Overall it’s an excellent little camera that is well made. Image stabilization is quite good and video quality is excellent. But there are a few issues.

Battery life is not very good. You can expect realistically to only get about 40 minutes out of a fully charged battery. I really expected better from an action camera like this, but I knew that going into this.

This thing gets hot. I mean seriously hot. Not to the point where it will burn fingers, but it will get hot enough that it is uncomfortable to touch. Electronic equipment can quickly degrade and fail if temperatures get too hot, so if the outer case is getting this hot the components inside must be getting much, much warmer. This makes me wonder just how long this thing is going to hold up under extended use.

Trying to use the camera by using only the tiny touch screen on the back is more than awkward.

The app you are encouraged to download and install on your phone to control the camera is a problem. It seems all it really does is try to force me to subscribe to cloud services and editing software I neither want nor need.

I wanted a “budget” GoPro and I’m so glad I chose this. Videos and photos are outstanding. Still learning how to use it. I don’t wish I chose a newer model instead. I’m happy with this camera.

I purchased a GoPro hero 9 in Sept 2022. In May of 2023 I took the device in the river while on a hike. Water leaked into the battery area. The device stopped working. I called customer support who said the warranty has expired (must be 6 month warranty). And because I had not purchased their subscription there was nothing that could be done. Lesson, don’t take your go pro in the water without a case, despite the claims of being water resistant. They suggested I was responsible for making sure the device door was clear of debris ??????? Thanks gopro.

Waited extra long for this package to arrive and when it did arrive only the gopro case was there… inside was an empty spot for the battery and gopro itself. My 10 year old son earned his money to buy it himself and was super disappointed after waiting forever then to have an empty case… not a happy camper. Now, we are in the process of returning an empty case to get our money back to go elsewhere to buy one… makes a lot of sense…

I have had a GoPro 7 Black for a while and bought this GoPro 9 as an upgrade. My primary reason to upgrade was for the in-camera horizon leveling, which is really great with the 9, and not a feature of the 7 or 8 (you have to do horizon leveling in the Quik app for 8). Horizon leveling in the GoPro 9 has finally achieved footage right out of the camera that looks like it’s on an expensive gimbal. It’s exactly what I need for my purposes. So it works for me.

However, other than that, what’s notable to me is how the 9 does not feel at all like much of an improvement over the 7. The 9 is not significantly better than the 7, and I don’t think it’s worth the extra money for most people.

If you don’t care so much about horizon leveling, I don’t see why you would choose the 9 over the 8 or even the 7. I certainly don’t see why you would spend $550 on a 10. And with the competition from the DJI Action, there’s actually even less of a reason than ever to choose GoPro over the other action cameras on the market today.

I like the 9 and it works for my purposes, but I feel like I’m paying a premium for the GoPro brand name and not really getting the features and quality you can reasonably expect in 2022 for this price. In fact, if the next iteration of DJI Action includes horizon leveling, I may abandon GoPro altogether and switch over to DJI.

My advice to GoPro: Stop focusing so much on trying to push your subscription service nobody really wants and re-focus on your roots of creating the best action camera on the market. Make big, innovative improvements on your product instead of just trying to release minuscule improvements every year. Even if it means you’re only releasing a new version every 2 or 3 years. Fire the consultants and MBAs working for you that are pushing you to cut costs and overspend on marketing at the expense of your quality and reputation. DJI is hot on your heels. People want to buy the best action camera on the market for the money. Will that be you in a few years, or will it be DJI? At your current pace, my money’s on DJI.

The camera itself is very good, but I’m giving it 3 stars because it is only a minor improvement over the 7, and I know GoPro could do better if they decided to. GoPro used to be synonymous with the best and most innovative action cameras on the market, but I’m not sure that’s true anymore.

So it’s advertised as being able to upload from the Camera to the Cloud… for which you pay an annual fee. It turns out this is not the case and they continue to market as such. It simply doesn’t work.. I have tried iPhone12, Pixel6 and Samsung S21… No go on either. In fact connecting to the phone in generally is sporadic at best. Here is the note I received from them today..

“Our team is aware of this issue, and we regret any inconvenience this may cause. Unfortunately, at this time we do not have a solution to resolve the problem. We will do our best to notify you if a fix is found, and please keep an eye out for updates to the product, which may include changes that resolve the problem. Thank you for your patience.”

What the say before you buy it…

“Fast, Reliable Connectivity: Super easy, super fast. Transferring photos and videos from your cloud-connected GoPro to your phone is simple and versatile, with your choice of effortless wireless upload via the Quik app or a lightning-fast wired connection via USB. There’s also unlimited cloud storage with hassle-free auto upload. Just plug in your camera when connected to your home Wi-Fi and the camera does the rest.”

    Dont waste your time.

Thought I’d enter the action camera world by playing it safe with a well known popular brand like gopro. Bought the gopro hero 9 black. I guess I missed the negative reviews regarding it overheating. Took it out in an air conditioned car for its trial test run using different resolutions / fps etc. After 20 minutes the camera flashed a message that it was overheated and was shutting down. Couldn’t get it to turn on after that. Googled the issue and then found the complaints of similar problems with this model. Product returned. Ordered a hero 8 black for one last chance with a gopro. Fingers crossed. Amazon service was great as usual.

Nothing bad to say- a great GoPro.

It does get hot quick, but it hasn’t shut down on me as I’ve heard and expected.

Video and audio quality is perfect.

Bought this on sale so the value was good but I remember why I sold my first go pro. The app that is out now for GoPro is absolutely atrocious. Everything in the app is pretty much stuck behind a paywall and the app barely ever functions as you need it to. Connecting your camera to the app is the most frustrating 20 minutes of your life. The camera would be worth it if you didn’t need the app for it to function.
