Hooks a bit short but great nest construction.
Rainbow Bridge –
We have a large number of finches and occasionally one may suffer from a minor injury or one of the females become egg bound We have a separate cage for these birds and there is only one bird in the “infirmary” at a time so we have extra cages.Although these are called canary nests they work out perfectly for the birds that are having problems. Instead of have to fly into a small hole in a nest they can just jump in without a problem. It gives them a place to sleep and rest while they are healing. So I cant say how well they work for canary’s they work well for our finches that are having problems. The finches dont use these nests when they are healthy.

Woven wicker nest with metal arms that hook over the cage bars. Arrived as expected. Reasonably satisfied.
Sneaky Burrito –
I have three male zebra finches. They are brothers, the last of two clutches that hatched in 2009. They like to sit in their food dishes and in order to have room to do so, they throw a lot of seeds out onto the bottom of their cage. I got them some of these nests, thinking to give them an alternate place to sit so they wouldn’t make quite such a big mess and waste quite so much food.
Well, my birds were terrified of these at first. But that is not such a big deal. They are little birds, after all, and these were NEW THINGS in their cages. They are slowly becoming more accustomed to the presence of these, although they are not sitting in them yet. I’m giving it time.
Construction of these is solid. They will hold a fair amount of weight. There are one or two pieces of straw (or whatever they are made of) that stick out but that doesn’t detract from the overall performance. I have put some strips of toilet paper in these for nesting material since it is cheap, biodegradable, easily replaceable, and non-hazardous (don’t use cotton fluff or string as either of those can wrap around your birds’ limbs and cut off circulation).
The only thing I am not thrilled about is the means of attachment to the cage. The metal (you can see it in the product image) is kind of stiff and difficult to bend, but you really need to bend it so the nest doesn’t tip forward and fall. It would be far easier to do this in a cage without birds in it (so if you are just getting set up, add the nest first). Alternatively, it would be fairly easy to add your own attachment mechanism since you can slip narrow things between the twigs/straw pieces.
Overall, though, I’m happy with the purchase. It’s only been a few days and I’m sure my birds will come around. I’ve had pairs of birds (zebra finches or society finches only — I think I’d go with something a little bigger for a canary or parakeet) in the past raise several chicks in similar nests, so if you are looking for something for that purpose, as long as you make sure it is secure, you should be fine.

Just as expected. Great for my finch cage

This nest is a pain to install and clean but the birds do seem to like it.
Designed for canaries, this also works well for a variety of pet finch species. They seem to quite enjoy getting nesting material and filling this basket with it to make it a comfortable nest and perch. In that regard, it is a very good product.
However, I found this nest quite annoying to attach the the side of the cage; it required not just looping the cheap metal bars around the cage but also twisting them in (by hand) so that the nest is actually secure enough to hold bird. On top of that, because it must be secured to tightly, it made it difficult to get to and clean out periodically. Really, the whole thing just feel unwieldy in design.
While I did ultimately keep it because the birds enjoyed it, I was always on the lookout for a better, open-topped nest.
