I have looked for a clarinet for my daughter who just started band. This one has a great sound and is lighter than a good number of others. Definitely worth the price, which is not bad for a good quality. My daughter said it was easier to play and hit the notes. So far we are very happy with it.

Had the clarinet for 2 days while writing this review. I was skeptical about buying an instrument online, but bought this clarinet anyway despite it not having any reviews. The instrument seems to be well made. The inside of the barrel is made of plastic, the outer finish might be wood. Had my child’s music teacher look at it and he agreed with me about material it’s made of. Even though the inner barrel is plastic, the sound that it makes seems rich. Wanted an instrument made of all wood, but one can’t expect to get that for under $200. Both teacher and child seem to be happy with it so far. The clarinet came in a case with a little bit of cork grease, a cleaning cloth, a mini flat head screw driver and 1 reed.

My private teacher tried my clarinet and said that it was actually an excellent instrument for the money. The sound is very warm and extremely easy to get over the break. It’s well built, and you feel this as soon as you hold the instrument. Highly recommended.

I like that this kit is very comprehensive. You have everything you need to get started for day one. I’d recommend also buying an additional box of reeds, probably two or three strength.

As for the instrument itself, it fits together nicely and all the keys work smoothly. It can be tough for parents when deciding on entry-level instruments. I think that the important thing to remember is that professional grade instruments can be very very very expensive. You have to start somewhere, and the student quality level usually makes the most sense.

So now, to comment on quality, the construction seems adequate for the early student level maybe 6th to 8th grade. if your student excels, then they will need something more down the line but even if it only lasts two years, it will have paid for itself by then.

As a sidenote, for any parent of a new music learner: pad, cork, and key, repairs are pretty common, but usually not very expensive.

when i ordered this clarinet, i thought it was advertised as beginner-friendly. at the time i’m writing this review, it is advertised as a “student” clarinet but “intermediate” is the level used to describe its use. i am reviewing as a beginner. i have previously played piano, ukulele, guitar, and french horn, but never a woodwind instrument. so my review should be considered in that light.

that being said, the instrument seems satisfactory, but a few touches may have made it more beginner-friendly, or just a slightly more competitive product.

first of all, the reed comes pre-installed on the mouthpiece and secured via the ligature. there is no case for the reed, nor are there any spare reeds. i think a reed case would have been a great feature, and as a beginner, it would have also been convenient to have at least one spare reed. as this is advertised for intermediate use, it is possible it is assumed that the student will already have these on hand.

second of all, the cork grease is really not my favorite. it comes in a tub instead of a balm (which is what i’ve seen before), and there is no application tool included (to my knowledge) to apply the grease. so you will be using your fingers, which is a little messy. even with washing and/or wiping my hands after using the cork grease, i feel like its residue persists and may lead to some wear on the clarinet exterior. i personally would have liked trying the balm, but this may be a “personal preference” thing and not an issue for most. HOWEVER, you DEFINITELY need to use cork grease to assemble this clarinet safely. if you are like me and a complete clarinet beginner, make sure you have identified the cork grease and know to use it during assembly before you put yours together. i did not damage mine in assembly when i put a few pieces together without it, but it will be significantly easier to assemble with the cork grease, and will be gentler on the instrument as well.

third, the material does feel a little “beginner”/”student” oriented. this is a pro and con for me, as i wanted something durable, but also i didn’t want to splurge on high-grade instruments as i’m just starting out. this instrument does seem to be one that will carry me through early lessons, but it also feels designed to be replaced in favor of a more professional model if you end up sticking with the instrument and wanting to advance.

i have seen other types of cleaning cloths before, some of which seem to be shaped for the interior of the clarinet for easy cleaning. this isn’t a feature i feel as comfortable commenting on, since i know little about it. however, this item’s cleaning cloth was a true cloth, so maybe that information is useful to someone a little more familiar with clarinets.

as for how it plays, it played nicely. it took me around (maybe slightly less than) an hour to watch some online tutorials for assembly, posture, positioning, and embouchure before i was able to produce a sound. i know clarinet is a pretty ambitious choice for self-taught instruments, but this product does seem student-friendly.

i’m glad the product listing includes what key the clarinet is, as this is useful for beginners to know. i wish the product had maybe come with an insert on parts/assembly/hand placement, but i think it would be more reasonable to expect that from a product advertised for beginners.

all-in-all, i think this clarinet is a nice product. i would probably recommend it to someone else who is just starting out, but i couldn’t say whether this is a nice upgrade for intermediates or if it should be classed as a beginner product.

My teenage daughter has been playing clarinet for 3+ years, in concert band and marching band. She has a Buffet Crampon for concert band and we thought we’d try this GKW clarinet to use for marching, since that takes a bit of a toll on instruments.

In her opinion, this is a decent clarinet for beginners, with better construction than the $100-ish plastic clarinets from no-name brands. This one is also plastic but it seems to be a higher grade composition. The reed that was included with the instrument is crap – possibly too hard? She said it was a poorly carved piece of wood and immediately swapped it for one of her D’Addario reeds (her teacher also recommends Vandoren). My daughter agrees that it is easy to get over the break. But, she doesn’t like some of the keys and says the middle A key is too far away. The side E flat hits the bridge key and feels weird. The thumb rest is nice and comfortable. She feels that the sound in the upper registers is better qualtiy than the lower end which tends to sound a little buzzy compared to a Yamaha YCL-255 that she has used.

At the end of the day, both my daughter and her teacher prefer the sound and playability of the Yamaha YCL-255 for marching band. If you are buying this for a 6th grader or elementary school student who is just starting out and don’t want to spend a lot of cash, this is probably a better choice than those $100 clarinets. But if you think your child might have a serious interest, I’d recommend renting a Yamaha YCL-255 or purchasing a used one – they are typically in the $600-$800 range.
