I was struggling to decide on rather I wanted the MIM version of this, being that I was so impressed with my MIM 4 string P Bass.

I am absolutely blown away by the sound of this bass. It is definitely rougher around the edges than the Mexican and American made version, but the output and tone is very much gig and recording usable. And the finish (I got the sunburst) is impressive as well, especially considering what you pay.

*update: I noticed later that the bridge is mounted a little crooked. Not a big deal for me since I know how to fix an issue like this and planned to install a high mass bridge anyway. But this might be a problem for others, so I figured it was worth mentioning.

String spacing and neck contour is very comfortable. Pickups aren’t bad either. It is lighter than the made in America model. This is a fantastic player bass for the money.

The bass sounds fine and plays fine, but there were two huge issues that made me return it.

    1. Poor craftsmanship
The gap between the body and the neck was huge, and the neck seemed to be done very poorly, with parts of the neck with rough spots.

    2. Biohazard?
There were dark spots on the neck, which was fine, but the truss rod hole had mold or something in it, which was disgusting.

I was probably just unlucky for reason 1 and got a bass from a poorly constructed batch, but the mold or whatever was unacceptable. Since the bass is sold and shipped by Amazon (not directly from Fender), I’m sort of suspecting that Amazon was trying to pass off an old and used product as new? Not really sure though…

This is a nice looking bass for what it cost. Seems to be well made and sounds good through my 500 hundred watt Fender Rumble amp. Just be aware it will need a set up. The string saddles were adjusted all the way up from the factory. There are lots of videos on You Tube showing exactly how to do it with basic tools. I’m happy with it.

    1) Shipping – arrived on time, but could not track via UPS and according to Amazon, the package still has not arrived. Seems like a UPS systems issue.

    2) Scratched – the guitar was scratched in a couple of different locations on the forward facing side of the body (2 scratches near the upper side of the pick guard, and 1 scratch near upper side of the bridge and first pick up). Should be priced for scratch and dent, not full price. I’m not going through the hassle of trying to get another one based on the conditions some have reported as I might just get stuck in a never ending cycle. The item should be discounted by the seller.

    3) Slices Your Hands – the frets are just a tiny bit too long and they slice your hand as you move it up and down the neck. This is a manufacturing quality control issue. I have been playing guitars for 36 years and have never encountered this issue with any other guitar. I had to purchase a $35 fret filing block to correct the issue.

    4) Playability – once the strings get settled in, the bass played really nice for the price.
    5) Tone – Im not crazy about the sound I’m getting, but it is a passive bass. Different strings may help a little. The highs are very bright, but the lows are a little brighter than what I prefer as well. Could upgrade to an active system, or maybe run it through a pre-amp for an additional $40-250.

    5) No protection – the bass does not even come with a gig bag to be clear. So you will need to factor that in to your total cost if you plan to be mobile with it at all. Add another $30-$175 to your price.

    6) Appearance – I went with the Olympic White option. You can upgrade the pick up for $10-100 depending on how custom you want to get. I went with a cheap upgrade.

Overall, I like the bass, but should be paying a discounted price for the scratches and the fret problems, as should anyone else who received a damaged product.

    Bass $299
    (Should be discounted like $50)
    Case $135
    Fret File $35
    Pick guard upgrade – $11
    Total $480

Could possibly buy a used/broken in Fender Player (Made in Mexico) version with a hard case for this total amount. Something to consider.
