I love this filter. I have two 10L filters and this one is more designed as an emergency water filter. The size and capacity is perfect for keeping with my first aid gear. If you have never used a Katadyn filter you’re missing out. They are fast and they work!

Excellent filter. Used it on a 3 day canoe trip. Worked perfectly.

The BeFree filter was recommended by a friend. I was a bit dubious based on its weight. I’m a long-time Katadyn Hiker Pro user and was interested in a lighter alternative. I decided to use it on a 7 day backpack in the Grand Canyon where the water sources would be relatively clear feeder streams to the Colorado River – which is heavily sedimented and presents special challenges to *any* filter. The BeFree worked well and it survived (as expected) its days in the Canyon.
The good news:
> it’s light and folds easily into a small space in your pack;
> it’s easy to use – just dunk the 1L flexible plastic sack into the water source;
> it seems easy to clean – just swish in the water source (I did not have to clean the filter as the water sources were relatively clear of sediment & ‘gunk’);
> replacement cartridges are less expensive than the Hiker Pro cartridges (but I’m not sure how long the BeFree filter will last vs the Hiker Pro’s)
The not so good news:
> the flexible plastic sack had a pinhole leak on its first use (apparently not uncommon) but did not affect performance;
> since you submerge the plastic sack into the water source, shallow sources could slow the filling of the sack or preclude water collection entirely;
> since you collect 1L at a time and then transfer it to a lager ‘clean water’ container (I use 2L Platypus plastic containers), it’s a slower process with more actions than with the Hiker Pro.
None of the ‘not so good’ items were deal-breakers and I would have given the BeFree 1L 5-stars had there not been a pin-hole leak. I’m not sending it back, it’s an easy repair.
This is a great piece of gear to add to my collection and to lighten my backpack for those longer adventures.

Bottle and bag feel sturdy and not easily gonna leak. Threads are smooth, easy operation. Plastic drinking cap at top is easy to use with good quality control. Will buy again. Cleaning filter is simple and intuitive.

I have used the filter a couple of times now. Very happy, it has made the water very drinkable. I try to use clean stream (spring) water, so not too many impurities. Easy to use. Fill & squeeze.

Very light. After two seasons of backpacking, still seems dependable. I carry two on extended hikes, just to be safe, which is still lighter and smaller than my old filter. Good flow rate. Wide mouth bottle is easy to fill.

I’m a 25-year backpacker and I’ve always used bleach to treat my water. I’ve tried nearly every other method available for water treatment and for me, bleach is just so simple and available. However, I’m getting into Fastpacking and I don’t want to wait the required 30-minutes for the bleach to kill everything so after a lot research, I landed on the BeFree. I’ve only used it on one backpacking trip and I loved it! It’s so simple, lightweight, and fast flowing that I’ll likely carry it on every hike from now on. It’s easy to fill in a small trickling run-off and the flow rate is fantastic. I was able to easily and quickly fill my other bottles when stocking up. I’m excited to continue using the BeFree and when water is plenty along the trail, I can carry less in my backpack because as soon as I refill, I can drink instantly. So far, I highly recommend this filter and 1L soft flask system.

We used these on a recent RV trip. We filtered the water from the area we were in just to be safe. The bag is small enough to stick in your day pack and take with you everywhere. I also used it to filter water into my yeti. I would squeeze a bag full into my yeti and stick that in my pack for immediate use and then filled the bag again for later. Love it.
As a side note we did not filter any truly dirty water so I can’t speak to that. I can say the water from our RV tanks (which can harbor viruses) and other sources like that were filtered and we were fine the whole trip.
Water flow was great and there was no odd taste to the water like some filters leave.
