The build quality is solid, just have to be EXTRA careful when tuning.. the chords are very easy to snap. Used mine as a prop for a skit.

This is an unvarnished basswood lyre, almost entirely finished except for the tuning pegs and the saddle which you have to put in yourself.
Ours was defective in two ways.
First, the saddle is too short. It’s about 3mm too short for seven strings.
Second, the lyre was only supplied with six strings—so it works with the saddle supplied.
With that said, for under €14 this really can’t be beaten. It’s supplied with a set of paint for painting it. We didn’t try. Instead, we have French polished it.
If you want to use this seriously to make music, you will need to do a couple of things.
First, the steel strings are extraordinarily sensitive to tuning with the supplied key. They also go out of tune fast, so you will need to stretch them like you would guitar strings. Properly stretched they should stay in tune, but will still be finicky to tune, so you may need to extend the length of the key.
Second, if you do want to use seven strings you will need to extend the saddle somehow. A cheap guitar saddle will do the trick. Cost about €3.
You can happily replace the supplied strings with old guitar strings, and the ball ends will work perfectly. These will also be ready stretched.
However, if you want a more authentic sound you should use nylon strings not steel strings. While nylon was unknown in the ancient world, it emulates gut pretty well. Nobody had the technology for steel strings. Again, old guitar strings will be fine.

A friend of ours who specialises in this gave the lyre three coats of French polish, each a week apart. It improved the sound dramatically.

Fun to paint! I could have used more instructions on what to do with the extra string once I pulled it through the tuning pegs. It works for what I wanted it for (a Bible study lesson in King David).

The media could not be loaded.
I have ADHD and recently I was wondering to myself: “Man, wouldn’t having a lyre be kinda cool?” But CLEARLY that’s just the ADHD impulsivity talking, and I’m a college student with no money and way too many things to my name already. Why would I want to spend 50$ minimum on a nice instrument that realistically I’ll only play a few times ever, one that I don’t even know if I’ll like to play?
That’s where this product came in: the cheapest lyre I could find! For the price of two fast food meals I was able to scratch the itch in my brain that wanted a lyre, AND it sounds pretty good (to me), too! Well, after I spent an hour tuning it, but that’s on me for being tone deaf.
Anyways, it doesn’t come with any instructions as many reviews have mentioned (outside of the ones in the product images) but it was pretty simple after a quick search online for images of 7-string lyres, what I should tune them to, and also after the downloading of a tuning app to help with it.
Now, is this a NICE instrument? No. It’s 15$. But it’s exactly what I would expect for 15$ and dangit it plays music.
I would also highly recommend this for children or just for a fun project, especially if you want to paint it or customize it for a costume or something. But be warned that it took me around an hour and a half of setting it up and tuning it, because it IS a stringed instrument that has to be tuned properly. Still, a young kid old enough to appreciate it that has an interest in music might find this a great start, and it can act as training wheels of sorts to see if you think you’ll actually enjoy playing a proper lyre someday.
Attached videos/images were me playing something after 30 mins of messing around with it (I’m not a musician). I also haven’t snipped the strings yet so ignore the mess, haha. In case anyone was wondering, I tuned mine to D4, E4, G4, A4, B4, D5, E5 from left to right (lowest to highest).
Anyways, great product, worth the price. Don’t expect professional quality, but it’s perfect for what I wanted.

Great quality. Love these!!

While the instrument is okay it is quite small…I sort of knew what I would be getting so I can’t complain..
However, I received no information sheet so I had to research suggested tuning. Also, no string identity.
Pretty straight forward to build but the lack of instructions made it harder and I had to spend too much time trying to find the tuning information and the string order is difficult to establish.

A little hard to assemble for the littles. But was a cute idea.
