UPDATE: Tried the Android app again today & blue-tooth connection is working fine…do not know why…perhaps there was a problem with my phone update which has now been patched?…anyway rating now at 5 star as originally intended.

Had this for a day or so and the app & blue-tooth connection worked fine with my Android 10 phone (Huawei Mate 20x EMUI 11)…app says it needs Android 4 or above and was all set for a 5 star review. However, my phone recently updated to Android 11 (EMUI 12) and it no longer connects…uninstalled the app…reset everything, re-installed a few times but still not working…app needs updating otherwise I will have to return it soon :o((

At first I could not get the pulse ox to work but I found out that I had put the batteries in wrong. You have to look closely at the symbols on the device, because their placement is not intuitive.

The pulse ox seems to be accurate and is easy to use. I had no trouble getting the app to work with my iphone. It’s called “oximeterstore” in the app store and has a green icon.

I was hoping to use it to track my levels through the night to sync up with the data from my cpap machine. The device is a bit tight to wear all night on your finger, I used some tape around the top to fasten it in a little bit open position to take some pressure off my finger, and it still worked fine. You can set it to play an alarm if numbers go out of range that you can define. The app on the phone goes dark to save battery but is still running. The oximeter brightness can be turned down by holding down the button on it and it cycles through the brightness levels.

The data it exports is only a rather primitive graph in pdf format. I had to save the pdf to icloud and then download to my computer. The first screenshot is an example of the file it outputs in pdf format. I could not find a way to get more detail or put it in landscape mode for the pdf, so it gives you only a rough approximation of the night. I’m not even sure how to read it because at places there seem to be dots above and below the line in the same place. However, in the app on the phone screen, although you can’t put it in landscape mode, you can zoom in to stretch the graph out to get more detail, as shown in the second screenshot. I wish I could move that file to my computer!

For the price, it’s a very useful device, though.

Most oximeters that support data recording generally cost $100-$150, so it is great that something on the market can support this capability at this price point. Despite being less than $10, the reading is consistent with my other oximeters and can read pulse rate, SpO2, and perfusion index (how strong your pulse is).

The app is relatively basic but works fine. I like the fact that it does not require any registration and that it can work completely offline. While it does not have comprehensive sleep analysis functionality like other sleep monitors, it is easy to export the data to Excel where you can analyze it with a script or with Excel itself.

After using it for a few nights, here’s my overall thoughts on this:
    1. Do not use the batteries provided in the box if you will record data overnight. The “super heavy duty” batteries are very low in capacity and will only last approximately 6 hours before the device shuts down.

    2. If you use the included batteries, make sure you immediately check the battery compartment when the device shuts off. This is because the batteries have a very high tendency to leak once they are depleted. If the battery acid is not cleaned off the metal plates promptly, the battery acid will corrode the battery terminals.

    3. If you are going to be using this overnight to record data frequently, it is recommended that you use rechargeable NiMH batteries since they do not leak even when completely depleted. It also saves you the hassle of buying new batteries every other session.

    4. Do not use dollar-store super heavy-duty/carbon zinc batteries. These are low-quality batteries and will not last a complete night cycle in the device. Alkaline batteries usually last about 3 nights and rechargeables around 2 (depending on the brand and size). The device shuts off with a low voltage warning at 1.2v, which is also the same cutoff voltage for NiMH batteries, although the battery indicator will show half bars for fully charged NiMH batteries (which isn’t a problem because that indicator will pretty much remain the same the whole night).

    5. For a 7-hour session, it took around 420mAh of power to recharge the AAA NiMHs fully (it is considered a high-drain device if you plan on using this device overnight frequently).

    6. While the app receives data from the device almost in real-time, the data points exported to Excel are in 30-second intervals. This is a good interval to look for symptoms of OSA without too much background noise (when tossing and turning, for example).

    7. On my Pixel 7 Pro running Android 14, I had no issues with the app running in the background with the screen off the whole night. The app did not suddenly terminate nor did I have to switch the battery optimization settings for the app (it is still on the default, “Optimized”). Other manufacturers that have more aggressive termination behavior may be different, however.

    8. Both the app and the device itself have alarm settings and they are separate. To access the device settings, press and hold the power button and the settings menu will appear. You can also change the device brightness in the same menu. To scroll through the item list, tap the power button. To change the setting, press and hold the power button until the value changes. You probably may want to turn the alarm settings off and set the screen brightness to 1 so it does not disturb your sleep (unfortunately there is no way to turn off the screen while recording).

    9. There is some moderate discomfort when having this clipped to your finger for 7-8 hours. To mitigate this, you can either change fingers in the middle of the night, or use a sturdy piece of tape to keep the oximeter clamp slightly open so it reduces the pressure on your fingers. With the default configuration, I have not experienced the device falling off my fingers in the middle of the night, even when the constant toss and turning that I do. Even without keeping the clamp open, the discomfort is just temporary and the sensation usually disappears shortly after you release the finger from the clamp.

Works great and will record data while you sleep with the app running. However it only seems to record a couple of hours which is fine for me. The battery last only a couple of days. Great value for less than $15.

I’m so glad to have this on hand just to double-check, because I have COPD. It was a very good deal and does a great job.

If you or someone you know is more and more health-conscious they may start to travel with similar Health monitoring tools like this., my father, as he has aged has become more noticeable of his health and always needs these sort of knick knacks for traveling. The monitor is simple to use as it just Clips onto your finger and with a set of buttons pushed you can get your heart rate displayed fast and effectively. Usually he has the standard blood pressure monitors with the cuffs, but those can be bulky and just need so much more time to read your stats out to you. With this, he can keep this in his pocket, over his neck with the included lanyard and even use the Bluetooth app which connects to the device to keep a record of his readouts for a future use, which we can then Supply to his doctor when asking for his most recent reading. I like that it takes very little technical knowledge to use this and maybe even less time to get it set up. Or anyone who has a parent or just wants to keep track of their health as well in terms of heart rate, I’d say that this is a great option for something portable yet effective.
