Pros: Good spray bar, adjustable output direction, gentle flow, perfect size for nano tanks, plenty of room to put your own choice of media, good price, comes apart easy for cleaning.

Cons: Makes water changes a huge pain. After a water change, you have to take it apart and reassemble it inside the tank to get all the air bubbles out. If you don’t the motor will grind and vibrate, making tons of noise and probably reducing its lifespan. If/when you reassemble it under water, it spills debris back out into the water. It cleans it up fast but of course it’s an added step that you must deal with.

Overall it’s just ok and I’m getting tired of putting it together underwater to make it stay quiet. I wouldn’t buy this again and after 2 months I’m already looking to replace it.

The filter was noisy on first 2-3 days but over the period of time, it calmed down. Now, it’s operation is absolutely seamless. It does well on small tanks like a 15 gallon tank with a fish or two. It’s best for fish which don’t like strong current and can withstand extreme conditions yet would require some sort of filtration like Beta and Gauramis. You can also use for your fry or shrimp tanks.

La publicidad lo vende para nano acuarios y gambarios, pero es un filtro gigante de tamaño, claramente para acuarios mucho más grandes.

The media could not be loaded.

The box did not come with an impeller cover and I did not notice until after using this product for a month. After the first cleaning (a month in because the tiny holes on the end of the filter get clogged fast) the filter now aggressively makes this noise and refuses to suck up water, and it looks like the impeller is trying to jump out of the casing.

I purchased this filter for a 5 Gal tank with the intent of customizing it. I removed the large black bio-sponge and replaced it with seachem matrix. I placed the small bio sponge on top of the matrix (“downstream” as it were) to catch any bacteria that may slough off. This keeps the impeller clean longer. I also keep red cherry shrimp. In order to make this filter shrimp-safe, I cut an aquaclear sponge very thin and stuffed behind the intake. This has the added bonus of removing large particulates.

The filter has kept my water parameters well, and the flow is adjustable. That said, this filter produces a good amount of flow for my fluval chi tank, but not too much to impede my fish. In fact, my guppies love to play in the current right in front of the outflow.

Now, this filter is not a 5-star product. It is great for what it is and what it can do. But it has a few minor flaws. The first flaw is in the construction itself. The media chamber attaches to the pump by slipping over it. But the connection is not totally sound; it can be finicky at times. If not totally submerged, air leaks into the filter through the gap and can cause noise. The second flaw (and one that almost made me return the filter) involves air bubbles. This filter needs to be completely submerged, or else it makes tons of grinding noise. I discovered the source to be air bubbles inside the filter. I carefully got all the bubbles out, and the filter worked perfectly! This can be a complication if you’re doing large water changes that will emerse the filter. Every time that happens, you would have to spend a few extra minutes working out all the air bubbles, which can be a pain. I simply set the filter low enough that it will only be emmersed with a giant water change, and haven’t had problems since!

Perfect filter for my 10 gal. betta tank. The external hang on filter that came with the tank kit (Aqueon) created too much turbulence even with a homemade baffle. It was obvious that I needed a filter with flow control. The Fluval was easy to set up, and the adjustable flow control means that I can get it to the place where there is barely any noticeable current. It did take about a half hour of tinkering with the rate of flow and the direction of the spray before I was satisfied. In the process the two halves of the filter separated, which necessitated my pulling the filter out of the tank and putting it back together. I consider this part of the learning curve of working with this nano filter. In the end, I worked out a satisfactory arrangement, and I got to practice taking apart and reassembling the filter, which is something one has to do anyway at some point. The fish seems so much more relaxed now. I read reviews in which people complained about the noise. Yes, there is some motor noise when the flow is at its most restricted, which is where I have mine. However, the disturbance is hardly noticeable, especially compared with the filters on my two other tanks. I find the Fluval a remarkable piece of engineering, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a small tank.

Anyone who keeps betta knows that it’s a struggle to find a suitable filter. Sponge filters were not cutting it because the water was getting stagnant and algea growth. HOB filters were too powerful, even on the lowest settings. Most internal filters are noisy and have an alarming amount of suction, or the fish gets stuck behind them (betta are big fans of wedging themselves behind anything they can). This filter doesn’t have any of those issues. The flow is perfect and provides a nice little shower that keeps the water circulating without being too powerful. The fish cannot get sucked into the internal intake or wedge itself behind it. The filter also is not overly noisy either – much quieter than my HOBs anyway. Provides a peaceful waterfall-esque sound. This filter is probably too large for a tank less than 5 gallons but perfect for 5-10 gallons.
