I recently purchased the WORX WG896 12 Amp 7.5″ Electric Lawn Edger & Trencher to tackle the task of maintaining my lawn’s edges and creating neat trenches. Having used it extensively over the past few months, I must say that this machine offers great power and versatility. In this detailed review, I’ll provide an honest and unbiased account of my experience, covering key points and offering helpful tips for potential buyers.

    Design and Build Quality:
The WG896 boasts a well-thought-out design that is both ergonomic and sturdy. The handle is comfortable to grip, allowing for extended periods of use without causing strain. The construction of the edger is robust, ensuring durability even when encountering tough soil or roots. It feels like a high-quality product that will last for years to come.

    Powerful Performance:
Equipped with a 12 Amp motor, this edger packs a punch. It effortlessly cuts through grass, overgrown weeds, and even stubborn roots, leaving clean and precise edges. The blade’s 7.5-inch diameter is ideal for maintaining straight lines and crisp borders. I was impressed by its ability to handle various terrains, including sloped areas, without losing power or creating uneven edges. It’s worth noting that the trenching function is equally impressive, allowing me to create defined trenches for irrigation or landscape projects.

    Ease of Use:
One of the standout features of the WG896 is its user-friendly design. Assembly was a breeze, requiring minimal effort and no additional tools. The adjustable handle height caters to users of different heights, ensuring a comfortable operating position. The edger’s lightweight nature makes it easy to maneuver around tight corners and along uneven terrain. Furthermore, the blade depth adjustment mechanism is straightforward and enables precise control over the cutting depth.

    Versatility:
The WORX WG896 truly shines when it comes to its versatility. It serves as both a lawn edger and a trencher, eliminating the need for separate tools. The quick-release lever allows for seamless conversion between the two functions, saving time and effort. Whether you need to create well-defined edges along your driveway or dig trenches for cables or landscape lighting, this tool has you covered. The ability to tackle multiple tasks with a single device makes it an excellent investment for homeowners.

    Safety Features:
WORX has taken safety seriously with the WG896. The built-in blade guard provides reliable protection, preventing accidental contact with the sharp blade. Additionally, the unit incorporates a two-hand operation system, ensuring that both hands are engaged during operation for added safety. These features offer peace of mind while working with this powerful tool.

    Maintenance and Durability:
Maintaining the WG896 is hassle-free. The blade can be easily removed for cleaning and sharpening, ensuring consistent performance over time. The overall build quality instills confidence in the tool’s durability. However, it is worth mentioning that regular cleaning and lubrication are essential to prevent clogging and ensure smooth operation.

    Noise and Vibration:
One drawback I noticed with the WG896 is its noise level. As with most electric-powered tools, it produces a fair amount of noise during operation. Although not excessive, it may be a consideration for those who have noise restrictions in their area. Additionally, some minor vibrations can be felt while using the tool, but they are not significant enough to cause discomfort or impact performance.

    Price and Value for Money:
Considering the performance and versatility offered by the WG896, it provides excellent value for the price. While it may be slightly higher priced than some competitors, its durability and reliability make it a worthwhile investment. With this tool, you get the benefits of both a high-quality lawn edger and a trencher, saving money and storage space in the long run.

    Conclusion:
In conclusion, the WORX WG896 12 Amp 7.5″ Electric Lawn Edger & Trencher has proven to be a powerful and versatile tool that exceeded my expectations. Its sturdy construction, powerful performance, ease of use, and dual functionality make it an excellent choice for homeowners looking to achieve clean and professional-looking lawn edges and trenches. With minor considerations regarding noise and vibration, the WG896 is a reliable companion for maintaining a well-groomed lawn. I highly recommend this product to anyone seeking a reliable and efficient lawn edger and trencher.

I bought this as a refurb, and it set me back a mere $85 and tax, and by smell and appearance of all parts it hadn’t even been used before. Might be worth a try for you too.

This has plenty of power and never flinched at the fairly thick patches of grass growing over my edges. It even did well on the edge on the gutter curb, with the unit tilted at about a 30-degree angle or so, and it never tried to tip over or slide downwards sideways. One caveat I’m not crazy about: it’s impossible to see where the blade is because of the guard, so starting a line blind (because of the aforementioned thick overgrowth) is going to result in some touch-and-go, with the blade possibly bouncing in protest at hitting solid sidewalk. I know there’s a white line, but it’s still tricky. It happens with other edgers, but is more of a thing with this due to the obscured vision. Because of this, it will be slower going than using a gas-powered edger, which I am very practiced with before getting this unit. I suspect now that I have clean lines this will be a bit less of an issue going forward, and it isn’t a dealbreaker, but is worth mentioning. Another minor nitpick: If you get to the edge and are accustomed to lifting a gas edger up and away from the edge, you may struggle a bit with this as the unit is pretty heavy in comparison, and it’s probably not the best idea to rely on this unit’s albeit durable handle to do such cowboy stuff. Again, these are to be expected and do not really detract much from its efficacy as an edger.

That all said, the fact that it is powered by cord and is very powerful means it will be perhaps more reliable than a gas powered unit overall. Third-party blades can be picked up very cheaply in bulk, too. I would definitely recommend this edger.

I’ve used the edger a couple of times and the trencher not at all (and might not ever use it).I’ve been edging driveways and curbs for 50 years, first with a hoe, then with a specialized edging tool powered by my muscle, and for the past 15 years with a weed eater. I hated all of the previous methods. Edging was hard work, time-consuming, sweaty, and messy. The weed eater took a lot of the strain away, but it was hard to get straight lines and it was very messy. The Worx edger, by contrast, is wonderful. A job that used to take an hour now can be done in 15 minutes, with straight lines and a minimum of mess. The machine seems to be sturdy. With an electric motor, it needs practically no maintenance other than keeping the machine clean. I can’t comment on durability—I’ve only had it a month—but I’m confident I’ll get many seasons of use out of it. I bought it on sale, so I consider this a $100 well spent.
