I really enjoy using it and not having to carry a bucket mute around. In the pictures I included, I have all three sizes next to one another; the bass trombone mute is on the bottom of both pictures.
If you want an incredibly high quality replacement for a bucket mute that sounds exactly like one, then this isn’t it, but unless you’re doing $1,000 gigs, this’ll likely be fine for you to use.

Right size and fit. Excellent value.

This is a very nice practice mute – I play the Alan Raph low note exercise with it, and like the way it feels, as I protect listeners from the loud volume. It doubles as a pretty good bucket mute, and can even serve as a plunger if you forgot yours – better than your plain hand, certainly. I keep this in my gig bag all of the time.
(This is the second Softone mute I have owned I left the first one at rehearsal and never saw it again. When I bought this one I inked my name very large on the side of it.)
Some tenor players prefer the bass trombone size.
Devin Witt –
Very good economy bucket/practice mute. Unfortunately, they have stopped including the foam inserts so you will have to make your own to create a good fit for the practice mute. Response is beautiful in all registers, and intonation is nearly perfect.

Love the mute, sweet sound and easy to store. I accidentally got the large bass size for my 8 1/2 in bell, but it worked fine because when used as a bucket mute you leave it loose anyway. If I had to buy again I’d still go big, but only get the small bass size.

I’ve been practicing a lot since picking back up the euphonium. I want to practice more and am a second shift worker in a house of firsts…
This mute cuts down on the sound so much better than I thought it would. It also makes it harder to blow the instrument, which can be helpful but also wears out my lips/lungs. For those wondering, it fits my euphonium, with a roughly 10 inch bell.
R. Horton –
Works fine, sounds good, but it’s a bit too restrictive as delivered, needs the vent holes enlarged to let a little more sound out.
The weight and ease of use of this style is miles ahead of the fiber or metal versions. Doubles as a hat if you just hang it on halfway

This works really well. If you have a large, heavy, bulky Humes & Berg mute, you will love this very lightweight mute. Make sure to watch the YouTube video on the best way to use it.
