I can’t say that I hear any difference in tone – I’m not that good of a player and my hearing’s not that refined, but several saxophonists I respect are using heavy neck screws, so I thought it worth a try. Actually, I like how much easier it is to tighten/loosen the neck with a big textured screw instead of the regular flat type that feels more awkward. I tried it on both my Selmer alto and Yanagisawa tenor horns and it matches the thread size. If you have a Yamaha or other brand sax you might want to check with the vendor for compatibility. The inset Lapis Lazuli stone is a nice feature, but I would have preferred a polished brass finish to the antique bronze. This screw weighs in at 19g, a bit heavier than others I’ve seen, and arrived nicely packaged in a small jar.

Highly recommend if youre looking to upgrade and add some flair to your instrument. Affordable and well worth it.

The KGU music heavy mass neck screw claims to do what all other neck screws do: improve your tone and response. This claim is subject to the listener, but I believe it does improve tone and response in a small, but not entirely insignificant way. The metal part of the screw seems to be well made, and the plating is solid. It did take a bit of effort to screw in the first time, but after that it has been easily adjustable. The stone insert fell out within a day or two, but after gluing it back in, there have been no other problems. Overall, I would only recommend this product, which is quite expensive for what it is, for high level saxophonists who will be able to make use of the small timbre and response benefits.

I’ve been reading online and watching videos of testimonials around these weighted screws on sax necks.
I tried this out on a few horns. I would say:
1) it definitely makes you stand out.
2) from a player perspective, I can hear some level of difference in tone. I can’t say if it’s better or not. Maybe there was placebo effect that I hit altissimo with greater accuracy? Maybe it inspired me to practice more? 🙂
3) from a 3rd party perspective, I can’t hear anything difference in tone on a blind test.
From a price perspective, for the amount of gain, you might get better mileage out of some lessons or a trip to a repair shop to get your horn regulated. Or save up for a new mouthpiece to add to your tonal palette.
On the other hand, if money is no object and you’re just a gadget person, yeah, check it out. My perspective is anything that motivates me to spend more time playing is definitely worth it.
