When you are shelling out $2000+ do yourself a favor and try out the Epiphone Custom Pro.
I was surprised that hooked up to a VOX- they sounded almost the same. Slight edge to Gibson- not worth $3000+ for that slight edge. The tone comes from you.
The pickups on the Epiphone are made by Gibson and were right there- waxed and clean. Try it before you put some serious $$$ into this Gibson. I had the money to spend past this level if I wanted it- walk out with it. I didn’t choose this model- it was a hair sweeter sounding- not enough to warrant $3000+. Call it a fluke model from Epiphone, but the Custom Pro beat out most of the Gibsons I played. I wouldn’t have believed it until I tried it – things were aligned just right on it. If you ever have picked up a guitar after playing a large variety and said- ” this is the one” Brother- try that one model from Epiphone. I actually went in to buy a Gibson- and instead left with a Epiphone – that might sound like blasphemy from some- it is what it is. Try that model- you might be surprised like I was. Past a certain point- the tone comes from you no matter how much you spend. I only posted this because it shocked me and the pickups, body and neck were great. I would have paid $2000+ for that guitar- they sell them for $600. It was a no brainer on feel, tone, alignment- intonation. It wasn’t about the name- it was about what it sounded like and how it played. Before you go tossing $4000 down- try the Epiphone Custom Pro model- it might shock you too. I walked in thinking those were chicom garbage look alikes- I had to eat my words. Maybe it was a fluke- the planets aligned or something- but it is one of things that ” just is”. Plays and sounds like a dream. Tone- mounds- highs- clear- lows- clear and chunky defined without bleeding or muddy. Great Rock- Izzy G&R tone. I can pick it up and just let the sound from the speakers reverberate through the body and tons of sustain and tone. You could offer me an even swap for the Gibson- I wouldn’t do it- the Epiphone feels better. I went in several days expecting to walk out with a Gibson – it was an eye opener. Every once in a while a guitar is just put together right from the factory- all of us that have played for a good while know what I am talking about- you go through over 20+ guitars over a couple of days and out of all them- one just “feels” right for some reason in tone- neck- alignment. And when you find that- you don’t walk away from it. Money wasn’t an issue.

I received this guitar with paint problems (scratches and some parts, specially close to the neck, was blur and slipped).
The entire neck had problems with the binding and paint match.
Also the binding on the back and top had some parts where you could feel a level change between them.
A bit of weight difference with a match guitar of the same line, unbalanced body-neck.
Small parts weren’t polished and pickguard still had a few shavings. Nothing that a nice & calm setup, tuneup and cleanup won’t fix.
Sound was great, no doubt about it. With the perfect tube amp you’ll get the best out of the humbuckers and exquisite wood (hurry up before baked maple takes over the world!).
Still, I will return this item… there is no excuse for such an expensive guitar to have ANY imperfections.

I got this for a Xmas present and I was in complete shock! I’ve played for 30+ years and owned several Gibson Les Pauls in the 70’s and 80’s. I currently own over 30 guitars and play out professionally. This guitar has NO standard, I hate to say it but the Chinese Epiphones have much more. OK, lets start with the finish work. Where the neck connects to the body had ZERO sanding etc. and was just painted over! The finish and the hardware are just horrid! Out of 100’s of guitars I’ve owned, the set up was the worst ever!! I just paid $700 for a Epiphone PRO 100th Anniversary and it kills the USA one! It even had a very close set up and much more care all the way around! The neck and action was so straight and low, like for a teenage metal head?! (I guess these can be fixed .. but why should I paid 3K and have too?) Lastly, they don’t even put real mother of pearl after 2014 and give you Richlite! A $3,000+ guitar w Richlite!! I have never understood why the very reasons that made the Les Paul a killer guitar have all been taken away! The weight was a big part of the tone, (that’s why we got a “Les Paul Studio” because it is the reduced Les Paul weight?! …) This guitar has become a 2nd rate guitar with a first rate price tag! I wonder how long a legacy can continue for these over priced USA Gibson’s. While Strats (I just bought a Lone Star Start made in Mexico and it KILLS!! It may of been made in Mexico but it speaks English!) seemed to INCREASED their quality!
