For me, the strings are sensitive. Just what I need. I like the tone, but it is very important to keep them clean to keep that tone. I wipe them vigorously after I practice everyday, of course, but in addition, I clean them with alcohol about once a week (protecting the varnish of course). For me this maximizes their tone. Cost was good and they stabilized quickly. I am still looking for that “perfect” string set. Most likely the sound I’m looking for will have to come from my own technique. Therefore, it seemed only fair to rate these a five star.

Wow, what a difference they made to the tone of my fiddle. Love them. Thanks to Patti Kusturok for recommending them to me.

My fiddle came with fancy orchestra strings, which I replaced with very basic steel strings. They were ok, but I could never get any sound out of them without bearing down with the bow.

The Prim strings solve that. They are steel, so they work well for Old Time fiddling — they stay in tune well and handle outdoor conditions without changing. They sound great when playing drones and double stops, and put out a lot of sound on OT songs, but they also play well with a light touch on the bow for some of the more delicate reels.

These strings are great for getting a specific sound out of a specific kind of fiddle. I have an extremely dark instrument, and I think Prims give it an edge and a sparkle it can otherwise lack—I think they bring it to life. On the other hand, they can sound incredibly harsh on brighter instruments. They aren’t versatile in terms of tone. They’re quick to respond and very durable, though. I give them four stars only because I find the E string harsh, overly loud and whistle-prone, so I have to buy the Prim Lisa E separately. I got a defective G string with my last set, as did one other reviewer here, but I ordered a replacement set and there doesn’t appear to be an issue—nor have I had one before.

It was easy to tell these strings were old . I installed them and they sounded terrible.. I took them off and tossed them in the trash.

These are wonderfully smooth sounding and beautifully responsive strings. Don’t hesitate when you see the price. You are buying quality With every cent you spend. When you are ready to upgrade strings for half the price of some brands Prim will not disappoint.

I think the tone and equal measure of volume these strings bring to the table is very nice. They seem a bit nicer and more stable than my normal beginner Helicores and preludes.

These are the preferred brand of strings that we use on all of our fiddles. We play old time, bluegrass, and country music and these strings do great. They seem to last, and have a nice pleasing tone. They allow the sound and character of the instrument to stand out. We’ve tried other brands, but we were never quite satisfied. I would highly recommend these strings to anyone that plays violin. The price is right, and I would definitely come back for more. Happy customer!

I’m torn… The sound of the strings is really lovely: even and velvety, not squeaky or scratchy or too bright. I have a very bright sounding violin, so I was looking for strings that won’t add to the brightness but rather tone it down and these were perfect for that. HOWEVER, while installing them, the G-string unraveled and pulled as soon as any tension was put on it. Didn’t completely snap but unraveled, stretched and coiling came undone: you could see the bare steel core and loose outer coils. Anyway, I’m assuming this G was just defective… This is before I ever even started tightening to tune it to its full stretch. This happened while I was winding the peg and tension just got put on the string very lightly. Very disappointed and am returning. Will give them another try.
