Tough to find a vendor’s rack that will work on a Acura RDX. This one supposedly works on many model vehicles. I’ve used it twice with 1 trip about 30 miles and had no issues. Trying to follow the instructions that came with it were a joke and impossible to follow. I watched a You Tube video on the setup and it made perfect sense and now it’s quick and simple. Certainly cheaper than installing a trailer hitch, then buying the carrier. I also purchased the ‘security’ strap and knowing what I know now, I could have made a more secure system for the same amount of money.

I have really nice Yakima rails for the roof of my car and standup racks for my bikes which i use for long trips. Problem is, it’s getting HARDER for me to get them up there all the time! So I like to do some rides locally – like 15 minutes from my house – and it is just too much of a pain to put them on and off the top all the time. So, thought i would give one of these a try knowing that I have not been a big fan of the strap on “clam shell” racks in the past. Too wobbly and unstable and I hate looking in the mirror and seeing the bikes flopping around going down the highway. Anyway, forget that, this one is super nice. Just used it today for the first time. After the initial fitting and figuring out the geometry for my car, that’s important so read the instructions, it basically straps on in about two minutes and is super secure. Really for $100 bucks this thing is a great value and probably would hold up for a long trip too.

The good first. It’s very sturdy and it mounts on the trunk of my 2012 Camry very easily and quickly. I just returned from a 1400 mile trip with 2 bikes on this rack. I was never concerned about stability.
That said, like other reviewers I found it difficult to get 2 bikes to fit. One road bike and one mountain bike. I had to really be patient to find the right configuration.
I do not like the rubber straps that secure the bike in their cradles. They are very difficult to secure and just about impossible with sweaty hands after a ride. I don’t believe my wife will be able to do it on her own and that is a bad thing since I bought this for her to easily transport her bike.
The cradles slip too easily on the posts. At highway speeds the bikes were pushed to the far end of the posts. This increases the stress on the rack as the weight is further out. Well placed bungee cords helped, but did not totally alleviate this issue.
If you are buying this rack for transporting your bike short distances it will probably be fine. But it has enough issues for longer trips and 2 bikes for me to think of looking for something else.

I bought this based on the fact that it was only one of two that said it was compatible with my vehicle. I am thankful to Ms. Bloom for her review. The bike rack works great and once you figure out how to set it up, it doesn’t take to long. Definitely refer to the setup manual an make sure the straps go in the right direction. When comparing this rack to other trunk ones I see, it appears to be one of the nicest it terms of build quality. Purchase the item in the link below if you have a hatchback style glass trunk top like mine. Check Yakima’s website for compatibility.

Good option if you can’t afford / don’t want to go through the hassle of getting a hitch rack or a roof rack. Compact design, folds and fits away easily in the trunk, and to set it up or take it off the car only takes a matter of minutes.

I recently purchased a Yakima Hangout 2 bike rack for my son’s Hyundai Kona. When installing it on the car I installed it under the license plate which cut the foam pads on the lower frame. When I called customer support they said they do not have any options to replace these pads. Without these pads they rack is completely useless. It seems as though these pads would wear and should have an option to replace. The only choice I was really given was to replace the rack. I will never buy a Yakima product again if there engineering is so flawed.

When I found out what a hassle it was going to be to install a trailer hitch bike rack on my 2014 Tesla Model S, I started looking for alternative trunk mount type mounts. I found one site that had tested this mount on a Tesla S and found it worked. So I decided to give it a try, while the instructions for mounting did work, I found that it worked better to swap the bottom tension straps with smaller hooks for the top straps. I snaked the free ends through the rear hatch opening and connected the small hooks to the rear seat baby seat moorings and bingo, a perfect hold for the rack without putting any strain on the window. I’ve driven my bike all over town with no problems.
