If you need a small canister for your tank, then this will work, however, not without some modifications.
It has a bit of a struggle getting started. It stuggles syphoning. To help, I inserted a 2 in plastic tube in the intake side so that it could reach the waterline. I also took out a few of the filter balls to give room for suction. That solved the issue. Also, make sure it is tightly sealed when you clamp the lid.
With all that said, it cleans super well.
I have a hospital tank in a shelving unit that didn’t have much space for a hang on filter. Even though it is only a ten gallon tank, my pleco had back to back fry in my Cichlid tank. I don’t think I need to explain the urgency in removing them from a 135 gallon tan with 8 five inch cichlids. However, 30 pleco fry is a huge bio load for a 10 gallon tank. This canister cycles the entire tank in minutes.

I like this canister it is the great size for my 20 gallon tall. Easy to set up BUT…….
For the price I shouldn’t have to do so much to it.
It does need more bio balls in the filters instead of so much carbon.
I had to remove those and modify it.
My biggest issue is: I don’t like that the intake is far too short.
Even if you use the longer hoses it won’t set down like it should in the tank. I had to buy stuff to modify it. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.
Summer –
Just purchased this guy and completely set up a Brandnew 6gal bookshelf aquarium.. I put new dragon stone in but even after 40 mins of rinsing it didn’t get all of the crap off the rocks and it ended up in my tank water.. this filter sucked it right out!! Cleared up the tank in about 30 mins. I do suggest adding a secondary polishing pad between the 2/3rd carbon filtration area for some added cleaning power to the water for extra small particles. Especially if you are a CLEAR water nazi like I am. I’m running an actual canister under the exact same tank on my other setup which is also crystal clear however I will say that even though it’s crystal clear it’s luggy and large compared to this canister filter system. Both great but this product for the money and size is great! I highly recommend! Don’t listen to those saying this isn’t a nice filter! They’re doing something wrong!!!

Overall I really like this filter I have 2 of these running on two of my aquariums. The hoses are kind of awkward to route and the suction cups are not great. The filter works great and does a great job on small aquariums (10-29 gallon I’d say). Way better value for the money than any hang on back mechanical filter in my opinion.

While the filter does it’s job, in order to maintain the system, you have to make a large water mess. No maintenance instructions are included in the manual, and there is no stop valve for your intake/output so when you remove the cover water leaks everywhere!
