It sort of surprises me that humans haven’t adopted these for all chairs yet. Not only is it comfortable, but it really encourages movement and fires new patterns for activity because it’s almost impossible to sit on it in the same mundane and uncomfortable ways that we generally do with chairs. Even when I’m not devoting time exclusively toward exercise, I’m moving around with it all the time. What I enjoy most about the balance ball is that it blurs the lines between exercise and sitting and is therefore more motivating and encouraging to move.

When I start feeling the usual aches I’ve become used to, I notice that I start moving around to correct it with this instead of sitting on my feet or propping my legs up like I used to. Sometimes I’ll just lay completely horizontal on it for a little while until my back feels better, and it’s great. In addition, when I am exercising, I’ve been able to naturally and intuitively target portions of my abs that before felt a lot more cumbersome because of the hard floor factor.

The reason I like the Gaiam one in particular is because it’s a lot sturdier than some that I’ve used. The material is really thick, and the pump works quite well despite the feeling I got when I first started pumping. There are 3 little white stakes included to seal the air pocket.

You’ll get a heavy chemical-laden smell out of the box that will go away in a few days. That’s with any of these. To expedite it, it’s important to soak it with soap and hand wash it before you inflate it. These things are made in plastic factories, not in daisy fields. I’ve sent things back before (like weights) that were unbearably harmful and smelly, but this is reasonable and worth the quality trade-off.

Overall, I think this ball is going to last, and like I said, it’s great for exercise, posture, movement, and sitting. I don’t miss the so-called “back support” of a chair now that I’ve been using this. It never existed!

Some pros and cons to this piece of equipment:
Pro: Great price – one of the lower ones I found.
Pro: I also like that it came with some workouts even at such a low price.
Pro: Now that it’s inflated, I like it and have had no issues. It’s cute and does what it’s supposed to do.
Con: Really tough to inflate using what comes in the box. As far as the sizing issue, while I can’t speak for everyone, I thought I had this same issue and then realized that I had not fully inflated it. I used the pump that came with it since I do not have the air compressor or bike pump that the company suggests using for the first time you inflate the ball. I inflated it to what I thought was full (it truly did look full). My other half measured it because it looked teensy tiny and it was at least 20 cm too small. So we did what the instructions said and made a mark on the wall at 55 cm and just kept inflating until it reached that point. Lo and behold, it continued to further inflate to the size it was supposed to be even after it already looked full. It took a tremendous amount of effort though and was quite an arm workout.
Con: The pump it comes with is pretty darn bad. In fact, it is 100% identical to the one that came with a kids bouncy toy we have (seriously identical – there must be only one manufacturer of those things!). Definitely use the air compressor or bike pump if you have one.

I ordered these to give to my friends as a thank you gift after my birthday dinner. Both complain of back pain so I thought this would be the perfect gift for them to do stretches and keep their core working, even just by sitting and balancing on the ball it takes some work. Now one of them, uses hers as a desk chair.

This is my new desk chair and I love it. Use it all the time.

If you are using this as your desk chair: BUY THE BIG 75CM ONE! I read about the sizing, and since I am just over 5′ tall, I bought a smaller ball. I think it would have been a good size to use while working out, but it was way too short for my desk. So buy a 75cm one if you are using it as a desk chair.

Due to my job, I’m on the computer all the time and I was having a lot of back and neck pain. Using this ball as a chair has helped me eliminate most of that pain. It keeps me more aware of my seated posture, and I since it moves around I am not straining the same little muscles for hours straight. I highly suggest it if you have a desk job and have back pain.

The ball is made from high quality plastic or rubber (whatever it is). It is very well made.

When I first got it, I did have to re-inflate it a few times, probably because it was being stretched out for the first time. Now it rarely needs any reinflating, and if it does it’s just a few pumps.

The hand-pump included works just fine too. It’s sturdy and made with hard plastic.

I haven’t tried the workout CD it came with, since I mostly just use it for sitting on, so that did not factor into my review.
