the filter it pops off. That’s my only issue I have with it and it’s not even worth docking a star because I love this product so much. After viewing YouTube videos I opted to add filter fiber/floss to help keep my aquarium clean and it has worked wonders. I highly recommend this product and adding filter fiber/floss to your filter media holder. Purchase this filter! You’ll be very pleased if you do.
Note: I ordered the Aquaclear Power Filter 30 to replace the 20 because I thought it was too small. When I opened the packaging the product had a white grime on it as if it had been previously used. I simply did an exchange and the new one they sent me was clean. I didn’t deduct a star because this was about quality control not the quality of the product. The quality of the product is hands down the best.
