Petmate Litter Catcher Mat Extra Large, Model:22990

I have been looking for a large mat and this is one of the biggest I have found at a decent price. I had to put it outside when I received it since it smelled bad, it took a few hours and it was not smelly anymore. I have a large litter box that fit good on it. There’s enough room for the cats to walk on it after they are done with there business to ensure the left over litter get trapped in.

Seems really easy to clean off and sturdy enough to protect the floor. Really a good investment.

I’ve tried numerous litter mats in the past, and this is the only one that does a reasonable job of trapping AND holding litter. I have one cat that routinely leaps out of the litter box leaving a trail of litter scattering behind her. She’s so good at it, you’d think it was an Olympic sport! This mat is very large, which is needed to cover her “scatter zone” and the understated gray color which goes with every decor. I clean it weekly using the vacum cleaner which does a mediocre job of removing the trapped litter, although do be careful, my vacum brush caught the corner and ripped one of my mats a bit. It’s still usable, but I’m more careful now. Occasionally, I just take it outside, shake it to remove the deeply trapped litter then hose it down to remove any remnants. It dries fairly fast. One con is that the mat comes folded (just like the picture), and despite laying flat on the ground for months now, the crease is still there, slightly lifted up off the floor. It’s a minor trip hazard, so do take care if using this in the path of foot traffic. I’d hate to see my floors without this mat.

Love this mat. It is so big and works behind my couch along with other mats, rugs etc to keep liter from two liter boxes off my white marble floors. Make sure you have the space then buy with confidence.

I want to clear up a couple negative things I have read about this mat. First of all, it really doesn’t tear more easily than smaller mats; it’s a mat for catching cat litter not an outdoor floor mat so it is soft and flexible and if you are rough with it you will tear it it, so use two hands to pick it up and be gentle. The softness actually makes it so the mat can bend a little up the edge of the wall if necessary and keep more litter from getting away. Secondly, of course the litter is hard to get out of the mat, it’s supposed to be. Other mats will let the litter just roll off and this one actually catches it. That said, you will need to vacuum it or shake it outside. When I vacuum, I pick up a corner and shake it just a little to make the litter jump up loosely then vacuum and repeat a few times. Yes, if something spills on it it will get stuck: you have to blot and pick the mess straight up, you can’t rub it. Use lots of spray cleaner and keep blotting like carpet cleaning directions for stain removers. Then if you can, you can hose or shower it off too. It you have little stuck pieces in the mat, just get something pointy like a toothpick or paperclip and get it out. I have about a foot length of mat in front of my box and some litter still gets on my floor; I’m sure if I had a little more room the mat would catch it all, but really a lot of litter is caught in the mat and I’m glad for that.

We have 2 cats and their litter box is set up in a small utility closet. The space is perfect as it is out of the way behind a powder room in the basement. We use a ‘catdoor’ (look it up – highly recommended!) for them to get access which allows the door to be kept shut. I have been piecing together serveral mats, cheap astroturf, etc. to attempt to cover the space bewteen their box and the door. This mat is LARGE and fits the space almost perfectly. I don’t need to use extra pieces or worry about them being pushed around or scattered. The mat is pretty indestructible, completely waterproof, and does a great job of catching stray litter and any accidents. I actually bought a second mat to counter the only downside. While the mat is great at catching the mess that doesn’t stay in the box, getting the mat clean is a bit of a pain. Most dry litter can be vacuumed out of the mat, but if your cats are like mine and occasionally miss the pan, clumped litter can be difficult to remove once it has gotten into the mesh of the mat. If it is warm outside and you have a power washer, you can blast the junk right out. However, trying to get the clumped litter out of the mat or to clean it by hand is a chore. The 2nd mat allows me to change them out on a regular basis and take my time cleaning the one that is soiled. I have been using a couple of options to deodorize the mat between changes that seem to work pretty well – a vinegar/water solution, sports equipment deodorizers, and Febreeze. I’m not sure the last one does anything but cover the smell and I have no idea if the cats can tell. The first two actually address bacterial/microbial problems in addition to the smell. I’ve tried several other mats. This one has been the best I’ve found. If for some reason I ever need another one, I’ll be buying this again.
