This DVD was not at all what I expected, but works so very well as a way to show possible dance interpretations of atypical dance music.
Ballet instructors and theatre directors will love this series for its open minded possibilities. I imagine,however, that music history teachers might be much disappointed with it. I intend to buy all the videos in the series!

This documentary is beautifully shot and the interpretation of the quartet is fantastic.
But watching it, I could not help but wonder why the makers choose this piece as the center of a Debussy documentary. It is without doubt beautiful, yet it lacks certain qualities and innovations that become more apparent in his later works. This means that the most important aspects in Debussy’s style – fluid tonality, exceptional use of instrumentation- are not discussed at all. Also, the biographical information supplied is superficial and incomplete, and the individual movements of the string quartet are embellished by scenes showing people drinking coffee, ladies fanning themselves or lascivious dancers in exotic costumes, which is somewhat off putting and has no informative value or in fact any relation to the music heard.
All in all there is no need at all to buy this DVD, just buy a sound recording of the string quartet, another one of Debussy’s orchestral works and consult your local library for a Debussy biography and you will learn much more. In fact, Wikipedia is more informative!
Needless to say, this DVD is quite a disappointment.

I saw this DVD in a music appreciation class and decided immediately that I wanted to buy the disk. The sound quality of the quartet was excellent and the visuals were beautiful and very representative of the era when the piece was written. Our teacher said most people either really liked the disk or did not like it at all. I liked it, and look forward to playing this for friends to show them one of my favorite pieces of music.

Very well filmed and directed. The story Frederic Chopin’s last years, when he was in love with famous female writer George Sand. All told through dance. Ingenious filmmaking.

This reminded me of the film “Cry Freedom” in which Donald Freeman is the narrator and main character, rather than the more important activist Steven Biko. Here, an actress playing George Sand narrates and is the focus more than Chopin. However, while the standpoint in “Cry Freedom” can be seen as favoring the majority viewer over the minority one, Sand’s centering is transgressive in that a woman is made the center of a famous man’s life, rather than having to be forced on to the periphery.
The actress is clearly seen as a woman, but she wears some men’s clothing. (The technical term for that is semi-transvestitism.) Sand is not portrayed as a passing woman, but is still acknowledged as a gender-radical woman. Other sources say that Chopin was a feminine man, but that is not brought up here. It is uncertain whether Sand had a romance with a woman, in addition to her many romances with men. However, the actress is seen dancing with women at one time and she also mentions “the love of a woman” in passing.
At one point, a dancer playing Chopin and a dancer portraying his father perform together. Both dancers look the same age and no effort was made to make one look a generation older than Chopin. This work emphasized musicians playing rather than dancers dancing. It is not known whether Chopin’s pieces are played in a chronological order in the way that his life is told.
Those concerned about the untimely deaths of artists from tuberculosis, like Poe, may appreciate learning about Chopin. Those who like to know about the dynamics of famous opposite-sex lovers, like the Shelleys or Frida and Diego, may find this work rewarding as well.

Don’t buy or rent this video with the expectation that you will learn anything about the music and life of one of the greatest 19th century composers. Instead, this program offers an interpretive dance routine set to Chopin’s music and George Sands’ writings. A complete snoozefest.

This one is not for everyone. The life of Schumann is told in short segments followed by segments of interpretive dance. The dance segments are excellent, and are choreographed to well played movements from his string quartets. To my own surprise, I’ve watched this several times and enjoyed it more each time!
