My son has a K-Bar and I bought one as I have been in awe of his knife, abilities and adventures. He has dispatched and skinned hogs. He has field dressed and skinned many deer. It has built many of shelter and cut many of hanks of rope. It is razor sharp and holds a good edge all the while being able to be sharpened. He keeps the leather handle and leather sheath in good condition with oil. My knife arrived in excellent condition, razor sharp, sheath is a good quality leather.

Nice knife feels great in the hand. Durable and keeps an edge even after abusing it to chop wood.
Sheath is OK. After a while, I did replace the sheath with a hard sheath and a leg strap.

I’m a Marine, 1982-1986. My USMC ISSUED KA-BR 1217 was stolen from me by a dropout. I only wished him well, he obviously needed it more than me because as a Marine I can fight and win without it. O.K. enough of the brevodo, seriously this is the best knife anyone could ever own. Made right here in the USA (OLEAN NY) I’m an advad camper, bushcrafter, hunter, all around survivalist and If I have my Ka-Bar I will survive. GIBBS RULE NO. 9 never go anywhere without a knife (LOL) seriously if you are a knife enthusiast buy this knife, do not go for any of the knock offs they are inferior to the Ka-Bar 1217. The last knife you’ll ever need. Just don’t let a coward steal it from you. Semper Fi.

As a knife enthusiast and collector of hunting, camping, and all round survival gear i can say that this is definitely one of the finest Jack-of-all-Trade knives. This knife can be used for hunting, fishing, camping, cooking, digging, brush clearing, and just about anything you can think about. The super durable 1095 Cro-Van steel with a design that hasn’t changed for 60+ years is guaranteed to last 5+ generations of abuse and rough treatment. The handle is super comfortable, and the blade is razor sharp and holds its edge well. It can easily go through tin cans, and allows you to baton wood with ease. Carving wood is like shaving a block of butter with a hot knife, and overall it is one of, if not the finest knife i have purchased so far. The blade is perfectly balanced and you can really feel it with every swing. The sheath takes some breaking in, but after taking it in and out enough it becomes a really nice compliment to the knife. Really enjoy my purchase, and i’ll be using it for a long time.

Just received my new KA-BAR USMC Fighting Knife in the mail a day early might I add. I felt like a kid on christmas I was so excited. I should have added gift wrap option just for the extra excitement. Once I opened the box my jaw hit the floor and my eyes started tearing up. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen next to my fiance.

Now down to business. Knife came razor sharp out of the box with a fine point tip(I dropped the knife and the point grazed my shin and the point poked my shin right thru my jeans and sliced my shin and blood streamed down, I couldn’t believe how sharp it was). I also shaved a patch of arm hair off with a single stroke. The coating on the blade is amazing no blemishes at all, feels smooth to the touch and you can tell this blade will last for years to come with no rusting. The USMC stamp is great. I feel honored to be using a knife that some of the greatest warriors on gods geeen earth made famous. Leather washer handle fits my hand great and feels good too. Even though I live in the Greater NW and the Kraton handle would probably have been more practicable for wet weather climates, I just had to stick with the Original handle. I feel that this will last years to come if taken care of properly.

The sheath is great also. Even though it was made in Mexico it is still extremely sturdy, and great stitching. The leather is a lot thicker then I anticipated. The Marine logo is nicely stamped in the leather and once again I feel proud to wear it. Overall the sheath is really nice and sturdy. I cant get over how thick the leather is. The leather is a little stiff so I applied a couple applications of Saddle Soap and boy did it make all the difference. The sheath is super soft and it also helped remove/hide some of the creases in the leather, and it also brought out a nice dark brown hue in the leather.

Overall I give this five stars and would recommend this to anyone who needs a sturdy fixed blade fighting/survival knife, it will last you a life time if used/stored properly. I feel like a total BA just holding this knife. I also plan on buying one for my Marine Brother-in-law with the Operation Iraqi Freedom commemorative for Veterans Day. The prices Amazon has makes it affordable to give as a gift or to just buy one or two or even three just to have. I will also be purchasing the Ka-Bar Short USMC Fighting Knife with the Tanto Tip. I can’t wait to pass this knife down to my Son when he comes of age and then see him pass it to my Grandson when he comes of age. What is also nice is you can have the blade engraved without ruining the blade or finish. This is going to make a great family heirloom for years to come. Thank you Ka-Bar and Amazon!!!

I’ve had this knife for about 7 years now and it’s in as good a shape as when I bought it. It is a fixed-blade knife with a rat full tang blade (blade runs all the way through the handle but is slightly narrower than the handle to minimize weight). The full tang adds weight to the handle which shifts the balance toward the handle and makes the knife blade feel extremely light and maneuverable.

The knife measures 11.9 inches long with a 7-inch by 1 ¼-inch blade. It weighs a hefty .7 lbs. It uses a 20-degree edge with a clip point. The blade is 1095 Cro-Van carbon steel blade. Cro-Van is considered superior to straight 1095 steel. The 1095 Cro-Van carbon steel blades are easier to sharpen, will hold an edge longer than most knives, and resists chips, cracks, and breakage from heavy use. You can use this knife in the field for quite some time before it needs a sharpening.

The handle is one of my favorite things about this knife. It has a unique hardened leather (stacked leather) handle. I’ve read that the groves in the handle were designed to help keep soldiers hands cool and also allow liquid to easily drain away.

The full tang ends with a metal butt cap (the pommel) which is useful for hammering or smashing stuff. It also comes with a leather sheath that matches the knife handle’s unique design.

    Pros

    Unsurpassed blade quality.
Proven blade design, especially for fighting.
Sturdy, metal butt (pommel) for hammering.
Crossguard for protecting hands and prevent knife slippage.
Rat tail full-tang blade for increased strength.

    Cons

Blade is not stainless steel, so it is more susceptible to corrosion if wet.
At .7 lbs. knife is heavy.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better outdoor knife than this one. The knife is useful for everything from hammering, prying, opening cans, and digging trenches to cutting wood, roots, wire, and cable. It is virtually indestructible and will last a lifetime. I mean, come on, it’s been used by the U.S. military for decades. That says a lot.

A note about the unsharpened swedge. Ka-Bar knives used to come from the factory with sharpened swedges, the top side of the blade near the tip. They are now shipped with unsharpened swedges. You can rework the swedge to make it sharp or keep it as is for the added (thicker) blade strength.
