Parts of our lawn have gotten very compacted and my husband had been talking about renting an aerator to do our small front lawn. He was worried about a powered aerator damaging the sprinkler system, so he’d been putting it off.
When I saw this I figured I’d take a chance on it since it was a lot less than the cost–and a LOT less hassle–than renting one from Home Depot.
It arrived today and within 20 minutes my husband had it put together and was using it.

He said that it wasn’t difficult to put together and liked that it came with all the tools to assemble it. He did think it might have gone a touch faster if he’d used a proper crescent wrench but the included tools are absolutely good enough to get the job done.

Within 2 minutes of using it for the first time he was totally sold, and to be honest I couldn’t believe that the soil plugs that it was pulling up looked just like the product listing! I feel like that kind of thing doesn’t happen much any more in this day of Photoshop and AI, but the photos are accurate! Well, not the soil color, but the plug shapes.

The great thing about this manual tool is that you have total control over where the plugs are coming from as far as how closely you want to put the tool into the ground from where you just did, so you can have the holes packed tightly together or far apart, depending on how much aerating you want to do.

One caveat is that he had really watered the part of the lawn he aerated, so the soil wasn’t totally hardened. The ground here in Colorado can get very firm, and he’s had a soaker hose on that section of the lawn for a little while trying to get that part to green up a bit. As I was watching him use this tool I could tell where he’d watered the day before, but he could still drive the tool into the ground where he hadn’t watered it was just took more effort.

He says it’s absolutely worth $44, and he’s really glad he doesn’t have to deal with the hassle of renting a tool.

You will spend hours digging the plugs out of the tubes. Leaves a nice hole when it works.

We needed to aerate some areas of the lawn that had gotten infested with a ground cover plant. This tool was really easy to put together and use. It allowed us to make enough breathing room for new grass seed and the lawn is re-established. The birds are happy.

I’ll begin by saying this thing is short. Like child sized. The working length is 30 inches. Five minutes to a sore back. So I will be using steel bars to lengthen the tool. The inner diameter of the tube is 16 mm, or just over 5/8″. Using four or five foot steel bars to go from handle to foot bar will make it a lot easier to use.

Build quality could be a lot better.

The thickness of the tubes and quality of some of the welds makes me wonder how long this would last. They may need touched up. Notice on the bottom assembly, there is only one tack weld where the tube are together. If not a full bead down front and back, I would at least suggest two tacks on front and back then one at the bend on top. It would be a good idea to have someone use a stick welder to strengthen the joints, and to permanently join the top and bottom to the tubes.

Unless you can afford to buy one of the much nicer ones. This had a good rating, and I already have it and a stick welder. So I’ll play the mad scientist and see how well it works to use steel bars and frame strengthening to give it a proper makeover.

It does cut the ground rather well, leaving good- sized holes in the yard. The cores do push up into the tray, however after the first it did seem to get a little more difficult whether because of soil moisture or some other reason I do not know. Another review did say it was better to use the tool on a dry lawn.

It would be great if the foot rest was a plate instead of a tube. That may be something else I try out in the near future.

Putting it together couldn’t be easier, it’s four sets of screws, washers, and nuts. If you are going to use it as is, throw away the wrench they send and use a ratchet or a wrench.

It isn’t bad as is, especially if you give it to a kid to earn some allowance. It can definitely be better.

I live in southern California and during the summer my bluegrass/fescue lawn takes a beating from the heat and lack of water. I started off by using the aerator in the worst spots. Got the area wet first to be able to push the tool into the ground and get plugs. Very important. Then after the area was worked and the plugs were out I watered heavily to get water to the roots of the grass. Within 2 days I saw a positive difference in the area just worked. To keep things looking good I hand water the treated areas once or twice a week. Wish I would have found this years ago.

We live in an area where the soil can get very compacted and hard to work with even with annual, professional aeration service.
When I came across this manual aerator, I was hoping that it would be helpful. It exctually exceeded our expectations.
My husband was very impressed with the sturdiness of its construction and the extra tools included that made the assembly very easy.
The aerator requires some applied weight to operate, but it is manageable for an average person. The plugs that it’s pulling out are pretty sizeable, so that’s definitely something to keep in mind.
We actually ordered another aerator by the same brand with smaller tines for less compacted aeras.
I highly recommend it to anyone dealing with compacted soil or just looking to improve their lawn’s health.

Effective for it’s intended purpose. Clogs a little too easily but the included tool is good at clearing the tubes. Pausing to do so can get annoying but it gets the job done.
