JAY –
In the many years that I have used one of these I have to say this is the worst ever. I have a very old one that my grandmother brought from Russia when they escaped the Communist Revolution. This one is just a toy and I don’t understand the purpose of the little piece of wood burned pine that it came with. Pretty much useless.
Chris –
I was not expecting much from this jaw harp when I saw how small it is. I’ve taken photos to show it’s size, and included another one of my harps that I would consider to be a more traditional size.
When I tried it, even though it was small, it made a good sound. I was pleasantly surprised.
I’m not sure why it comes tide to a block of wood with a hole in it by a length of jute, but it does.
Why not five stars? Well, the harp looked like it had tarnishing from manufacturing on it. This is bad for something you put in your mouth to play.
I was able to clean it somewhat, but without sanding and polishing I’m not sure how clean you could get it.
Decent sound, very compact, kind of grody.

The media could not be loaded.
I had a blast playing this. I have never played one before. I watched a YouTube video and, shortly after, was on a roll. The quality is good. It’s not a cheap made for a little kid instrument to get thrown away eventually. This is the real deal and could be used in a busking-type situation. I love that it has a piece to keep in, too, but it would have been nice to have some bag or container, seeing as I can only tie it to secure it. Price is perfect and would make a cute gift for anyone who loves music.

I was excited to get this because I’ve wanted one for awhile!
It came shrink-wrapped, sitting on a block of wood and tied with a cord. It looked great!
When I removed it from the wrap, I realized that the “case” the listing said was included is actually more a “stand” or “display” – it’s simply a block of wood with a hole drilled through it for the bent-out pluck piece (obviously I have no education about these things, so forgive my terminology). The harp is held to this block of wood by wrapping the cord around both.
It is a very simple thing, but clever.
The harp itself should work, but it’s “Treble Clef” size is basically a little too small for the average adult mouth. A person must have a very small mouth with thin lips to hold this properly and get any sound from it without muting the plucker or getting the whole harp in the mouth.
I was able to (very carefully) get sound from it, so it does work … but this ought to be aimed at children.
My final concern is that this mysterious metal sitting on some kind of wood block that has been treated with some kind of chemical and then wrapped in some kind of cord does eventually need to sit partially in your mouth. Even after a gentle cleaning, the taste is like a copper flavor mixed with wood varnish.
This is a great novelty, kids will enjoy it, adults with tiny mouths will enjoy it, and it is inexpensive.

The construction of this harp is pretty rough. The welds are sloppy and my son (who is a music comp major) didn’t want to try it because it looked dirty. The woodblock is nice. It would be nice if it came with some instructions too.

We had never used a Jews harp before and at first we thought it was a dud. Then we looked up some videos and with a little more trying we started getting those cool sounds. Don’t give up too quickly, it takes just a little practice! A fun addition to all our weird instruments!

my husband has been wanting one of these for a while so got this one just because it was cheap and small. his birthday is coming up and so thought i would surprise him, but he opened the pack before i got home and was instantly super excited and had to take it out and try it. he’s still learning to use it and will take a little practice, but YouTube is great for tutorials for him! its super small so he can take in his pocket with him wherever he goes and has a string with it that he likes to put it on and keep on his neck around the house and will just pull out and try to start playing with it.

The item received looks exactly like the advertisement. They show the dimensions and closeup of what you are purchasing.
Pros:
+ Inexpensive
Cons:
– there are no instructions whatsoever so you’ll have to turn to social media, library, or someone who knows what they are doing to figure this thing out. My teeth were not happy
– it’s really small
– the products as delivered was not well finished especially given you are supposed to put this thing on your lips
– the “handmade carrying case” appears little more than a split 2×4 which looks like they hit it with a propane torch and branded a treble clef after drilling two holes. The “carrying” part is some twine.
I was a little disappointed in that I felt like the product was too small, factory dirty/unfinished as delivered, and came with a throw in case that look liked it was made in a wood shop by middle schoolers. Maybe that is part of the look/vibe.
Not thrilled with the purchase.
