If you can’t afford a french horn and don’t need more trumpets in band, this is a great alternative, especially when this can be used outside. I prefer the adapter for the horn mouthpiece so it can sound more like a horn, but I prefer holton mouthpieces, not the one provided. The intonation is a little flat due to the adapter, but the kids learn to adjust. I move kids to horn their second year.

LOVE this horn! There were some cosmetic flaws on it though – would be surprised if it came brand new from the assembly line, though…

I got it out of the case, first off the bell came bent which was already a bad sign, but i started playing it, and yes it would be a good beginner instrument but you can’t go high on it or low, the horn doesn’t have a good tone to it, i’ve been playing french horn for a long time now, and the mellophone had terrible tone, i wouldn’t recommend if you are in high school, middle school players probably.

My son is a French horn player who started playing mellophone with the school pep band this year. Since the school only had a loaner that my son had to carry home each day on the bus, we decided to get a lower cost mellophone to keep at home. This one has a nice tone and great intonation anywhere in the register. We recommend it, it’s a great instrument for the price if you have a beginner.

The instrument is good, but I wasn’t expecting two mouthpieces. Even though the extra mouthpiece for french horn was a nice surprise, I thought I would be getting a mellophone mouthpiece as the mouthpiece promised. Instead I got a trumpet mouthpiece, and because trumpet mouthpieces are a bit longer, and slightly different bore size, I have been having tuning (mostly) and a bit of note troubles.

Case seems to be of decent, it will protect the instrument from normal bumps or small drops. The instrument itself looks very clean and well taken care of. However, there is a bend on top of the bell and this alone was enough for me to return it. The quality of the case leads me to believe that the bend was there before leaving the seller. The mouthpieces look to be of good quality, but I can’t comment on the quality of the sound as I only played a simple scale before realizing the bend and putting it back in the box. Overall I would say that if you are looking for a Mellophone for High School Marching Band this is a good purchase, but if you are like me and buying it to continue an old hobbie I would look somewhere else.
