So I bought this product from amazon and unfortunately it came broken and I was forced to buy it from a box store. With that said now on to what I have to say about the tank…..This is a great little tank, but it comes with the caveat……I bought this tank with full intentions on upgrading it with new accessories i.e. inTank media basket, Fluval Sea Nano LED light, ATO system, etc. While you can use this tank straight out the box it is much better if you add the accessories mentioned above for growing anything other than softies. If you’re looking for a desktop tank that you aware you need to upgrade later on down the road I would say this is for you.

Update:136 days in, been more of an experimental tank, no fish yet… 2 hermits. Used a dead shrimp to cycle, and feeding the tank pellets every so often to keep the BB thriving. Have had a coraline algae outbreak which is great. No water changes until day 136 when i did a massive water change to prep for adding a fish in a week or two. Coraline growth usually means you are safe to add corals, so if youre worried about the stock light, dont be.
A pretty neat “all in one” setup, but flawed in a few ways. The return pump is way under powered. The common fix for this is swapping in the cobalt mj606 pump, but this is currently unavailable on Amazon and other large retailers… looks to be discontinued. Secondly they have a relief cut a few inches from the bottom to insure the pump can get water, but i find the pump mainly pulls water thru here completely bypassing the media in chamber one. I used superglue and a piece of plastic cup to seal it off, others have used silicone.
Other than that, its a great little setup.

While I did try a saltwater setup for a few weeks, this tank was just a little too small to maintain a stable temp in my household so I recapped it into a freshwater planted tank and have few regrets. The lighting is incredible for red plants such as Ludwigia and really makes for some vibrant coloration and growth rate. My only complaint is that the flow is a bit strong, and I have lost many shrimp/endless to the strong suction of the intake port. Ended up removing the pump, and large filter sponge seems to be keeping nitrites and ammonia near zero after a month without flow. It’s a flawed design but still my favourite tank on the market.

I bought this to set up in my classroom at school as a small reef tank. The light is good enough for some corals, but I upgraded the light for personal preference.
It’s a great all in one, but could use some modifications. The pump is not very strong, so the flow is very low. It needs to be more to be able to grow many corals. Zoas and mushrooms are probably the best for this tank. Mine is a mushroom only tank.
It’s really too small for any fish. Even if it does recommend some. Mostly just snails and hermits could survive in this.
If you are limited on space and just need and want a small tank without fish this is perfect. It has potential to be a good and fun tank, but I would get something bigger than the 5 gallon one if you have the space. A lot more potential.

Pros & Cons –
I absolutely love this tank! I upgraded to this tank from a Marineland Portrait 5g, which had a smaller footprint but more vertical height. The Evo has the same capacity but seems like a much bigger tank than the Portrait. Having a long narrow profile gives my fish a whole lot more room to zip around and be happy. Also there is more floor space to spread out the live rock and create a cool scape.
The stock pump is high quality but opted to use it in the tank to circulate water. I put it opposite the return pump and it creates awesome flow. Even better is it is much less intrusive and noticeable than a powerhead and it was essentially free!
I used an Aquatop Np302 and the tubing from the Portrait as my return pump. The Aquatop is under the media basket sitting on its side (The sponge media holder doesn’t sit all the way down on the shelf but thats not a problem) and the hose snakes under the divider and up to the outlet. This way the big tetra 50w heater I have fits in the return pump compartment with no problem. I originally wanted to get the Aqueon 600 but its a little more pricey than other small pumps and I would’ve had to get a new heater too because that pump and heater combo wouldn’t fit in the back together.
Not a fan of the filtration sponge. I had some leftover aquarium silicon from plugging the two holes in the back and some thin plexiglass and made an in tank basket which was pretty easy but well have to see how well it works. Still waiting for the silicone to cure.
I don’t have any experience with high end lights as I only used the stock light on the Portrait but I’m going to stick with the stock Evo light until I need something more powerful. Its plenty bright and penetrates to the bottom lighting up all the nooks and crannies. I plan on plenty invertebrates and softies only so I may never need to upgrade….. unless I need some programability and swanky effects like the Current USA Orbit Marine Aquarium LED Light, 18.
Nothing to complain about with this tank at all…yet

The tanks is a nice compact narrow tank that provides a good view for a small tank.
Must remove light fixture to clean or replace filter medium. Fine sand particles collect in the small area that houses the pump. Within 2 months the sand was almost at an inch and that caused stress to the pump motor which has became very noisy It was extremely difficult to vacuum the sand out, so I used a simple flexible plastic tube but I would have to shut down the tank and remove the pump to clear all of the sand to ensure it didn’t further damage the motor.
I chose this more expensive small tank from a number of similar tanks selling for less because i wanted to ensure good quality, but I am quite disappointed and I have moved my fish and corals back to their old tank.
It looked so beautiful when I got it set up, but now I am disappointed by it’s poor performance. I wish I could return it, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Of it was the only thing available, you could make it work, but there’s gotta be something better out there for a reasonably similar price.
Pros & Cons –
It is extremely quiet so you can have it in your room while you sleep. The design is so sleek and modern. The pump is a little weak and doesn’t produce a lot of flow. If you are getting corals for this tank make sure you get ones that don’t need too much flow.
