Nothing is perfect but this box is close. I sift the litter every day. The way it’s made enables me to wipe one container with 409 before I drop the sifting box in it. This lets the 409 residue dry for 24 hours before the cats are exposed to it. So you pour the used contents into the sifter, wipe the empty and then drop the sifter into the one you just wiped. Boxes stay very clean. If you have any odor at all, you are just not doing it right. One of my male cat pees high so cleaning is necessary.
I use one 22 lb box of un scented clumping Fresh Step litter for each box per month. Then, as I sift the used litter, I add a bit of litter from another new box. We have 3 cats and that means we buy 4 boxes a month. 3 fill the litter boxes and the 4th is used to replenish the litter that’s lost from sifting. 4 boxes of litter lasts a month and the litter is very clean throughout the month.
I’m 70 so I have a few things I do to help me deal with the heavy boxes. First, they are on an 8” tall platform. That keeps me from bending so deep. The platform is carpeted and there are strategically placed rugs on the floor. After sifting the litter, I vacuum the rugs with a Dyson cordless. The room stays very clean as do the boxes. Cats deserve a clean litter box. Anything less than daily sifting is like not flushing your toilet when you use it every time.
The cats sort out who uses which box. I’ve read that you need a box for each cat plus one. I don’t use an extra box but I think it’s fine because they get sifted daily. We never have odor, not ever, not one bit. But that depends on daily maintenance.
I said these boxes are not perfect. I’d love to see slightly thicker plastic. The 3 parts of the box can break on the rim after a year or so so I keep a spare box for replacement parts in the garage. But the price is reasonable so I don’t really mind that. The other issue is that the boxes are a bit heavy, 22 lbs each and at 70, my days of being able to manage are numbered. I’ll switch to a litter robot eventually. There are some bad reviews on those but I suspect that’s because people don’t change the litter as often as they should.
Overall, the VanNess system is about as well built and efficient as a litter box system can be. I want to emphasize that with about 5 minute of work each day, every day, thes boxes never smell. They are clean for the cats and with some cheap Amazon rugs, the floor stays litter free.

I recently purchased the Van Ness Pets Odor Control Large Enclosed Sifting Litter Box, and overall, I’m quite satisfied with its performance. The design is sleek and the odor control feature works exceptionally well, keeping my home smelling fresh. The sifting mechanism is a game-changer, making the process of cleaning the litter box quick and efficient.
One thing to note, however, is that the size is a bit smaller than I expected for a “large” litter box. If you have a larger cat or multiple cats, you might find it a tad cramped. Despite this, my cat seems to be comfortable using it, and the benefits far outweigh this minor drawback.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for an effective and convenient litter box with excellent odor control, the Van Ness Pets Large Enclosed Sifting Litter Box is a great choice. Just keep in mind the actual size when making your purchase.

I’ve been having trouble with litter not wanting to clump lately (not sure if it’s a quality control issue or too much humidity!), and I think the sifting litterbox would have worked better if the litter was clumping better. Still, the design isn’t quite right – since the litter can go through the sifter, when you pull the sifter out, it breaks the clumps in half, so half sit on the bottom of the pan and half are sifted out. It ends up being extremely messy to clean, since litter goes everywhere as the clumps break apart. Otherwise, this is a great litterbox – great price, great quality material, it fits well in the space but with enough room for the cats – I’ll probably just use it as a regular litterbox and remove the sifter though.

I like that this product for it’s good quality and it has the features it says it has. However, I’ve been using this for a week now and unfortunately, the holes in the sifter is way too big. A lot of fresh littler is sifting through when they shouldn’t. Today I went to the hardware store to buy a garden mesh(spent another extra $10) to cover the bottom of the sifter in order to stop the wastage. If they can product to have a small sifting holes, I would’ve given 5/5. But now I have to do a workaround to save the already ‘not cheap’ litter box.

We’ve have used this one for over 10 years.
The Sifter feature is awesome. No need scooping the poo💩 if you don’t want to. It’s great if you only have 1 or 2 smaller cats. If you have 2 or 3 medium sized cats or larger cats you should get 2 of these cat Litter things.. or you could get a couple of the bigger modeled ones. (Are 3 cats got to big so we got the bigger models now). They work great too!!! And we are using this smaller one for the poo💩 & the pee sifting now, only.
Easy to use.
It is best (IMO) to leave the sifter tray between the litter tray’s instead of directly in the litter box with the cat litter if you don’t clean your litter boxes often.. it will clog up.
(which is absolutely GROSS) then you will have to scoop & will complain here about this not working right.
1. Put sifter in the clean tray.
2. Pour all the dirty litter from the dirty tray into sifter.
(Be careful as dirty tray may be heavy)
3. Holding sifter tray with both hands from both sides of sifting tray, Lift sifter tray slowly upwards over clean tray. And all the good cat littter falls down into it.
4. The sifter tray will hold all the crap💩 and clumps of pee.
Throw out the clumps of poo💩 & clumps of pee in a trash can or a trash bag. (Or wherever/whatever floats your boat)
5. Rinse off both dirty sifter and dirty tray.
6. Add a little more fresh litter to cleaned out tray. (We never fill our tray more than half way with litter)
7. Put clean litter tray on top of rinsed off tray with sifter in between both trays.
8. Put everything back where you usually have your litter box. (Be careful, litter box may be heavy, so use both hands)
9. Sweep, mop, vacuum & wipe down whatever else if anything.
10. Wash your hands if you didn’t wear gloves.
11. Done.
We repeat this every 3-4 days.
Takes about 10-15-20 minutes.
These are not the strongest of plastic so take your time & be careful when lifting with litter in the trays. We always use both hands lifting the unit from both sides. Keep clean & Don’t ever over fill & it should be easy peasy.
The latches are very delicate. They work but could easily break off if your not careful.
The door doesn’t keep all of the flakes of the cat litter box from fallen out of the box on the floor. But it does help minimize that.
We put a 14”x 11” food tray in front of the door so it falls out on that. Then we just throw it back in the litter tray. Not a big deal.
Or just sweep it up or vacuum it up. Not a big deal unless you just leave it there to build up into a big mess.
I highly recommend both this model for 1 cat owner’s & multiple small cat owners.
And the larger model (for a lot of cats or larger cat owners).
Cost effective & affordable compared to other litter boxes that cost $50 or more just for a bottom tray. If something breaks use your warranty. We never had to with this model.
We recently got the 2 larger modeled ones now for about $50 plus tax and they should last as long as this small one has. 10 years and still going.
You could still scoop out the poop💩 & pee if you want to, if you have the time to &/or just like playing with cat 🐱 pee & poo💩
I don’t.
Disregard the negative reviews here.
These people complaining here either don’t understand the sifting concept, received a defective one, impatient &/or are not happy people &/or not happy cat owners.

It seemed like a cool idea to keep it clean and I liked that there was an extra layer. But what eventually happens is that it becomes dirtier and smellier faster. The litter seeps through the holes meant for filtering, and once that gets wet with cat pee it just stays that way unless you clean out the whole thing. And that’s just a whole lot of work.
Also the build quality is not great. Flimsy plastic parts

I am actually very impressed with this litter box. It’s sturdy and easy to use, large enough that it contains the mess. I am actually using this to replace my existing box because this one is so much nicer.
