Updated to version 7.5, previously had version 6. Fabulous software to create Guitar TABS and more. Totally love it. I’ve recommended this to all my guitar students!

First, after installation, it wouldn’t play any sounds. So I contacted their support. I should have been worried when I got a response making excuses for why it might take a long time to get a reply.
But I did after a few days. However, there answer was to install the sounds which I had done already. So I installed them again. Now when I start it and hit play, it crashes. That’s even less useful.Clearly, this is not a well tested product. Maybe it works great under the right circumstances, but that’s not mine. I’m returning it.

I like this program. Easy to edit, it’s easily replaced handwritten scores for the band.

I already owned Guitar Pro 6, so I got the download version of Guitar Pro 7 directly from Arobas Music (I also bought the install DVD, which came later). The software is a definite improvement over GP6, but it comes with a hefty learning curve. It was easier for me, since I was already familiar with GP6, allowing me to quickly pick up on where to go to make any adjustments or modifications to the virtual instruments. However, someone new to the Guitar Pro environment should be ready to devote a few days or even weeks to figure out most of the tools available to you.
Most of the instruments already have pre-assigned peripherals, but if you want to get the instrument to sound exactly like one you heard on a recording, be prepared to do a lot of experimenting to get it perfect. Also, each restart of Guitar Pro changes the sound slightly (or maybe your ears are hearing things a bit differently today), so you might end up doing a bit of tweaking to the track’s sound.
As the name implies, most of the effort by the developers has gone into the guitars. You can get just about any sound you want, from bluesy acoustic folk to headbanging distorted metal. All the tools are there for you to manipulate the sound into what you want from your virtual guitar. Guitar Pro 7 even allows you to use a real guitar as a MIDI controller, so you can input your own personal style directly into the track. I don’t use this feature, so you’ll need to experiment with this on your own and see how well it works for you.
Guitar Pro 7 also finally made available some of the guitar sounds that were only available as MIDI files in earlier versions. These include pick scratching and hand noise across strings, and a couple of flamenco percussion sounds one can do with an acoustic or classical guitar.
You can also tune your real guitar, using the tuning function, by plugging your guitar into the software, the same way you’d set up your axe as a MIDI controller. As of GP 7.5, you can just strum all the strings at once and the software will tell you which strings need tuning. It’s a very nice feature for those who don’t want to have to also clip a separate tuner on their guitar at the same time. Again, this is a feature I don’t use, so your mileage may vary.
By changing the tempo of the music, you can speed up or slow down how fast the score plays, while staying in the key that the score is written in. You can highlight a few notes to a few measures, so the playback only performs those notes. You can choose to play one or more instruments on their own, or you can mute the ones you don’t want to hear at the moment.
The other musical instruments provided tend to get less and less realistic in sound as one moves away from the standard rock band. The least pleasing to the ear are the saxophones, which require a lot of fine adjustments to get them to sound even remotely realistic. Orchestral strings are much improved over the ones in Guitar Pro 6, so that was a big help. Most of the woodwinds are okay, but be prepared to occasionally intervene if they sound a bit strange. Version 7.5 did help with a lot of those problems. Brass are okay for the most part, but I’m sad that the Euphonium was left off the list. I instead use the Tuba in its higher range and that sounds okay, but the eupho has always left me with the impression of it being an interesting blend somewhere between a trombone, a french horn, and a tuba. This is just a personal peeve, so please don’t think too deeply about it.
With Guitar Pro 7, you can include both Real Sound Engine and MIDI instrument tracks into the same score. The MIDI part covers an interesting collection of sounds and instruments, but you can’t tweak them very much. Adding virtual foot pedals isn’t available for them. The RSE instruments make up the bulk of what you have to work with, and every one of those can be modified quite a bit. For example, you can set up an ensemble of violins to sound like out-of-this-world synth strings.
Drums are fun to work with, and the virtual instrument comes with a guide you can turn on or off to help with assigning the correct notes to the correct parts of the drumkit. Several different kits are available, so you can easily find one that will get the job done for you, or you can even create several tracks, with each one using a different kit so you can focus on one or more parts, as you like. For example, I tend to blend the “Fab” drums with the “Custom” crash cymbals. To me, hey sound like they go together. Mix and match to suit your own taste.
One of the features that I found frustrating is MySongBook. This is a separate function that you can ignore or include as you like, but understand that any score you purchase cannot be saved or permanently modified in any way. Your purchase is for the score only, where you can print the full score or even individual tracks. But you can’t make any changes to the score, like adding more refrains or copying a series of notes as background vocals, or anything like that. There are plenty of tablatures available elsewhere online, and some of them are even set up so you can open them in Guitar Pro 7 and modify as you please. I’d recommend giving a pass on MySongBook, unless all you want to do with Guitar Pro is use it as a tool to help you practice playing an instrument.
Support for Guitar Pro 7 is more than willing to help you with any problems you might have. Be prepared to give them detailed information about what you were doing when things went wrong, so they can investigate and hopefully find a solution for you. I’ve rarely had them throw up their hands in defeat–instead, they try to figure out a way to fix your problem and get you going again, even if it takes a rewrite of the entire program to do that. Guitar Pro 7 had a few issues that I found, and I’m certain a lot of other folks stumbled across those problems too. Arobas techs worked with me to solve those problems, and even asked me to help test their now-live version 7.5, which helped resolve quite a few of the bugs I had run into.
In summary: Guitar Pro 7 is affordable software that allows one to write music, play along with scores, or even recreate your own virtual band and save the results to several different formats, so you can perform “live” with just your instrument and the recording of everything else. You can use Guitar Pro 7 to do whatever you need done, at a fraction of the cost of most of the DAWs or music writing software out there. Learning how to use Guitar Pro 7 is a steep learning curve, but once you’re more comfortable with it, you can accomplish a lot without having to spend a fortune for all sorts of equipment, both real and virtual. I took one star off because of my annoyance with MySongBook, but beyond that, Guitar Pro is a great tool that will keep you occupied, but at the end of each session with it, you’ll feel like you accomplished quite a lot.

A must have for every guitar player. If you do not already own a copy then buy one. It is somewhat pricey, but worth it.

I purchased this product and was excited to begin scoring a melody. After a full hour I still could not figure out how to enter a simple note on the staff without having to go through the Tab function. I watched the tutorial and it was uninformative as it only showed how to enter a note using the tab. I wonder if anyone who actually plays guitar has ever used this software. there are multiple ways to finger a note and having to choose a specific fingering simply to enter a note is lunacy. I am requesting a refund but have yet to hear back. UPDATE: I added 1 star because I received speedy satisfactory support .

Having enjoyed Guitar Pro 6 since it came out on the market, I was anxious to try Guitar Pro 7 and this software did not disappoint! More User-friendly & less intimidating than the previous version, it offers a view of a fretboard and displys the fingerings used in each particular song, which is invaluable for those who do not read music. There is a helpful User Guide in the software, and tutorials are offered on youtube if one still has difficulty. Great job, developers – and thanks for making this affordable to those of us who have limited funds!

If this software existed 20 years ago (in its current iteration) I’m not sure I wouldn’t have been a famous songwriter by now. There are some weird quirks, but honestly, they’re all easily overcome and ultimately, the software is easy to use and very powerful.

I’ve used a cracked version of this tool before, so had known of its benefits back then, but my realisation of a likely miss on the range of future features a legit copy would bring, got me to spend on it with no regrets since; the product delivered has a verifiable Arobas staff reference, who in my experience are more than willing to clear queries or confusions should there be any.. All in all a great solution to skill up… HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
