Two things wrong, right off: Any trombone mouthpiece listed here as “long shank” should read “large shank,” and a 6 1/2 AL is NOT a bass trombone mouthpiece, it is a tenor trombone mouthpiece available in small shank or large shank.
What’s right? This is the best version of the most popular all-around trombone mouthpiece, better and substantially less expensive than the name brand Vincent Bach 3416HAL 61/2AL Large Shank Trombone Mouthpiece, 6 1/2AL]].
The story goes that the man who later founded the Faxx brand helped Vincent Bach move his operation from Mt Vernon, NY, to Elkhart, IN, back in the mid-60s when Selmer bought the Bach company. In appreciation for the help, Vincent Bach gave the man a set of original Mt Vernon mouthpieces and the Faxx brand was born as state-of-the art digitally accurate copies of those mouthpieces to the original Mt Vernon specs, unlike the present-day Bach mouthpieces, which have changed significantly, and not for the better.
The difference? Mostly, today’s Bach 6 1/2 features too rounded a rim – the Faxx with it’s better balance of round and flat gives superior results for absolutely every student on which I have compared the two mouthpieces. Also, the Bach 6 1/2 AL large shank appears to be simply a small shank 6 1/2 mouthpiece with another layer fused on the outside of the shank – like using a small-to-large shank adapter all of the time. One prominent professional on the web has, for years, recommended having the end of the Bach 6 1/2 AL shank bored out a bit (adding expense, of course) for better results. The Faxx large shank 6 1/2 already has a very nice taper to a thinner end – probably just what this pro has in mind.
The downside of Faxx brands is that they are available only in the most popular sizes. For trombone, that means (listed from smallest to largest rim) for small shank: 12C, 7C, 6 1/2 AL; for large shank: 6 1/2 AL, 5G, 4G, 1 1/2 G. (Only the last is a real bass trombone size, although are probably a few tenor-to-bass doublers around making do with a 4G on bass.)
I was concerned when I heard that the Faxx founder passed away a few years ago and the company was sold, but all the Faxx mouthpieces that I have seen since then, so far, have kept up the high standard.
Highly recommended by a professional trombonist and private teacher for 40 years.

I will tell you a true story – I had a high school trombone student playing a small shank Faxx 6.5 on his student-line trombone. He lost a brother in a car accident, which affected him greatly, and he quit taking lessons for a year and a half. During that time he bought a new, large bore Bach 42B, which came with a Bach 6.5 mouthpiece. When he came back for lessons, he brought both of those horns, because he had a very difficult time trying to play the larger trombone with the Bach mouthpiece but could play the little horn with the Faxx 6.5 easily. I reached to my shelf to get a new large-shank Faxx 6.5 I had in my stock, and he could play the big horn just fine! I was even more sold on the Faxx brand than ever!

Great mouthpiece for my Olds O-25 largebore tenor. Plays perfectly, not too bright. this is actually a copy of a large shank 6 1/2 A, which has the more open backbore than the AL, which is opposite of the Bach small shank versions
