I’ve installed 6-8 of these in 1990’s era cars and truck, mostly GM. I’ve also used them to replace factory RKE modules when the OEM fobs broke or quit and replacements aren’t available or cost hundreds for used.
You have to be comfortable with wiring work, know what the wire colors are and where to access them in the car you’re working on. The instructions are for professional installers (all DEI gear is intended for professional installation), so they describe what the 18 wires are, but they don’t elaborate on how to wire it to a particular car. Integrating the lock / unlock functions into the car’s wiring can be frustrating and time consuming if you aren’t familiar with automotive wiring and various lock circuits. There’s a bunch of them.
Once you get it installed and working, it will last for years. Even fob battery life is measured in years. DEI is good stuff. But the installer’s skill and attention to detail makes or breaks the reliability of the system. If you don’t know what you’re doing, let someone that does do the install.

This is awesome!
I have a Ford Ranger which doesn’t have power windows/locks…etc. Many years I have been unlocking the truck with the key and it can be a total PITA if it’s raining or one has their hands full. I can deal with manual windows, but keyless entry is almost a must. I found two door actuators in my “stuff” pile and decided I had enough and wanted to tackle putting in a keyless entry. There are MANY sites/forums that help you with wiring. So please don’t let the bunch of wires scare you. For the cost of this unit it was a no brainer to do in my opinion. This is not hard to install.. It will probably take you longer to take apart your vehicle and mount the acutators, run the wires, solder everything and then test…etc..
I wanted to use the progressive unlock feature. This means, I push the unlock button once, and it will unlock my driver’s side door. Push the button again within 15 seconds and it will unlock my passenger side door. Since I have a truck and I drive it 99% of the time, I didn’t want the passenger side to unlock everytime.
This is how to wire it up accordingly: NOTE. You will need another relay to operate the second door actuator (passenger side)
[B+ is the POSITIVE 12v source from the battery]
H1/9 violet UNLOCK 87 = B+ Hot at all times (fused)
H1/7 violet/blk LOCK 87 = B+ Hot at all times (fused)
Hq1/17 brown/blk UNLOCK 87a = GROUND
H1/6 wht/blk LOCK 87a = GROUND
H1/8 blue/blk UNLOCK 30 = DRIVER actuator UNLOCK wire
H1/5 grn/blk LOCK 30 = BOTH actuators LOCK wire(s)
(obviously you will need the 12v constant,ignition, and ground, not depicted in the above diagram, as it’s self explanatory via the manual)
Now you need a relay for the PASSENGER UNLOCK (2nd unlock)
30 = PASSENGER actuator UNLOCK wire
87a = GROUND
87 and 86 = B+ Hot at all times (fused)
85 = 2101 H1/2 blue 2nd unlock wire.
Hope the above helps as I searched a LOT for the progressive unlock feature and not a lot was coming up.
I also ordered a small buzzer so now when I press unlock/lock it sounds of a chirp instead of the horn beeping. I found the horn beeping to be very annoying especially if you are getting into your car often or it’s late at night.
For the total cost of under $40 and I now have keyless entry on my truck I couldn’t be happier! Mind you it might be a little more expensive depending on your door actuators and if you need to purchase, wire, relays..etc But if you are tackling this type of project you MOST likely already have the necessary items and supplies to complete the install.
In summary:
All I wanted was a way to unlock/lock my truck remotely. Avital is a quality brand! Great price. I now have progressive door locks. The unit chirps just as an OEM system would, and my parking lights flash just like OEM. The unit has many options including unlock when you shut the vehicle off (3 seconds) and lock when you turn the vehicle on (3 seconds). I’m ecstatic that I did this and even happier at the convenience of not fumbling with a key anymore.

Had to get this with the 451M relay for my five wire locks. The hardest thing was figuring out where the red wire goes on the 451M which is actually to the red wire going towards the door switch and then for some reason my unlock/lock was backwards so I swapped the green wire/blue wire and all Is well except my door switches no longer functions which is fine with me. Hope this helps someone who was struggling.

This device is really very sophisticated and appears to be of good quality. It has significant capabilities such as controlling the horn, interior lights, exterior lights, trunk release (with purchase of a trunk release actuator), etc. I only needed the door lock and unlock functions so I did not hook up all the options that are available. The reason I did not rate it much higher is that the installation instructions were very inadequate for a novice installer and unless one has significant knowledge of electrical circuits and vehicle wiring, it would be nearly impossible for someone to install this and make it work. The instructions said that it needs to be installed by a certified installer in order for the warranty to be honored so that might explain the inadequate instructions that came with the unit. Having said that, the unit works very well for what I needed, and so far I’m very satisfied with the function and quality of the unit. I just think the manufacturer needs to make the instructions much more detailed for the average person to be able to install this properly. One other thing that will be necessary is a detailed wiring diagram for the particular vehicle the unit is being installed in because every vehicle manufacturer does things differently in the way they construct their vehicles and without a wiring diagram, it is necessary to
‘wring out” the wiring to determine the correct connections and I don’t think most people have that skill.

I installed this keyless entry on my 2003 F250 after seeing a YT video online for this truck. The guy showed the whole install that took 20 min. It was nice because he shows everything you need to do with wire colors in real time. I highly recommend 2101L Avital unit, it works great and is easy to install

Works great! The big bonus with this versus a Chinese no name brand, you stand a better chance of being able to buy remotes in the future.
