We found our kitty, Goose, huddled in some underbrush in our woods four years ago during one of our coldest winters. She was skin-and-bones and half frozen, with her little paw pads partly worn or frozen off. She was only 9-10 months old but was quite feral and it took many days of setting out food and sitting quietly under a tree before she would begin to venture close. I finally got her trusting enough to follow me home, with her keeping a safe distance between us. I lured her into a side door of our garage (much to her terror)…and she’s been a part of our family ever since.

While it didn’t take her long to happily become a house cat, her early feral beginnings have kept her from being content only living in the house. She is adamant about going outside for short stretches every day and we’re okay with it since we live in a remote area far from busy roads. Her activity level is very different from our previous indoor-only cats, and I looked around for a higher-calorie food that would help to put some “meat” on her scrawny bones and provide sufficient energy for her high level of activity.

We’ve been feeding her this Royal Canin Adult Fit 32 Formula these past four years and she’s done incredibly well on it. She’s sleek and well-muscled and still has the energy level of a kitten. She also gets a small amount of Royal Canin Adult Instinctive wet food every evening. I’ve expected that we’ll eventually need to move her to a lower calorie food as she gets older, but since her activity level is still so high, she’s still nice and trim so it hasn’t been necessary yet. This Fit 32 Formula has approximately 500 more kilocalories per cup than regular adult dry cat food. While it works ideally for our 95% indoor cat, Goose, the Royal Canin website mentions it as being formulated for outdoor cats because they require more calories to maintain body temps in winter and are generally much more active.

Ingredients: Chicken meal, brown rice, corn, corn gluten meal, chicken fat, natural flavors, pea fiber, grain distillers dried yeast, dried beet pulp, vegetable oil, fish oil, calcium sulfate, potassium chloride, salt, DL-methionine, hydrolyzed yeast, choline chloride, taurine, sodium tripolyphosphate, vitamins [DL-alpha tocopherol (source of vitamin E), L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), niacin, biotin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), D-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin A acetate, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid], trace minerals (zinc proteinate, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, copper proteinate), marigold extract (Tagetes erecta L.), rosemary extract, preserved with natural mixed tocopherols and citric acid.

Our 6-year-old long hair mix chomps this down like no other. He prefers to be outdoors in the summer, only returning when he gets hungry. In winter it’s a different story – he doesn’t like rain or snow. This is the first dry food we have found that he will eat consistently.

My wife’s Persian also loved the Persian food, and lived a long, healthy life (19 years) eating it exclusively.

I was curious about the fat content, so I made a chart of all the Royal Canin “Healthy Pet” dry cat foods (not including the Veterinary specialty cat foods) – see attachment.

I have tried many, many other brands of dry food for my cats. They will only eat Royal Canin.

I have an assortment of four kinds of dry food for our five cats and this is the item they eat the most of. It’s very healthy and evidently tasty. In fact, I’ve even noticed a few kittens grabbing morsels of it, which is unusual for adult food (which is lower in fat and, thus, taste). But the main deal is the price. I was spending $31.99 at pet stores for this, and maybe – at best – $28.99 on sale. So, I’ll be buying it from Amazon forever afterwards.

UPDATE 12/1/15: I purchased this about a month ago at $29 for a 7 lb bag, which was a great price, but now the 7 lb bag is $40!! What gives, Amazon?!? I can get it for $35 at the pet store. I will be looking elsewhere to purchase cat food the next time my cat needs more!

Amidst the whole “whole pet food” revolution my cat remains on Royal Canin because he simply will not eat anything else. Once a vet recommended he eat a diet food to lose a few pounds (he was 20 lbs at the time, 18 currently), but he went on a hunger strike. I’m not sure what this says about Royal Canin Adult Fit, but my cat sure does love the stuff. He has eaten Royal Canin for all 15 years of his life, and he does not look a day over 7. I know he should be on the senior variation at his age, but he seems to be doing fine on this stuff. A quality cat food, and I will feed it to any future cats I may get as well.

Oh the joy of not having to luck a sack of delicious cat food through the market. Then into the trunk, out of the trunk anf. Finally FINALLY slamming it down on the floor to the relief of my two furry friends.
