Had a fender music master when I was 17 that I regretted selling. This is similar, good value. Re jigged the bridge lowered the action and tuned it up, surprisingly great tones and range , easy and fun to play. Just wish they had finished the neck with varnish. Really happy with this bass, it’s tones and value for money.

Someone I know had a Fender Musicmaster, the 60s/70s version of what this Squier Bronco is, and I fell in love with the size and short scale. At 150 bucks, this is a steal. I’m an experienced player, and generally pretty picky with instruments. When it comes to fit, finish, and playability, this holds its own with basses costing four to five times as much. Fret ends are good, no sharp bits. I haven’t found any fret buzz on mine. I suspect the seller did a proper set up on this. If they didn’t, and it came from the factory like this, then WOW! The pickup is good, a bit less booming than something with a humbucker, but you will get a nice sound when you dial in your amp. Yes, it is a pickup usually put in guitars, but it’s not a bad sound. Ignoring price, and being super picky, my only real gripe is that the bridge is only two saddles, but teles were made like this for years. Just an older way of doing things. The fact that you can buy this quality of instrument for the price it is blows me away. In the world of 30 inch scale basses, I dare to say this is your best bet. Even if you’re not looking for a budget instrument, this is worth a look before spending more money.

I bought this just because it looks cool, and I prefer a short scale bass. I didn’t expect much from the tiny single-coil (guitar) pickup, but I’m actually impressed. It doesn’t sound thin or small, like I expected, and it’s remarkably versatile. It’s very low output, so it needs a good amplifier, but it’s very clean and clear, so it works great with overdrive or effects. The sound is similar to a P-bass. The neck is unvarnished and smooth. The truss rod wasn’t screwed into its socket; it was there, but it spun freely until I tightened it in. On the upside, the neck was straight so it didn’t need to be tight. Otherwise the build quality is very good. It’s free of visible defects, and holds a tune. The tone/volume knobs work well, without noise or slop. Tuning machines are solid and allow for fine adjustments. Even the strings that came on it are decent, to start with anyway. Intonation can be a bit of a pain with the two-saddle bridge, but I was able to get it spot on. In a short time it’s become my favorite everyday bass. I keep it around to play with all the time, and it lets me keep my more expensive/rare bass tucked away safely.

Since this page is for the Squier line of basses and not just one in particular, I’ll mention that I purchased the Squier Affinity PJ Bass. This is the second bass I’ve owned, the first being an Ibanez from the early 90’s or so. Having owned this bass for over a month, I can confidently review this product now. It’s pretty apparent that build quality for budget instruments is on point right now, and Squier is easily one of the best budget brands.
Firstly, if you’re considering this bass, it’s not ready to play out of the box. If you’re trying to play something right when you get it, you’ll probably want to buy in person, as it will most likely be set up. That being said, included in the box are tools required for adjustments on the truss rod, and bridge saddles. A search online can help with setup, or you can take it to a shop if you’re not comfortable with it.
With all that out of the way, this bass is awesome. I purchased the Olympic White color, and I think it looks pretty sick. I purchased this bass to experiment with different tones, the p-bass pickup has a nice softer more mellow tone and the jazz style pickup has a more warm twangy tone that pairs well with a rock/metal style. I’m not going to sugar coat it and say this is the best of both worlds, because it’s really not; each pickup does its job well separately, and experimenting with both pickups together will give you a bit more unique tone. The knobs work will to give fine adjustments to volume of each pickup, and the tone knob does the job as well. From my time with this bass, it’s been able to stay in tune relatively well, even dropping to D Standard tuning. The included strings felt great to me, and I enjoyed the sound out of them. The fret edges were rounded enough on mine to not cause any irritation on my fretting hand. It might be an unpopular opinion, but the raw finish on the neck is something I absolutely love, and I never want to go back to a gloss neck.

This is a short scale bass not just for adult beginners or small kids, I am a guitar player with big hands and was looking for a bass that would be a good transition from guitar…This fit the bill perfect. The neck and frets were good out of box.. With just a small adjustment on relief…The intonation was off on the big strings but even with the 2 saddle bridge it went easy…Just loosen strings to adjust back with screw driver… The pickup is a strat guitar style but sounded good to my ears… The quality is good for $200, I did want to spend a bunch on a bass , are you going gig at a arena with this prolly not… I just wanted something to have around if a bass playing friend comes by, and this works for me….The vendor “geartree” was quick to ship my order out , very happy with the service.. There are basses on the market a little more or little less but most are long scale, this bass worked good for me out of the box , yes you could spend money on upgrades but its not needed, this design is based on a vintage bass, sweet and simple……what more do you need starting out…
