Drive is perfect, works great, and I LOVE the rubber eject button. It’s nice to have a working DVD burner after months. The old one was damaged when a power supply popped on me and took the DVD burner in it, plus the motherboard with it. The computer after repair was never really right after. So I just took the CPU out (Core i7 3770) and the 16GB of DDR3 RAM out and built a new one. Went a few months without an optical drive. Also I LOVE the rubber eject button!!!! (again)
I must say the only thing is that the burner’s box, not the shipping box was damaged. The drive inside was not touched though.

Durable, fast, and gets the job done.

I had seen this touted as being especially good for reading damaged (scratched) discs. After trying it out on a CD that I was having trouble with, I have to say that the LG GGC-H20L that I bought 7-8 years ago was much faster and more capable of reading the disc.
Also, this Samsung SH-224DB caches data when reading CD audio, which is not desirable for accurate reading.
So, if what you need is a basic cheap DVD reader and writer, I guess this will work for you. But I was disappointed in its capabilities for reading CD audio discs.
Also, there’s a tinkling noise (like sand inside) when the drive is tilted. What’s up with that?

I was updating my 6 year old build and decided in the process that I ditch an old “Lite On” cd drive that was slow and un responsive sometimes that the motherboard wouldn’t recognized that it was connected nor powered up. the prices between the inexpensive bread and butter Lite On and this Samsung is not a whole lot. Was an easy install and it came with its own cd that included drivers that were supported by Nero if I’m not mistaken. I’m not a stranger to Nero software and have used it with various builds I’ve done for relatives and friends throughout the years. Some dvd cd drivers do not include the software, this one did which is a big PLUS.

I purchased this Samsung SH-224 from Amazon January 2015 (14 months ago). I used it occasionally (an hour or two weekly?) during that time. Drive failed May 12, 2016 for unknown reason. Worked fine while it did, failed totally overnight. I don’t know what the expected life for a DVD drive is, so cannot comment on this being a poor/average/good drive. Interestingly, the cost has gone up $1.00 in that time.

Nothing special, but gets the job done and no issues in my DIY AMD build

Bought this DVD drive for two reasons. One, my old one was starting to read only disks that it wanted to, and two, I was building a new computer. Bought this back in July 2014, and it still runs great today. It can read and write DVDs and CDs. I ordered an OEM unit, and received a retail unit. It came in a retail box with the drive, a SATA cable, documentation, and a software disk. I didn`t ask for a retail package, but it didn`t cost extra, so I guess I can`t complain. I would recommend this to anyone who is building a computer, or has an old drive that is failing. It was so good, I will be buying another for another project I`m working on.

This drive worked great for 36 days, then failed.
It caused me to trash 10 DL DVD Blanks.
Could not return it (30 days)
Went to Samsung for Warranty and could not find the model number.
Buyers beware
