Matthew Elzie –
The good:
My guitar arrived quickly, and in reasonable, un-damaged condition. It had a nice factory setup, and was highly playable out of the box. It is a great guitar for the price. It would even be a great guitar at a much higher price point.
If this is your only way to obtain one, it could be worth it, but be aware of the following issues; particularly in regards to packaging and damage risk during shipping.
The bad:
1. Risky, minimal packaging. The guitar was barely packed into the box, with zero safety packing materials/padding. It is only held in place by a couple of flimsy cardboard baffles. Mine was fairly loose in the box, due to these baffles collapsing in transit. There is a paper-thin sheet of protective foam around the headstock, neck and body, presumably just to provide a minimum of protection against scratches. It certainly won’t protect against anything else. I was lucky my guitar wasn’t damaged in transit, but you may not be.
A hard case or gig bag is also not included, which could have mitigated some of that risk. I guess I just assumed one would be. To be fair, it does not state that there is one in the listing, so this part is on me. I still think buyers should be aware of this, though.
2. The pickups were extremely loose. They were also set way too low in the guitar, making the output unacceptably low through an amplifier. TV Jones pickups are very sensitive, and generally require being fairly close to the strings (about 1/8”) to get proper output levels.
They also cannot be height adjusted with the mounting screws, unlike many other brands. Instead, you will have to remove the pickup mounts and pickups, and use shims in the pickup cavity to raise them to a proper height. Gretsch typically uses wooden shims, but TV Jones recommends cutting shims out of mouse pad rubber, which allows you some leeway in adjusting the height via the mounting screws. This is what I did after looking it up, and it works. It is a fair amount of extra work I was not expecting though, so be aware of that. I’ve heard from others that it’s kind of a toss up if the pickups are shimmed or not from the factory. Some have had the opposite problem, with pickups being set too high, and had to resort to the same fix to rectify the issue. I’d advise buyers to be aware of this.
