JONONMAS Lawn Aerator Spike Manual Tool

When I saw this aerator on Amazon, I was surprised. I live in upstate New York, just below Lake George. The last glacier that came through here did homeowners in the area no favors, because upon melting, it dropped all of the sand it was carrying right here. The resulting landscape is made up of porous soil that can’t keep sprinkler water on the lawn for any appreciable time.
It just gets sucked down into the biggest sand trap outside of the Gobi.
And, another added benefit to this sandy soil is the fact that it becomes hard as a rock if you do not constantly keep it wet.
And that costs money.
Getting back to my surprise, this Jononmas Spiked aerator tool is something I always wanted, but as far as I could tell, didn’t exist. In the past, I’ve gone so far as to fabricate my own homegrown aerator, which consisted of a bunch of spikes hammered through an old 2×4, As you can imagine, that had serious limitations. It’s hard to find the sort of long nails or fat spikes that could make my DIY’er aerator effective, and wooden 2×4’s just fall apart under heavy use. Further, you just can’t put 15 spikes through a 2×4 without making it so long that you need to step on the top of it several times to get it to work. As far as putting a handle on this thing, a sort rope attached to each end was all I could come up with. The nails bend, get dull, and fall out. Doing this sort of chore with a dodgy homemade aerator is not as much fun as it sounds. So, I decided to look for professional help.
I went out to the big box and looked around for manual lawn aerators. The best product they had on the shelf was a 4-pronged, short tool whose use was a time-consuming chore on par with my contraption. It made 4 quarter sized holes in the soil just fine, but you needed to plunge it into the soil many, many times to cover a given area. That became very tiring after a short time, and it left the lawn pretty torn up. Not good.
So, yeah, when I saw this, I jumped at it. This aerator suits my needs perfectly. It is ideal for loosening the soil in those parts of the lawn that are on the verge of turning into concrete. You can do a relatively large area quickly and efficiently. It is a well-made garden tool with 15 spikes that are all business. It has a large footprint, and you can easily pierce the hard soil without much effort. Just step on the footpad, and the sharp spikes slide easily into the ground. It is easy to assemble–I didn’t have to ask my daughter to do it–and it comes with the clever tools you need to assemble it. For smaller jobs, you can even remove as many spikes as you like to fit your needs. The 15 spikes you plunge into the ground make the soil an excellent candidate for reseeding.
This is a quality product, and serious gardeners will love it.

The tool is incredibly sturdy and well-made, and the metal spikes penetrate the soil effortlessly. Using it has made a noticeable difference in the health and appearance of my lawn. The aeration process allows water, nutrients, and air to reach the roots more effectively, resulting in a lusher and greener lawn.

What I appreciate most is how easy it is to use. The design is ergonomic, making it comfortable to handle, even for extended periods. It’s also very efficient; I can cover a significant area in a short amount of time. This tool is now an essential part of my yard care routine, helping to loosen compacted soil and promote healthier grass growth.

The build quality on this once together is superb, and the options to have a single line of spikes or multiple is really nice. This will make short work of a small lawn like mine, but as with any manual tool, may struggle with rocky soil. The spikes are pretty robust and hold up well, though.

Overall, after getting everything tightened down (which took a few minutes), I was very pleased with how this came out. It is comfortable and east to use. Works well! I am 6’2 and had no issues either the length.

Took me about 25 minutes to put it together–it’s not hard, and the 2 required tools are included, but there are 19 nuts and bolts to insert and tighten. Anyway, when it’s together it’s moderately solid; I wouldn’t say heavy-duty, but I wouldn’t expect it to fall apart any time soon either. Unlike some manual aerators, this one provides thin solid spikes instead of thicker hollow tubes. That means you end up with much smaller holes–as you can see from the photo, they’re pretty tiny. The good news is that you get 15 holes at once–but the bad news that comes with that good news is that you have to push down pretty hard to get the spikes to sink in more than halfway. Also, the design makes it a little tricky to get your food on the top of spike platform to give it the force it needs to sink in–and it’s basically impossible to stand on it with both feet.

I don’t know enough to say whether these tiny holes are enough to give you real aeration, my guess is they’re pretty marginal. But hopefully having lots of them will make up for it. Overall, I think this tool isn’t a bad way to get the job done, but it’s not quite as good as some of the better manual aerators.
